My View of Life on the Dock
Sidewalk Bazaar 2013
Thursdays during the Bazaar are usually very slow, but not this one, as you can see. We’re looking to the west toward the end of Main Street.
Too busy to eat but famished, I escaped to Passports up the street. The owner, Eric, was outside serving up lobster rolls, and late in the day they were reduced to $10 from $12. They’re made Joey C. style, with mayo and no or minimal condiments. There was probably a full lobster in this sandwich, and I apologize for eating 1/4 of it before taking a picture. The willpower is weak when you’re hungry. Passports will have them again tomorrow.
Interesting aside: While struggling to remember the correct phrase for “the willpower is weak,” I considered going into Jalapenos to ask, but that might have been kind of weird. But just then, a couple came into the gallery. It was, I found out, Kay Lazor, a reporter for the Boston Globe, and her husband, who voluntarily helps her with editing (he was an editor for the Boston Herald). They thought “willpower” was good, and corrected my usage of commas. I don’t know them, but I realize I need to brush up on my “AP Stylebook” and “Strunk and White’s Elements of Style.” Life is so interesting, and tomorrow will be a zoo on Main Street and in the gallery. I rush forward to meet it. http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/blogs/white-coat-notes/2013/07/30/summer-first-batch-mosquitoes-with-eee-found-amherst/zUCgZIuxPt7kIHdPi5kFRK/blog.html
Tomorrow we’ll be open at 9am. Outside we’ll feature Laura Jardullo (left) of the Dress Code with her feathered hair bands, and I’ll have 50 newly (today) arrived pieces of Dave Matthews’ pottery at discounted prices. Photo taken in front of the gallery.

Actually, they already came, but that was the tagline for a wonderful concert given by the Choir of St. Mary’s, Maldon (Essex, UK) at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Gloucester on Monday night. It was one of a series of events that are being held at St. John’s in honor of the church’s 150th anniversary. The choir was composed of 16 people, plus the director, Colin Baldy, and a 15-year-old organist who both accompanied the choir and played solos on the church’s Fisk organ.
Their repertoire included pieces ranging from the 16th century to the present. I think my personal favorites were “Rejoice in the Lamb”, by Benjamin Britten, and “O Thou the Central Orb”, by Charles wood.
If you missed the concert, you can still hear them sing! The choir has videos on Youtube and CDs for sale on Google Play.
Other future musical events at St. John’s include their 150th anniversary Solemn Evensong on Sunday, October 6 at 4 pm, featuring the Parish Choir singing works of Vaughan Williams. The 25 anniversary concert of the Fisk Opus 97 at St. John’s is on Sunday, May 18 at 4 pm, featuring Thomas Baugh of Roanoke, VA, playing works of Bach, Franck and Gershwin. Both programs are open to the public and include receptions following.
Hey Joey,
Just shooting you an email regarding what could be one of the biggest threats to lobsters. Almost every striper we catch charter fishing on my fathers boat, The Connemara Bay, it is loaded up with juvenile bugs. We caught one the other day that had 10 lobsters in it! I attached the picture which includes the Bass along with the 10 victims.
The last time we were on your page was from the blue lobster we had a few years back that we donated to the heritage center.

Joey,
At the Sidewalk Bazaar today I spoke with Henry Allen and David Wesson who said they are working on a new children’s stage production for their Summer Stock Theatre Club taking place at the Cape Ann YMCA. They say they are in need of young actors between the ages of 6-12 and will be taking place from August 5 through the 16th. They hope Good Morning Gloucester can help get the word out to aspiring actors! The story is a maritime mystery using all things Gloucester – places, names, old sea stories, etc More information is available at (978) 283-0470 Sounds like fun and from the energy of these actors it will be!
.
Ran across GMG contributors Charlie Carroll and David Cox today at the Sidewalk Bazaar. Lord I am hoping they were really only comparing the difference of their lens sizes…
You know what they say about these guys with the big lenses right? Overcompensating for a lack of size somewhere else? ![]()
More from Lowell-
This just in from Lisa Smith at Cape Ann TV. She and Vickie were at the library visioning meeting last night at the Rose Baker Senior Center. Here’s a picture Vickie took of all the ideas generated at that meeting:
And here’s Lisa Smith’s report, and a wonderful video starring her daughter April!
Excite Your Children About Exploring the Library!
Last night there was a huge turnout at the Rose Baker Senior Center to create a vision for the future of the Sawyer Free Library. Many ideas were exchanged and a constant theme that was brought up is that we need to get more children into the library to exploit this rich resource. Here is “A Little Tour of the Children’s Room at the Sawyer Free Library”, made by kids for kids. Show this to your kids!

Dave says,
Greetings, comrades! And welcome to the People’s Blues Bash. This week we have that proletariat ping pong genius, Mr. Comrade Greg Luttrell. A long time supporter of the blues struggle, Com. GL has been given special dispensation to perform for the huddled masses here in the U.S.A. ,warding off uncontrollable opinions, and parlaying his great love for the Supreme Leader into a keening paroxysm of love. Catch him while you can. He is a regular at the Great Leap Forward Bar and Grill in Lohng Dhong, China for six months of the year. Now, We got him. His parole is almost up. It’s not often we get a political prisoner of the blues. He’s due to return to China in Sept., so ,girls, better put on that self-blinding eye shadow and ruby red laser lipstick and try to control your breathing!
But seriously, folks, Greg L. is a monster guitarist and vocalist and always gets everybody going into a big spin. Poor Andrew Jones…our drummer….hasn’t got a clue what he’s in for. I’m bringing smelling salts…
And don’t forget the 2nd Annual Glou. Blues Festival this Aug.10. No, I’m not playing, but I’ll be there drooling into my coozie. Please go!

One of the perhaps lesser-known antique/vintage stores in Gloucester is Vintage 211 (211 East Main St., open Fri-Sun 11am-6pm), aka “Bob and Dave’s place”.
It’s right across the street from Scout Vintage Finds, so it’s easy to visit both at once! They also have similar hours, which is convenient for planning.
I heard about this store by word of mouth, and I’m glad I did! Bob stocks a wide variety of things, but is unique in having a focus on men’s vintage (and not) clothes, and wool sweaters. Other stores I’ve visited for this series of posts have some mens’ clothes, but no one else really has it as a special focus; most often, there are as many or much more women’s clothes than men’s. Here are a few photos of the many things in stock:
And Bob is a really nice guy, too. He actually looks a lot like an uncle on my father’s side of the family, at least in this photo:
The prices are good, in some cases excellent! I ended up buying some things while there… Including a great green corduroy coat, with a tie that Bob gave me as a gift:
and a leather coat which he sold me for $30, at least a 90% discount compared to buying new (and it is in like-new condition). Since he is also a photographer, we had some fun… I pulled a “Game of Thrones” pose on a wicker chair in the store and Bob snapped some photos. He’s really good at it! I had some fun with them afterwards in Photoshop:

Every year the Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar gets better. This year, there’s an excellent music lineup all three days (see here). Plus North Shore 104.9 will host a prize wheel at which you can win very cool prizes including fall-series concert tickets from GIMMESOUND and CDs from top local artists including Chelsea Berry, Julie Dougherty, Michael Thomas Doyle, Allen Estes, Tom Hauck, Will Hunt, Orleans “Still the One Live”, Andy Pratt, Renee & Joe and T Max!

Hi Joey!
Thank you so much for being willing to entertain 26 students from the Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School this afternoon! The two-week summer session that they’ve been participating in has followed the theme of "Marine Biology and Maritime History." They have been incredibly fortunate to spend most days on the water engaged in a variety of hands-on activities. Today they had to opportunity to explore Gloucester Harbor to learn about the rich fishing industry and to see up close the large variety of vessels that call Gloucester their home.
Last week was spent learning about plankton, mollusks, echinoderms, fish, and crustaceans while conducting research at sea. After having hauled traps and having learned about lobsters, it was important to me that they see "what happens next." I really wanted the students to see a working waterfront and you very kindly supplied that opportunity! As expected, you were incredibly patient with their questions and able to hold their attention while refining their knowledge. They felt at ease with you right away and would have gladly stayed for hours had they the chance.
Not only do you now have 26 new FOBs, you’ve also helped this group of children better appreciate an industry that has been incredibly foreign to many of them. To quote one of your new friends as he boarded the bus to head home, "That place is so cool!"
Thanks so much!

Over the past few years, we’ve profiled a number of rising stars from Cape Ann. Here’s our latest pick for whom to watch: Alexandra Valenti. Her insightful songs and endearing spirit captivate audiences and keep you listening, wanting more.
You can see her live at the Town Hall Stage at 3pm during Manchester’s Festival by the Sea this Saturday. And you can be introduced to her on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. She sings three wonderfully original songs and speaks candidly — and with wisdom beyond her years — about the songwriting process and music business. Here’s a taste of what you can expect:
“I’m on a tightrope, balancing myself so I don’t choke on fear.” You can tell she’s going places if she’s already writing lyrics like that. You might as well catch this rising star while you can close to home. It won’t be long before she’s playing big venues far away for a steep ticket price.
