A junior defenseman, Kyle served as a captain on the Rockport team that advanced to the semi-finals in the MIAA Division 3 North Tournament this season. Rockport Head Coach Derek Papalegis says, “He is adisciplined player. That’s why we put the ‘A’ on his jersey. He’s not a vocal leader but he leads by example. The way he plays is the right way, he always gives 110% and he does the little things. He makes smart passes, he will give up his body to make a play. You don’t necessarily have to be vocal to be an on ice leader, he does it by doing the right things.”

A Gloucester Random Act Of Kindness- Jamie the Animal Control Officer

Jeffrey B French writes-

Hi Joey, i enjoy your blog, especially the photos, we live in such a beautiful place. You show me places I have not seen yet after living here 47 years. Last week, in broad daylight, someone tied a 9 year old Husky to the front stairs of my office, the Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital on Essex Ave, and took off. The person left an envelope tied to his collar containing $20 and a note saying they could no longer take care of "King". I called Jamie the Animal Control Officer, who came right away, and has been caring for the dog, walking him and spending time getting him to trust people again. He also comes on his day off. I know some people may think being an Animal Control Officer is kind of a heartless job, but I wanted you to know that the one we have in Gloucester is a special kind of person, and has gone out of his way to try to turn a bad situation into something good. As far as I know, "King" will be available for adoption at the end of a ten day confinement period.

Jeffrey B French, D.V.M.

Props to my peeps!

Just looking over the blog I’d like to offer up thanks to our contributors who photograph and write for GMG on a daily basis.

Every single day we are pumping out 15-20 quality posts about this place we love and when I got to thinking about it I’m not sure I’ve seen another daily that produces that kind of content daily when doing it solely for the purpose of the love of it without getting paid.

Hell I’m not even sure there are many small hyper local publications that get paid that produce that much quality content.

So props to our contributors and props to the people who leave encouraging comments for them, letting them know that their work is appreciated!

Very proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

(this doesn’t mean we’re going to stop pushing the boundaries and getting better)

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS – “GOOD EGGS EXTRAORDINAIRE’

image

The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is planning another “Night of Recognition” to honor those who give generously to make Gloucester a better place. Nominations are now being received of men and women who have worked quietly and diligently, on their own or within an organization, often behind the scenes and with no expectation of pay or public notice. These are people who have by their actions have improved the quality of life in their neighborhood or anywhere in Gloucester .  Teenage to old age, there are no age restrictions.

Some examples – an individual who:

You probably know someone who deserves this recognition. Tell us about her or him.

Random Acts of Kindness- Giuseppe’s

Joey,

I wanted to share a story of kindness I was lucky enough to witness today. Some friends were planning a birthday dinner party on Sunday for their 6-year-old-to-be at Giuseppe’s restaurant on Main Street. Forty-four people had reserved weeks in advance but the big event got called off a couple hours before due to a sudden illness in the family.

I don’t know anything about running a restaurant but I’d be pretty upset to lose a tab of 44 people for dinner and drinks. Instead, Giuseppe’s co-owner Memory Layne heard about the illness and sent dinner on the house to the little boy, his family and their friends. Someone tried to pay her for it but Memory wouldn’t take a dime, instead asking how the sick family member was doing and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Little moments of kindness like this make life sweeter. They’re not all that surprising in Gloucester, a place where people look out for each other more than any other place I’ve ever known. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop and point them out once in a while.

Memory Layne and people like her are part of what we all love about this place.

2012 St Josph’s Novena Trolley

Special thanks to all of the beautiful families who welcomed us into their homes, Sefathia for organizing the Trolley, Bob Ryan from CATA and Eddie Salah who donated his time to drive the Novena Trolley and our trolley mates who did the 2012 Novena crawl.

The work put in by these families is truly astounding and we are all honored by the welcoming by each and every house and huge props go out to the women, men and children that keep this tradition alive.  You are what makes our community special.

Kim Smith will do her usual knock out job covering the entire thing in a much more refined manner than my stuff but it will take a bit for her to chew through all the footage.

In the mean time, I’ll be doing a separate post each day from each family, some had more coverage than other from me as while The Bean and Snoop Maddie Mad were still with us I wanted to spend that time with them.

First off, the Trolley-
