Friends Of Seacoast From Tommy Lattof

I am excited to share with you a new list of Friends of Seacoast members and the outpouring support from leadership at Northeast Health Systems (NHS) as well as my visit to Seacoast today. Please click on the attachment and print our membership for your files.

I visited Seacoast to thank Millie Gentile a long time family friend for having memorial gifts sent to us in memory of her husband Rosario who passed away last week.  She indicated she was going down to the dining room and wanted me to join her for coffee, which I did. I learned from Alison Cox earlier that they were taking 12 residents for lunch to the Gloucester House Restaurant in a van with a nurse assigned for their safety and that others will be offered on, a rotating basis, this opportunity each month.  The Friends of Seacoast would donations would be used to fund this event.

As it turned out Millie Gentile and another resident who was sitting at our table having coffee were part of the 12 chosen for the month. I mentioned to her that the gifts received in memory of her husband, Rosario, would help defray that cost which pleased her very much.

She said the staff at Seacoast was very good to the resident and she felt safe and was in a wonderful place.

Our next meeting is October 9, 2012  at 6 PM which falls on an event Alison Cox, our Activities Director, is having at 5 PM.  It is a dinner and show (entertainment or movie) for the residents. Specialty food from area restaurants is brought in that evening. Anyone interested in checking it out before our 6 PM  meeting is welcome to do so.

We will finalize our Holiday Fair scheduled for December 1, 2012. I am happy to report that Sam Santuccio has informed me that he will plan to provide the music for this event. Thanks Sam for all you do for us.

Karen Mc Cann will be the General Chairperson and handle the Wine Cellar ticket raffle.of this event and Angela and Pat Ciaramitaro will Co-Chair the cookie table so line up your friends to bake for this event. Vincent Pallazola and I will work the food table.  Alison Cox will contact the Vendors who will be displaying their goods for sale throughout the dining room

You should be proud that your contributions of time and money are being used to make Seacoast  the best facility on the North Shore.  No other facility that I know of has a group like the Friends of Seacoast assisting the Activity Director in funding events to help the residents stay connected to the community.

I am happy be part of this dedicated group and thank you for your help.

Hello Joey

I am  volunteer working on the publicity committee for this event.   I am hoping you will be interested in posting the different tables on Good Morning Gloucester.   This would be a wonderful way to get some exposure for the artists, Pathways, and our event.

Craig and Helen Whitney Have Some Nice Things To Say

My wife and I really enjoyed last night’s Nights on the Neck at the Rocky Neck Art Colony and noted to a couple of artists that, after growing up and living on the North Shore our whole lives, we have never been to Rocky Neck before. Gotta be among the North Shore’s best kept secrets! So as one artist suggested, we found and will now read GMG.

We especially enjoyed listening to the Julie Dukas Jazz Trio at the Madfish Wharf (also mojitos at the Madfish Grille). We remarked that they should have their CDs for sale, and were amazed to find online this am that they apparently don’t have any CDs. Too bad as we would love to buy them!

Great place and great program last night overall.

Corliss Family Fundraiser

A friend of mine, Wayne Corliss, has been diagnosed with a terminal form of Cancer. A bunch of friends are joining forces and (struggling) are putting on a Fundraiser for Wayne and his wife, Dianne. Can you help us spread the word?

It will be held at the Cruiseport Gloucester on Wed. the 12th of September from 7-11pm. The evening includes: Food, Music (Major Nelson and the Screamin’ Jeanies) Silent Auction, Chinese Auction, Dancing and a cash bar. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at the door or at these locations: Cape Ann Travel Services @ 978-282-8216    NorthShore Veterinary Hospital @ 978-283-0214     Putnam Veterinary Clinic @ 978-887-3836    Cape Ann Veterinary Hospital @ 978-283-3238

Monetary donations & auction items are gratefully accepted!

ALL proceeds to benefit Wayne & Dianne Corliss

I have know Wayne for over ten years…he has a very special place in my heart. We all know what the outcome for him is. It’s very upsetting for me as well as others around him. (not to mention Wayne) We are all trying to stay optimistic and are gathering to help them out financially…Wayne has been out of work for months and Dianne has taken alot of time off to care for him. There is nothing more we can do…the battle itself is his & his alone.

If you can get this information out on Goodmorning Gloucester, I think it will reach out to lots of folks who would want to pitch in, but are unaware of Waynes struggle.

You can reach me by Email or my Cell- 978-423-9819

Thanks Joey!

How can you take pictures of galaxies and comets without owning a
camera or a telescope?
Long-time GAAC member Gary Meehan has been taking photos of the night
sky using remote, robotic telescopes located out in the Sacramento
Mountains of southern New Mexico for a couple of years now. He’s
imaged comets, emission nebulae, star clusters and galaxies, using
none of his own equipment other than a computer.
At the September 14 GAAC meeting, he’ll explain the advantages of
taking this approach, and explain how you can do this too.
He’ll give a quick overview of the New Mexico facility, and show how
to go about planning an imaging session, including the need to use
different sorts of tools to monitor the remote weather conditions, and
demonstrate an imaging session. If time permits, Gary will show you
how to go about forming a final color picture from a series of images
taken through several filters.
GAAC meets at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month, at St Paul
Lutheran Church in Lanesville. We’re online at http://www.gaac.us ,

Happy Birthday Bobby Viau!!!

Hey Joey,

I called Frank the other day to say many THANKS.  We had our annual Labor Day family party at my mom’s in Scituate with the old fashion parade (awesome) and the whole deal.  I summered there as a kid.  Bob borrowed two turkey fryers from his brother and set up the whole deal to cook them up.  We had corn, chowder and your fantastic Lobsters.  Everyone was raving and begging for seconds.  Only the select few, HA got seconds.  Bob of course got seconds being he did the heavy work and is 60 TODAY!!!  The others had to settle for a hotdog. There were several folks there including Bob that can get every inch of everything a lobster has to the bare shell!   My family is big on Lobster and my brother came up to me and said it was the best lobster he’s had in 20 years.  It was a great day.  Frankie and you took good care of the family!

Best, Deej Viau

Newly Engaged FOBs Kimberly Funk & Bradley Scheetz!

Hi Joey-

My boyfriend (now fiance!) Bradley and I really enjoy your blog and we LOVE Gloucester (we definitely have the wheels turning for a relocation from Boston one day). Thought I would share a Gloucester story from this past Sunday..
We often come up on the weekends to hang out and one of the things we (mostly me) like to do is look for sea glass at Pavilion beach. That’s where we were this past Sunday when Bradley called me over to look at something in the sand. Just sitting on a rock was a beautiful shiny sparkly ring. I was a little slow..even thinking aloud that someone must have lost their ring..doh! Anyway it was for ME and we got engaged right then and there! We were super lucky that local, Amy Clayton happened to be on the beach and she snapped some pictures for us! Here our a couple of our favorites ..

BankGloucester giving away $15,000

Hi Joey,

BankGloucester will be giving away a total of $15,000 to 15 community organizations in October. The way the winners are chosen is by votes from the community itself. Voting begins on Monday, August 27th. Most of the organizations are from Gloucester, with a few from the surrounding area. This is the 5th year that BankGloucester has given back to the community in this way. Since your blog is such a part of Gloucester, I am hoping you could help put the word out for people to vote.

BankGloucester will donate a total of $15,000 to 15 community organizations on Cape Ann!

2011-BFC-Winners-640-web

Supporting organizations that are important to the residents of Cape Ann is one of the ways that BankGloucester gives back to the community. The funds will be distributed based on the number of votes received. The organization with the most votes will receive $5,000. The organization receiving the second most votes will receive $3,000. The organization with the third most votes will receive $1,000. 12 other organizations with the next highest number of votes will each receive $500.

Winners are chosen by the votes cast by community members. Beginning Monday, August 27, 2012 anyone can come into the BankGloucester for a ballot or may complete a ballot online at www.BankGloucester.com . Please one entry per person/email address. Phyllis A Association Welcomes Melissa Cox’ Husband Bill

Hey Joey!

I just wanted to share the announcement that I have recently joined the Board of Directors for the Phyllis A Marine Association. As you may know, we are a group dedicated to restoring this historic vessel whose owner helped bring gillnetting to Gloucester and we are located at the Gloucester Marine Railways, Rocky Neck. I am looking forward to helping in any way I can to get the Phyllis A back in service so that people will be able to enjoy the experience of sailing on her as well as learn more about the fishing history of our awesome city, for years to come.

I also wanted to let everyone know that this weekend we will be down in Salem for the Antique and Classic Boat Festival (please see flyer below) and would love to see all you GMGers come on up the line and say hi!

Thanks for the support!

Magnolia’s Roadshow

The Magnolia Historical Society has signed a Purchase and Sale agreement for the Blynman School a.k.a. “The Little Red Schoolhouse” on Magnolia Avenue . Our new facility, one of only six (2) room schoolhouses remaining in the United States will function as a local historical museum and local cultural center. However, before we can begin the journey of moving into the building we’ll need to install a new heating system and roof.

This summer we have reached out and asked for community support our efforts by donating new and used items to our fundraising event known as the Magnolia Roadshow. This year it will be on August 25, 2012 starting at 9 AM at the corner of Lexington and Norman Avenue in Magnolia and inside the Magnolia Library Center .

The MHS board is very appreciative of the response we received. It is overwhelming. Now we have hundreds, well probably thousands of items that we are sorting. Next Saturday, they will be sold at a Silent Auction, yard sale and an old-fashion public auction where an auctioneer will lead the bidding.

The day promises to be a fun event. The yard sale will open the event at 9 AM and feature something for everyone from vintage goods to household items, furniture, china baking yard and exercise equipment, toys, lamps, electronics, holiday decorations, typewriters and the list goes on and on.

There will also be a silent auction during the day and then at 6 PM a real old-fashion auction at the Blynman School . The auction items include everything from a new children’s ATV to a wooden riding horse. There are many gift certificates from local merchants and beautiful artwork by Shelia Lavelle, Jean Byrd, Sandy Herdman and Carol Liocano. In addition, Sandy Peek has restored a rowboat and James Fiahlo is building a copper boat. We’ll be posting more information on what you’ll find during the week

For a small donation to the MHS between 10 AM and noon, you can have your vintage items appraised by David Cox and Norman Larsen, two renowned antique professionals Call 978-281-0309 for an appointment or you can just walk- in.

Food always an important part of any event will include Dolly’s famous fish chowder and a bake sale.

There will be a family- friendly walk along the shore that will bring to life the rich heritage of the area and craft vendors will be lining Lexington Avenue .

For more information “like” the Magnolia Historical Society on Facebook or check our website MagnoliaHistoricalSociety. Com.

With your generosity, we will be able to nurture one of Gloucester ’s iconic landmarks back to its original luster as a revitalized community asset for all to enjoy.

Artist Talk by Ken Hruby Wednesday Aug. 22, 7-9 pm at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck.
In his Artist Talk at The Center, acclaimed sculptor and installation artist Ken Hruby will present slides of his powerful work – work that views our military culture critically, from direct experience, yet with humor and poignancy.
Ken Hruby says, "Save my earliest work in abstract welded steel, my entire body of work has been essentially autobiographical, dealing with my experience being part of the military sub-culture.  Except for a few brief periods in our nation’s growth, the military has been outside the general frame of reference to the majority  of the civilian population, even more so today with the absence of a draft and two wars being fought simultaneously.  I have tried to create work that bridges the gap between the society being served and the soldier; to start the dialog; to open the conversation.  While words cannot adequately tell where I have been and what I have experienced, the sculpture can charge the viewers imagination to ponder the inexpressible.  Humor and hyperbole are in the top drawer of my toolbox."
Ken Hruby was born at a cavalry post in the Black Hills of South Dakota and spent a happy, adventure-filled childhood as
an Army brat at a number of posts and camps in the mid-west and on the west coast. Family travel included tours in Japan
and Germany where he was exposed to cultural diversity at an early and impressionable age. After completing his secondary education in Tacoma, Washington, he graduated from West Point with an infantry commission in l961. For the following twenty-one years, he served in a wide variety of command and staff positions, including advisor to infantry and ranger battalions in Vietnam and two combat tours on the DMZ in Korea.
Upon completion of military service, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts where he
focused in sculpture and received a prestigious Traveling Scholars Award. His work has been shown in numerous group and solo shows around the country and is included in several private and public collections, including the National
Vietnam Veterans Art Museum in Chicago. His first solo show, "Mustering Out",  and subsequent shows,"Juggernaut," ,
“Minefields of Memory” and “Free Fall” were selected by the Boston Globe as  "Best Gallery Events" for the years 1989, l995, 1997 and 1999 respectively.
His most recent show, “Trepanation: a face of battle; variations on an ancient theme”, was exhibited in May at the NK Gallery in Boston. Ken teaches at the Museum School of the Boston Museum
of Fine Arts, lives in Gloucester, and maintains a studio in Boston.

Ned Liggett Has Some Nice Things To Say

Good evening Joey C,

I met you last week by stopping by Capt. Joe’s, a place you have worked since your were 9 years old. You handed me a 3 pound lobster and my wife of 30 years took a photo of us, me grinning like an idiot holding a large crustacean with a man I hold in high regard. You may have an inkling of what influence you wield with GMG but then you might not. You are a fantastic advocate for this very special place called Gloucester. It is a natural for you, your affinity and passion for all the great things this very unique community has, but you deserve credit for connecting the dots- connecting people within your community and by your gregarious bent, connecting people from outside to this unusual place that is Gloucester. I suspect that you see yourself as just a regular guy, and you are, but then again, you aren’t. You have an exceptional talent in promoting Gloucester. Keep up your good work and thanks for coordinating a wonderful blog- Good Morning Gloucester.

My wife and I are very much taken with Gloucester and we have you to thank at least in part and for this I thank you.

Love ya man, keep up the good work!
