Where Are All the Monarchs?
Monarchs usually arrive in our region by the first week in July and go through several brood cycles. This year, barely any arrived. The Monarch’s sensitivity to temperature and dependence on milkweed make it vulnerable to environmental changes. Since 1994, U.S. and Mexican researchers have recorded a steady decline in the Monarch population in their overwintering grounds, with 2012-2013 being the lowest recorded to date.
Temperature change and habitat loss affect breeding success and longevity. Dr. Chip Taylor, a leading Monarch researcher at the University of Kansas reports that the widespread adoption of GMO corn and soybean crops resistant to herbicides, along with with intensive herbicide use, coupled with the federal government’s incentivized expansion of corn and soy acreage for the production of biofuels have caused a significant drop in milkweed throughout the heart of the Monarch’s range. Lack of milkweed equals no Monarchs. “Monarch/milkweed habitat has declined significantly in parallel with the rapid adoption of glyphosate-tolerant corn and soybeans and, since 2006, the rapid expansion of corn and soy acreage to accommodate the production of biofuels,” Taylor wrote on May 29.

What can we do? Encourage conservation organizations that conserve Monarch habitat, plant milkweed, plant nectar plants, and raise caterpillars. Hopefully the weather next spring and early summer will be more conducive to the Monarch’s northward migration and breeding success, and if and when the Monarchs arrive, they will find our milkweed plants.

Hi Kim,
I have maybe 30milkweed plants in the front yard. I would be happy to harvest the seeds, are there places you know of that would be willing or have a large enough property to seed them? Can you harvest them as soon as the pods pop? I remember as a kid finding the most beautiful cocoon I have ever seen. I haven’t seen many butterflies at all and of the ones I have seen are not Monarchs.
My reponse:
Hi Jude, I am putting it out there in GMG Land that if anyone would like your milkweed seed pods to please contact me.
Yes, you can harvest immediately after the pods pop, as a matter of fact, I recommend doing just that and sowing your seeds in the fall. The easiest method is to lightly scratch the surface of the soil where you wish the milkweed to grow. Scatter the seeds and water. That’s it.

Ward 1 Update From Councilor Paul McGeary
This is just a quick heads-up for those of you who live near Good Harbor Beach, the Back Shore and Eastern Point. The annual Lone Gull 10K road race will be held this Sunday, Sept. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. in that vicinity. Nautilus Road will be the only road closure. It will be closed for the duration of the race, though there may be some traffic slowdowns as runners make their way along the course. This is a significant event in the New England road racing calendar, and the money raised goes to benefit the Children’s Center for Communication, a program to assist children with severe communication issues.

The city will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Day on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the DPW Yard on Poplar Street.
Residents are asked to schedule an appointment to bring their materials to the DPW yard. The Recycling Department is currently accepting appointments. Please call 978-281-9785 to schedule your appointment.
Gloucester residents are allowed to bring up to 25 pound or gallons of material at no cost. If you exceed 25 pounds or gallons, and additional fee will be accessed and payable to Clean Harbors (payable by check only, cash is not accepted). For up to 10 gallons or pounds over it is $24, for 10-25 gallons or pounds over the charge is $44.
Please understand that we can only accept hazardous materials when Clean Harbors is on site, early drop offs will not be allowed. For a complete list of what is acceptable please click on Acceptable Materials below.

The Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St, in Gloucester, presents our 4th Annual Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 1:00 to 11:30 pm.
The Festival features ten hours of great live music starting outdoors on the grounds from 1-7pm with some of the North Shore’s best musicians covering: bluegrass, traditional and contemporary folk, Celtic, country and blues, jump, jive and boogie. Yesterday morning after filming the sunrise at Good Harbor I headed over to the harbor to film the Gloucester fleet’s comings and goings. The Theresa & Allyson was bound for port and what a beauty! She is a stern trawler, a type of dragger. You can read more about her owner, Allyson Jordan, and the boats origins here: Eat Local Fish. Also, found on the website is a concise history of New England ground fishing.
While filming, I am also photographing and plan to make more posts about our Gloucester fishing boats. I am not knowledgeable about ships and boats, but am very interested to learn, and love photographing them because they are beautiful. Beautiful Good Harbor Foggy Morning Sunrise, Snowy Egret, and Whimbrels
The sunrise in the lifting fog at Good Harbor Beach this morning looked at times more like a moonrise.
A lone Snowy Egret was eating and fluffing its feathers and a pair of Whimbrels (at least I think they were Whimbrels) were fishing and bathing along the tide pool edges.

Last night Allen Estes performed his hit, “Not With Ya Hands” about Gloucester’s hero Howard Blackburn at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was filmed for next season’s Wicked Tuna by the Nat Geo crew. And our own intrepid Lisa Smith caught all the action for Cape Ann TV. We can’t show you everything we shot until early next year when Wicked Tuna Season 3 premieres, but we can show you Allen’s performance right now and you can catch a glimpse of the film crew at the end.
Best of all, you can see Allen Estes live with a new six-piece, all-star band on October 5th at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly. You’ll hear old favorites along with new music he hasn’t yet recorded. Allen — with his new band featuring multi-platinum guitarist David Brown with Fairport Convention founder Dave Mattacks on drums, Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, Steve Burke on keyboards and Wolf Ginandes on Bass — will have you on your feet!

Alchemy Chef Scott Jensen wins Wicked Tuna Challenge at Alchemy last night
Last night Alchemy’s chef Scott Jensen narrowly defeated chef Steve Morlino of Boston’s Union Bar and Grille (where Chef Scott got his start) at the Alchemy Bistro Wicked Tuna Challenge, which was judged by the audience, who got to taste both dishes.
Before dinner, Alchemy’s mixologist Felicia Grossi, who won the Block Party’s first Ryan & Wood Cocktail Contest mixed up her Ryan & Wood signature cocktail for fishermen and guests aboard one of the Tuna boats.
And our son, John, got to pilot the boat. “That boat’s got a lot of tech!” says John.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line, to Host Ricky “King” Russell this Thursday 9.12.2013 ~ 8:30 to 11:30
It’s back to the Three Stooges Trio this Thursday, so please welcome back that yeti of the guitar, Mr. Rikky “King” Russell. Borne and bread in and of the blues, this cat has been a fixture on the Boston scene for many decades and really knows how to twist your dials for maximum squirming. Even better, that amazing saxist and singer, that major teen idol Mr. Mario Perrett, will be on hand to help us all out. Unfortunately, our drummer under contract, Mr. Edd “Duodenum” Scheer is suffering from rupture of the deep and will be unable to join us, so, we have enlisted the aid of that swarthy bongo boy from the “Love Dogs”, Mr. “Downtown” Steve Brown. Known to change clothing in a phone booth, he’s set to fly in on time to rock the house. It’s gonna be a great nite of flying fur, bad jokes and misplaced observations. Czech it out! Hours 8:30 till 11:30.
But wait! There’s more! I’ll be hanging out at the same time same bat-channel location to witness the arrival of Ms. Mari Martin this Saturday nite at the Rhumb Line. My favorite vocalist, she’ll put a smile on your face and blisters on your feet.
She’s bringing the Low yo-yo band to prepare you for doomsday. That’s Mr. Bogus on guitar, John “Cameron” Swazey, on keys, Roger Broccolibanque, on pistons, and yours truly on base. Music starts at 9:30 when we start cranking that bumper jack between your head and the ceiling. Count on it!

I’ll bet there are many people, who read GMG regularly and have not seen any of this season’s plays at Gloucester Stage. If you’re one of those people, you’ve got until next Sunday (9/22) to rectify that situation. And it’s the perfect week to do so because Driving Miss Daisy is the best production of this excellent season.
Let’s start with the play itself. “Driving Miss Daisy” was written by Alfred Uhry, who is the only playwright ever to win an Oscar, a Tony, and a Pulitzer Prize. Perhaps you saw the 4-time Oscar-winning movie starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd. If you haven’t, I suggest you wait until after you see the play at Gloucester Stage (get tickets here). The play is much more powerful.
Gloucester Stage’s production of Driving Miss Daisy stars Academy Award nominee Lindsay Crouse (who has appeared in dozens of films, including 3 of my favorites: The Insider, Being Human and The Verdict), Johnny Lee Davenport and Robert Pemberton — all of whom give stellar, riveting performances.
We saw the play on Sunday with our ten-year-old son, John. He was skeptical. While reading the playbill before it began, John complained that it couldn’t be interesting with only three characters. “But I loved it!” he exclaimed after it was over. “It’s a great life lesson.”
“What lesson would that be?” I asked.
“Don’t be mean. You’ll regret it.”
We stayed for the “Talk Back” with the actors and director, during which Lindsay Crouse profoundly elaborated on that very concept, describing her character, Miss Daisy, as struggling to forgive herself after having pushed blame off onto others in her life.
Near the end of the Talk Back, director Benny Sato Ambush responded to a comment from the audience about how the characters faced their fears by noting the root of the Greek word for theatre is θεάομαι (theáomai, “to see”) and seeing the root of your fears helps you overcome them, saying “Helping people to see is the transformative power of theatre.”
Bravo!
