Barbara Nichols wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!
Nichols was humming today, filling orders for customers near and far. My father-in-law always puts in a request for their freshly roasted mixed nuts as do my sister-in-law and Mom adore Nichols’s fudge, all four flavors! And it goes without saying that their homemade chocolate treats make wonderful stocking stuffers.
Nichols has terrifically convenient shopping hours, particularly if you are in a pinch (for that always much appreciated chocolate hostess/host gift). They are open seven days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 9am to 8pm and Sunday, from 10am to 6pm.

How fortunate we are to be experiencing a delightfully warm El Nino December although many regions in the rest of the country are not faring as well as we in the Northeast. Thinking about where we were almost to the date a year ago at this time…see the end of this post.

4 years ago, during the early Fall, Chelsea Berry and I were trying to come up with a great way to utilize a small chapel in Manchester-by-the-Sea for a performance. The idea was a Christmas show that became known as “Holidays & Wintertide.”
Our 4th annual production was this past Saturday night, and for the first time, the show took place in Gloucester. On behalf of Chelsea Berry, Renee Dupuis, Brian Alex, Joe Cardoza, Dennis Monagle and myself, I would like to say “Thank You, Gloucester and Cape Ann!”
The night was magical, the songs were perfect and the audience was divine, so I would like to take a moment to send out some thank yous:
To Chelsea, Renee, Brian, Joe & Dennis : It was an absolute honor to work with you on this years’ show. I was blown away – as I believe everyone else was. There were moments that literally brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your professionalism, your kindness, and for sharing your talent and holiday spirit with all of us.
To Dawn Caraway and the Tavern on the Harbor: Thank for saving the day and for your remarkable hospitality in the most beautiful of settings. When we realized our past venue was unavailable, you stepped up and gave us a home, and I hope you will have us back next year. Your room is spectacular, and the acoustics are shockingly crisp… more shows to come.
To Louise Welch: You are my personal and musical Dalai Lama. You do so much for me (and the Cape Ann music community), and we are very fortunate to have you as part of our community. Thank you for always being my production sidekick and making this show such a success.
Thank you to Mark Rahilly for running sound and making the show sound exceptional. To Peter Hoare, who has worked with me on this show from the start, thank you for your production help and sharing your equipment. To Lisa Hubbard, thank you for your magic touch in making the set look so good. And to Joanne Silva, thank you for your continued promotion of my productions and all of the great musical events on Cape Ann. You are another shining jewel in the crown of Gloucester’s music scene.
Lastly, to the people of Gloucester and beyond, thank you for coming out and making the night so special for the performers and for me. This has always been my favorite production of the year, and this year was better than ever. We know you have a lot of choices in live music throughout Cape Ann, and the music community appreciates it when music-lovers come together to support a paid performance. It’s a tough environment out there for professional musicians, but your show of support for events like this reminds performers why they are on this path and doing the thing they love.
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or any other holiday, I hope it is/was merry, healthy and bright
And to all a goodnight.

The annual Discover Gloucester holiday and awards party was held today at Latitude 43. A delightful luncheon was served followed by the award presentation. A stellar group of Gloucester can-do citizens was in attendance and it was a pleasure and honor to be amongst so many who have dedicated themselves to doing tremendous good for our community, especially where so much of their work is done behind the scenes and goes unsung. Thanks to Joey for suggesting that I cover the event for Good Morning Gloucester. He wished so much that he could be there to honor Kay, Bob, and the Mayor but it’s that time of year when work at the dock is nonstop.
A rising tide lifts all boats!
Mayor Sefatia Romeo Thekan was awarded the Discover Gloucester Heritage Award, which recognizes a person, business or organization that works towards ensuring that our maritime and cultural heritage remains current and relevant.
Bob Ryan, owner of Ryan and Wood Distilleries was awarded the Golden Sou’Wester Award, recognizing a person, business or organization that has jumped into tourism to add a new dimension to Gloucester’s diverse destination.

Come on in to Minglewood Tavern this Friday night to support local families and local music! Bring a toy or donate a $5 door charge, proceeds to Action Inc, Gloucester, MA. Charting # 5 on the top 100 Reggae albums on iTunes and #8 on The Billboards, SRP’s first two albums have grown the band quite the reputation as amazing writers, rooted in Rock Reggae Jam. SRP has also been noted to have something that not all bands can master, the art of putting on high energy, dance your face off shows, with a one love mentality…that simply radiates throughout the crowd. SRP is a top-professional band hailing from Boston MA, with their unique Pulsating Drum and Bass rhythms and heavily decorated melodies, played by some of the top musicians in all of New England. (A cross between Collie Buddz, Rebelution and Matisyahu ~Rich Parara, Ingenious Concepts). Check them out here!
No more mishmash collection of wine glasses for our next holiday dinner! Thanks to David Cox’s wonderful Main Street Antiques, I found this perfectly beautiful (and highly affordable) set of vintage wine glasses, etched with flowers and finished with a swirly stem.
Got a brand new guy to unwrap on you this Thursday: Mr. Johnny BlueHorn neé Morriconi or something like that. Been hearing about this dude for years, had a chance to play with him recently and he just knocked me out. Get this: he toots the trumpet and sings and basically sends one into the stratosphere. Love his toons. A real showman! Not only that, but our old buddy Ricky “Burger King” Russell will be returning on guitar and vocals after a long recovery from cosmetic surgery. I’ve missed him! Hope I recognize him! Drum chores filled in by the spattering pile driver hisself: Mr. Ephraim Lowell. Or is it E-frame? E-mail? I dunno, but he does. I’ll be there, too!
December 10th, we officially move the North Shore Folklore Theatre Company back to Main Street!
