You Asked for Schooner Fest Sunday Night Activities … We Listened

Back in 2010 we presented Celebrate Gloucester featuring Roomful of Blues at the City’s newly acquired I4-C2 property on Schooner Festival Sunday because we were told there’s nothing to do on Sunday after the race. Here we are five years later bringing Roomful of Blues back to Gloucester aboard The Beauport Princess Cruise Ship for an evening Blues Cruise @ 7:30 on Schooner Festival Sunday.

The Schooner Festival has always been one of our favorite Gloucester events and we’re honored to add our little piece of cruising fun to one of the world’s major maritime spectacles!

Naomi Lee shares her art in Gloucester and around Cape Ann. Also, This Sunday August 16th 2015 at The Magnolia Historical Society from 2-6pm. 46 Magnolia Ave Magnolia, Massachusetts

Naomi Lee (Glimcher Panarello) who has made her home here in Gloucester for the past eight years was a long time resident of Revere for thirty seven years and moved on to Marblehead for 18 years. She has been interested in art since early child hood. Always creating something from paint, mud and clay, she has even mentioned how she loved to get punished, knowing she would be sent to her room on purpose. It was there she could be secluded and create her art. She remembers painting birds on vinyl window shades. Also, one of a beautiful parrot that her mother gave to a neighbor who had mentioned how much she loved it.

At the age thirteen she went to the Museum Of Fine Arts and took a course in sculpture and that’s only training she has gotten, everything else was self taught. Because of her skills she ended up working in Parks and Recreation teaching children to senior citizens to create things from clay, later working at two different Jewish community centers one in Revere and one in Marblehead. For one season she was the Art Director at the Eastern Yacht club for the summer program. This was around the early 1990’s and continued teaching until the early 2000’s. Her last position was at Temple Emanuel teaching pottery in Marblehead 2002.

Two and a half years ago she was juried into the Guild of Beverly Artists, while looking to make money to get her car fixed, during that time she did five shows and many others on her own since.

There are many paintings to see of Gloucester’s landscape these happen to be a favorite subject of Naomi’s. Paintings can be done by photo or by eye. She believes in the warmth of the sun the calm of the moon the strength of the wind and power of sea.

Naomi calls this seascape of Good Harbor a miracle painting after a serious decision in her life and seeing the rainbow confirmed her choice. This is the product of doing so.

CAPE ANN WILDFLOWERS BLOOMING TODAY!

Summersweet (Clethra alnifoloa( ©Kim Smith 2015

Summersweet

There is an exuberant abundance of wildflowers blooming in marsh and meadow all along the shores of Cape Ann and here are just a few snapshots. When out and about on a wooded walk, you may notice a wonderful sweet spicy fragrance. What you are smelling is more than likely our native summersweet (Clethra alnifolia), which also goes by the common name sweet pepperbush; perhaps a more apt description of its potent and zippy honey-spice scent.

Discover John Sloan’s Gloucester: A gallery tour with curator Martha Oaks

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a special gallery tour with Cape Ann Museum curator Martha Oaks on Friday, August 21 at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $10 for Museum members; $15 nonmembers (includes admission). Space is limited; reservations required. For reservations and tickets please call (978)283-0455 x10 or emailinfo@capeannmuseum.org.

One of this country’s most important artists of the early 20th century and a highly respected teacher, John Sloan (1871-1951) spent five summers—1914 through 1918—living and working on Cape Ann. During that time he created nearly 300 finished oil paintings, using Gloucester’s rugged landscape as a backdrop to experiment with color and explore ideas about form, texture and light. Arguably the most productive period of his career, the body of work that Sloan created during this time continues to astonish and delight viewers a century after it was completed.

The Cape Ann Museum is proud to have five major works by John Sloan in its permanent collection: Sunflowers, Rocky Neck, 1914; Old Cone (Uncle Sam), 1914; Glare on the Bay, c.1914; Red Warehouses at Gloucester, 1914; and Dogtown, Ruined Blue Fences, 1916.  Approximately 30 additional works, drawn from public and private collections across the country, will also be on display.

The New England Premiere of Enda Walsh’s The New Electric Ballroom ends its run at Gloucester Stage on Saturday, August 15. Directed by Gloucester Stage Interim Artistic Director Robert Walsh and written by Enda Walsh, the author of the musical Once, this award winning work has been receiving unanimous rave reviews during its run at Gloucester Stage. They relive their experience in a daily ritual complete with the clothes and makeup from their youth. Their surreal routine is interrupted by the fishmonger Patsy who ends up offering the sisters more than just the catch of the day. .Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at7:30 pm and Saturday at 2:00 pm. Schooner Adventure Mast Hoops Made in Gloucester by Geoff Deckebach, Greg Bover, and Bill Holmes

Schooner Adventure Gloucester ©Kim Smith 2015The perfectly formed mast hoops on the Schooner Adventure were custom made at Gloucester’s own C.B. Fisk organ building company. The Newbury company Pert Lowell makes mast hoops however the largest they have to offer is only a foot in diameter. See the video of Greg, Geoff, and Bill making the hoops, from shaping the strips of steamed ash around the form to finished fastening. Geoff Deckebach is the lead shipwright and restoration project coordinator for the Adventure. Greg Bover shares that Geoff made the ingenious circular jig. The ash for the hoops was donated by Jim Knott, who also donated the ship’s engine.

Alan McDermott/Vincent Cacialano – Dance Film “Animation Project”

Vincent Cacialano with Sarah Slifer Swift- Dance performance “Crescendo”

My Brother Daniel is the live and improvised moniker of Scott D Buchanan aka Radio Scotvoid. His original music is heavily influenced by chiptune, ambient electronica and noise; however you may hear trickles of freeform jazz, funk and even punk rock within his style. Scott will bring his knowledge of dj-ing, controller-ism and improvisation to the table for this special one-off live set made especially for Trident. http://radioscotvoid.com/

Animation Project is a collaboration between Film Artist/Animator Alan McDermott and choreographer Vincent Cacialano. The short clips demonstrate a trial and error process of ideas and techniques using animated stills with the intention to explore the energy of motion and it’s trajectory in space beyond the body.

Crescendo- Magnet is a movement performance choreographed through mind/body states and motivation, and a connection to sound and space. Concept by Vincent Cacialano, performed by Cacialano and TLAS Director Sarah Slifer Swift. http://vincentcacialano.com/

Admission is free. Voluntary donations ($10 suggested) compensate the artists. The free experience of art at Trident Gallery is made possible by those guests who support the arts through purchases of fine art and donations to performing artists.

Seating is limited. Guests may reserve seats by visiting the gallery, by calling +1 (978) 491-7785, by sending e-mail to events@TridentGallery.com, or by joining this Facebook event (please do not respond “Maybe”). Roses of Reunion for Gloucester Gardens

Bourbon Rose ‘Variegata di Bologna’ ©Kim Smith 2015

‘Variegata di Bologna’

With Reunion so much in the news, I thought readers might be interested to learn that Reunion is home to some of the most highly scented roses in the world, the Bourbon roses. Bourbon roses grow very well in Gloucester gardens and have the wonderful combined qualities of fabulous fragrance and repeat blooming. I wrote a bit about them in my book Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities (see chapter 14). Bourbon roses are so named because Reunion was formerly called Isle de Bourbon.

Excerpt from Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities!

A sepal, a petal, and a thorn
Upon a common summer’s morn—
A flash of Dew—A Bee or two—
A Breeze—
A caper in the trees—
And I’m a Rose!

Emily Dickinson

Rosa bourboniana

The Bourbon roses (Rosa bourboniana) comprise one of the most extravagantly scented class of roses, along with having a wide range of growth habit in form and height. From the shrubby and compact ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison,’ growing to about two feet, to the thornless climbing ‘Zephirine Drouhin,’ there is a suitable Bourbon rose available to fill nearly every conceivable desired effect in the landscape.

Named for the island of Reunion, formerly called Isle de Bourbon, Rosa bourboniana is a natural crossing of the China rose (repeat blooming) with the Autumn Damask rose. Reunion belongs to the archipelago of Mascareignes in the Indian Ocean and lies east of Madagascar. Originally discovered by the Portuguese, then colonized by the French in the seventeenth-century, Reunion had a diverse population of settlers from around Africa, Asia, and southern Europe. The Bourbon rose was discovered growing wild in Reunion in approximately 1817.

Hybridized Bourbon roses flower in hues of white to china pink to cerise and purple. The flowers are quartered at the center and filled with overlapping petals. With their sublime fragrance, tolerance for cold temperatures, and freedom of flowering (‘Louise Odier’ remains in bloom from June until the first frost), Bourbons are amongst the most distinctive of all roses.

The following is a list of Bourbon roses successfully growing in our garden, along with one failure noted.

‘Louise Odier’ ~ 1851 ~ Bourbon ~ Delicate china pink, camellia-style flowers, enchanting and intensely fragrant. Blooms lavishly throughout the season, from early June to November, with a brief rest after the first flush of June flowers. Grows four to five feet.

‘Zéphirine Drouhin’ ~ 1868 ~ Bourbon ~ Clear hot pink. Thornless. The sensuous Bourbon fragrance is there, only not as intense relative to some others noted here. Repeat blooms. Twelve feet.

‘Madame Isaac Pereire’ ~ 1881 ~ Bourbon ~ Deep raspberry-magenta. Considered to be one of the most fragrant roses. Six to seven feet. Note: We no longer grow Madame Isaac Pereire as its buds usually turned into brown, blobby globs that rarely fully opened due to damp sea air.

‘Souvenir de Victor Landeau’ ~ 1890 ~ Bourbon ~ Deep rose pink, richly fragrant and consistently in bloom through October and into November. Pairs beautifully with Louise Odier. Four to five feet.

‘Variegata di Bologna’ ~ 1909 ~ Bourbon ~ Creamy pale pink with rose-red striations. Suffused with the heady Bourbon fragrance. The foliage becomes tattered-looking later in the season. Slight repeat bloom, although it initially flowers for an extended period of time, four to six weeks in all. Tall growing, best supported against a pillar.

‘Souvenir de Saint Anne’s’ ~ 1916 ~ Bourbon ~ Ivory flushed with warm pink and cream single to semi-double blossoms. Sensuous Bourbon fragrance. Compact growing, ideal for the garden room. Continually blooming. Two feet. Note: ‘Souvenir de St. Anne’ is a sport of ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison’ (1843), with the similar lovely colorway. The unopened buds and blooms of ‘Malmaison’ have the tendency to be ruined in damp air, whereas ‘St. Anne’s’ do not.Bourbon Rose ‘Variegata di Bologna’ Gloucester Garden ©Kim Smith 2015Tips for improved rose culture:

BIG Shout Out to Seaport Grille

As you know many of us celebrated our August 4th birthday at Seaport Grille!

There ended up being a few more of us than expected and the staff was amazing accommodating us!

When people have a great experience at restaurant very rarely do the managers receive good emails.

Why is it people always write about a bad experience.

I wrote a friendly note to the manager Lauren:

Hey Lauren,

I want to thank you for everything regarding the reservation.
I also need to praise your staff last night! We did indeed end up having over 20 people and Amber was so accommodating and made it all so seamless. Being the control freak I am, Amber was so calm and made it all work and didn’t even break a sweat.
The waiter we had, Justin, AMAZING! I also told him I was a control freak LOL and he was just so great. You would of never known he was waiting on 20 people.
He was so attentive and he was always right there making sure everyone had a drink and it ran so smooth. He was hilarious and fit in with our crazy group of people. Everyone kept saying what great service we had.
Thanks so much again,
Alicia
