Baby Robins, Brought to You by Wolf Hill

We are so fortunate in Gloucester to have not one, but two, terrific garden centers, Wolf Hill and Goose Cove Gardens (and Corliss Brothers in Ipswich isn’t too far off the beaten track, either). Barbara and her team at Goose Cove are phenomenal as is the team at Wolf Hill–Kate, Joe, Ben, Dave, Jake, and all the guys. Baby American Robin ©Kim Smith 2014 Both Wolf Hill and Goose Cove take wonderful care of the wildlife that makes their home in the very inviting environment of their nurseries. Last year Kate kept me well supplied in butterfly eggs, which had been deposited on Wolf Hill plants, and whenever I shop at either garden center, a frequent topic of conversation is the robins because they oftentimes build their nests smack dab in the middle of a plant, or group of plants, that are for sale. Robins especially like to nest in hanging flower baskets. This year was no exception. Today when at Wolf Hill I spied a mama robin zooming away from a balled and burlapped tree. The nest was at eye level! I ran and got my cameras but filmed for only a moment because both parents found it highly disturbing. The babies were hungry, with wide gaping greedy mouths, and it was clear my presence was keeping them from their breakfasts. As soon as I turned away, the parents resumed feeding the babies.

_S956668Isn’t this sweet how they take care of the robins at Wolf Hill?

Shout Out to Chief Campanello and the Gloucester Police Department!

I discussed writing this post with my husband on Sunday, just to let people know how professional I thought was the police presence at Fiesta, when the department’s own release was published yesterday (posted here). Nevertheless, I wanted to share my observations regarding the department during the Fiesta.

For the past week I have been filming throughout the square, and in the thick of Pavilion Beach for all three days of the Greasy Pole and seine boat races, amidst the throngs of thousands and thousands. I just have to say that despite all the rambunctious craziness, the officers were without fail courteous, cool, calm, and collected. I am sure their patience was tried often enough, but whether directing traffic, giving directions, riding their horses throughout the city, or when simply standing at the sidelines, they were friendly and composed. Thanks to Mayor Kirk, Chief Campanello, and all the officers on duty for helping to make this years’ Saint Peter’s Fiesta one of the best ever!

A Beautiful Saint Peter’s Fiesta Sunday

Saint Peter' Fiesta Mass ©Kim Smith 2014Part One

Every seat for the outdoor Mass at Gloucester’s Saint Peter’s Square was filled by 10am, with people spilling out under the trees and a standing room only crowd along Roger’s Street. Blue skies and wispy white clouds above made for an exquisite June morning, while the aromas of suntan lotion, popcorn, and the salty sea filled the air. The crowd was jubilant with everyone dressed in bright pretty colors and fresh fiesta whites and especially sweet were the little girls in their summer frocks and sandals. Friends greeted friends and families prayed together, accompanied by cheers of Viva San Pedro. Bishop Arthur Kennedy gave the Mass, relating Saint Peter to the work of fishermen today, and was assisted by Father Jim of Our Lady of Good Voyage and Holy Family parishes. Saint Peter was hoisted upon the shoulders of eight bearers and the parade began, following the long established route up Washington Street to stop in front of Our Mother of Grace Club, then onto Our Lady of Good Voyage, before making its way back to the Saint Peter’s Club, where the statue was then carefully returned to the stage.

Fiesta Through the Eyes of the Little Guys

For anyone who has grown up in or around Gloucester, the St. Peter’s Fiesta has clearly served as the true kick-off to summer. But, it is much more than that. The funny thing is that the importance and significance of Fiesta has probably also changed throughout each individual’s life time depending on their age.  At times the religious celebrations have been of upmost importance… and later the rides. At times maybe the five day celebration was all about family… and later it was all about hanging out with friends.  At times it was about hoping to get a glimpse of that certain “crush” under the ferris wheel and years later it was all about air guitar at Old Timers or trying to cut in line at The Gloucester House. Still later, possibly you’ve come full circle, and celebrating with loved ones makes the Fiesta a time to truly be treasured.  At times the parade reigned supreme….and later, maybe the fireworks.  For many years playing on the beach during the seine boat races was more fun than actually watching them….and later cheering for a certain crew was equivalent to the Kentucky Derby.  The Greasy Pole has always been….well, the Greasy Pole.  Whether you love it for the tradition or the insanity, the sport or the absurdity….whether you watch it from Pavilion Beach or by boat in the harbor…there is nothing quite like it.

I’ve been there for all of them.  I have fond memories of the Fiesta that range from being a very young child, to a preteen, to a teenager, to a college student, to a bar-crawling 20 something year-old, to a “grown-up”, and now as a parent….who feels blessed to be sharing the experience with my own children. I have Fiesta memories that involve holding my grandfather’s hand as he guided me through the crowd and later memories of holding his hand as I supported him. I have Fiesta memories of holding the hand of long ago boyfriends and later Fiesta memories of holding the hand of my now husband.  Maybe the best memories are the newest….as just today, I held the hands of both of my sons while jumping from ride to ride.

So, as the mother of a 5 and 7 year-old, St. Peter’s Fiesta to me so far this year has been all about the rides, the games, and the food.  It is all about the color, the sounds, the smells…and the way they all seem to blur together.  While I may have desired to capture other aspects of this year’s Fiesta and I would love to get that “perfect shot”…..I have found myself enjoying it through my children’s eyes.

And this is how they see it.

Calling All Chefs!

I don’t know much about the restaurant business, but I’m guessing that it isn’t common practice to “copy” items from other restaurants’ menus.  That having been said, could someone PLEASE add this to their menu on Cape Ann?

We had an early dinner at the Brant Point Grill at the White Elephant on Nantucket and I could have eaten 10 of these!  So unbelievably delicious!

Lisa Steinocher Asks- “Do I Deserve A Sticker?”

Dear Joey,
Do I deserve a sticker?  So I’d thought I’d tell you my story so you can decide.  My name is Lisa (Swinson) Steinocher. I live in Lawrenceville, Georgia.  But I have loved all things Gloucester my whole life.  My father was born and raised in Gloucester.  The youngest of 8 all born in a little house on Main Street – My dad 80 years ago. A 1952 Gloucester High graduate. The oldest, my Aunt, who I just visited in the nursing home here in Gloucester is 92.  My great grand father was a Gloucester fisherman who died at sea in 1914 and is on the memory wall, William McCarthy.  My mom (the Italian side) from Boston met my dad while working in Gloucester for the summer. Married, then  a job took them to New Jersey, where I was born, then a transfer to Atlanta in 1968 and I’ve been there ever since.  But I spent just about every summer of my life in Gloucester. And when my parents divorced in 1981, my dad headed straight back to Gloucester where he settled down on the Annisquam with his wife of 31 years. Before I left Atlanta to come back up here, I looked around my house and realized just how much of Gloucester I keep close to me down home in the south.  So I’m sharing a few of the things with you.

This wonderful painting by Paul Frontiero was a wedding gift to my husband and me from my dad and his wife in 1986. It has been hanging ever since.  And Mr. Frontiero lived right near one of my Aunts because I remember my dad telling me he just walked over there from my Aunts house and picked this painting out.

photo 1
These lobster claws that my dad painted came from a 14 + pound Gloucester lobster.  My daughter is 2 in this picture, 21 years ago. Both of my daughters brought these to school for show and tell:)

These sit on my desk at home

The picture below is my family and my dads mothers side of the family, at Long Beach where I spent all my summers-on the Gloucester side of the beach, the Rockport police didn’t patrol that as much:). I’m near the middle in the navy  and red and white stripped suit. Had to be nearly 46 years ago since ill soon be turning 54.

photo 4
This is what my back patio has looked like for years.  The fish net , buoys and lobster pot are from Gloucester.

photo 5

So many memories and I’m back again, this time just with my youngest daughter, 18 to visit my elderly relatives, run (at least attempt to:) the Fiesta 5k with my daughter and just enjoy the scenery, sun, salt and sand. (And great food!)

So something made me want to share my story and I’ve been wanting a sticker for awhile now since I started reading the Good Morning Gloucester email every night.  If I don’t get down to “the Dock” I will send you my self addressed stamped envelope if there are any left.

Thanks for “listening” to my story .  Enjoy Fiesta time!!! And thanks for keeping me connected on “Good Morning Gloucester”.

New Library Director for Gloucester: Deborah Kelsey

Deborah Kelsey Profile Picture 3 (2)

The Board of Directors of the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library is pleased to announce that Deborah W. Kelsey will become our new Library Director in August.  She will fill the vacancy left by former Director Carol Gray, who retired in April after 16 years, and Acting Director Freyja Sanger, who will return to her position as assistant director.

Deborah, a native of Essex, is currently the library director at the Memorial Public Library in Medfield, Massachusetts, a position she has held since 2008.

She was the unanimous and enthusiastic selection of the Director Search Committee, which included members of the Library and Lyceum Boards, the City of Gloucester personnel director, regional library professionals and community leaders.

According to Scott Memhard, president of the Sawyer Free Library Board of Directors, “In Medfield, Deborah provided leadership and vision for a busy public library, building strong community engagement, high circulation, public programming for all ages, innovative technology solutions, and creative staff mentoring and development.  We look forward to welcoming and embracing Deborah here in Gloucester, and to her bold leadership implementing our Strategic Plan.”

That plan, developed last year by the Library board and staff with community input, aims to make the Sawyer Free Library a more welcoming place to meet Gloucester’s rapidly evolving needs, as well as a center of innovation and community activity.

Barbara Braver, a member of the Sawyer Free Library board who served on the Search Committee, noted:  “Although the Committee had a very talented pool of applicants from which to chose, it was obvious to us all from the outset that Deborah’s significant gifts made her the standout candidate.”
Mary Jane McGlennon, a past Board President who also helped with the search, concurred: “This is an exciting moment for the Library and for Gloucester.”

In her career, Deborah Kelsey has also served in various professional capacities at libraries in Natick, Framingham, Wayland, and Needham.  She is the immediate past president of the New England Library Association, and a Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners Certified Professional Librarian.  She holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, and a BA from University of Connecticut, Storrs.

Deborah told the Search Committee that “smelling the salt in the air as I was driving into Gloucester, felt like coming home…”  She said she looks forward to coming to Gloucester as the capstone of her professional career, further developing the Sawyer Free Library as a space where “the community gathers for inspiration, learning, meeting, and performance”.

Memhard said that among Deborah’s immediate objectives will be working with the library’s board, staff and volunteers to review the library’s collections for relevance; revamping the building’s public and staff spaces; overseeing installation of a modern heating and air conditioning system, and mentoring staff in their professional development.

Updated With Release Location and Map!: Second Tagged Lobster Landed At Captain Joe and Sons

Update6/25/14

Joey,

This is great information, I appreciate your continued support of the tagging program, thanks to many of you this tagging project has been a great success, we’ve obtained recapture information on 24% of the lobsters that were tagged.  This is a very good reporting rate, and although we have yet to analyze all the data we’ve collected, we do have some preliminary results to share.  Out of the 2,200 lobsters we’ve tagged, lobstermen have provided recapture information on 525 lobsters.  Though finer scale movements within the state of NH are extremely important to this study so that we can properly assess seasonal migrations, perhaps the most interesting tag returns have come from Massachusetts.  Since tagging began in 2012, approximately 50 lobsters have been reported in Massachusetts waters, four of which were caught off of Cape Cod and traveled nearly 100 miles.

The lobster that you reported was tagged on 6/16/2013 near the Isles of Shoals and it was a female.  At the time the lobster was tagged it measured 79mm which is sublegal.  Approximately a year later the lobster you reported moved approximately 45 miles (straight line distance), molted and was legal size when caught.  The majority of tagging for this project has been completed; however, we’re very interested in receiving recapture information as long as lobstermen are observing these lobsters.  Thanks again for your support and let me know if you have any additional questions.  I’ve attached a map from Google Earth so you can see where the lobster was tagged and recaptured.

Thanks,

Josh

Matt Cooney Landed This Tagged Lobster A Couple of Days Ago

2014-06-22 11.23.252014-06-22 11.24.562014-06-22 11.24.122014-06-22 11.24.33

2014-06-22 12.03.33

A couple of years ago Dave Jewell caught one and when we contacted the NH Fish and Game authority who was responsible for the tagging program they gave us all the information about where it was released, when it was released and how far it had travelled.  Hoping to get the same feedback on this one.

This was the one Dave caught two years ago-

NEW HAMPSHIRE FISH AND GAME LOBSTER TAGGED AND RELEASED ON 9/21/12, CAUGHT BY OUR LOBSTERMAN DAVE JEWELL IN GLOUCESTER ON 11/12/12

2012-11-15 13.00.27

Dave Jewell skipper of the Lady J came in a couple of nights ago and handed me this tag which was attached to a lobster and the coordinates of where he caught it off Gloucester MA on November 12, 2012.

There was a telephone number on the other side of the tag which I plugged into Google and it came up as the number to New Hampshire Fish and Game.  So I then Googled New Hampshire Fish and Game Lobster Tag and came up with this result

image

So then contacting Josh Carloni from New Hampshire Fish and Game’s Lobster Tag program I asked him more about the program and if there was any info he could give as to where the lobster that Dave caught was released or if we could put together a google map to show how far it traveled from September 21st to November 12th-

tag 247

If you have a press release about it or a google map of where certain lobsters were released and where they have been reported, that would be something that would get people excited.  anything visual has great impact.

an interactive google map would be really fun.

especially if you can put this particular lobster on there from where it was released to where it was caught.

Dave caught the lobster at Lat/Long 42.41.8/ 70.25.4

This was the info from Joshua about when it was released and the program itself-

Joey,
That lobster was tagged on 9/21 near the Isles of Shoals (42 57.186, 70 35.823), it was a female spent egger with a v-notch and it was 93.8mm.  I just had someone put your coordinates into google earth and it appears that lobster moved 20 miles.  If you would like to add something to your blog that would be great.

We’re trying to identify areas in New Hampshire with aggregations of large reproductive females and then track their movement.  It appears the Isles of Shoals area has a large number of large females with eggs and we would like to know why they are there and their associated movement.  Though we’ll be looking a variety of other information from this study, this is the major objective.  We’ll also be tagging smaller females and some males so that we can compare their movements with the larger animals and identify if they’re undertaking seasonal migrations.

We hope to tag a total of 2400 lobsters by November of  2013.  So far we’ve tagged approximately 550 lobsters and we have recapture information from approximately 70 lobsters.  A couple of lobsters have been reported travelling to the Gloucester area and two more lobsters were reported in the Portland ME area.  We really want to spread the word so that fishermen will report tags when the catch them.  There will be a raffle held in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and winners of the raffles (three winners each year) will win a 50 dollar gift certificate to New England Marine Industrial or a Grundens sweatshirt

Dana Johnson Created This Google Map Showing Where The Lobster Was Tagged and Released and Where Dave Caught It 7 Weeks Later After Traveling 20 Miles-

Click Map For Larger View-

LobsterTracking

My suggestion to Josh is instead of simply having a page where the fishermen can report lobsters caught with tags that he create a page with maps and info of every lobster released and caught with the names of the fishermen that caught them so they can generate more interest in the results with the fishermen as well as the general public and the people who are funding the studies.
