Last night we had a beautiful dinner at the home of one of our dearest friends, the Gale Family. Mom Kristina and daughter Sarah prepared a gorgeous dinner of salmon poached with a medley of vegetables, in parchment paper. I was too busy having fun and socializing and wish I had taken a photo of the salmon. We had sunset dessert on their west-facing porch, with its amazing views of Lighthouse Beach and Ipswich Bay.

Chasing Rainbows (and Storm Clouds)

The beautiful double rainbow that Bill and Paul captured late Saturday afternoon had faded, but I did see this on my way home.

The sky was so gorgeous I next stopped at Smith’s Cove to catch the end of the setting sun. The hues quickly changed from vivid yellow-orange to orange-violet-pink.

Sunset Swim

We’re having a heat wave,

A tropical heat wave,

The temperature’s rising,

It isn’t surprising,

She certainly can-can.

First day of summer and first swim of the season!  Last night we packed a picnic and went for a swim–the perfect antidote to a heat wave. Tonight, more of the same. We’re so fortunate to live in Gloucester, moments away from any number of beautiful beaches!

Lost & Found

Another beautiful evening on Cape Ann! I enjoyed a nice walk on Wingaersheek. I love coming home to this…

A thoughtful person found a pair of little shoes left behind and put them in the “lost & found” at entrance 1. Come claim them if they’re yours!

Coconut went for a dip in the tide pool. If it was a little warmer, I would’ve joined her. Summer is just around the corner, I can feel it.

Arethusa

Definition: Arethusa was a nymph, possibly the daughter of an Arcadian river god, and a follower of the virgin goddess Artemis. One day as she was bathing, she discovered the river god Alpheus desired her, so she fled. She ran as far as the island of Syracuse, but he kept up. In desperation, Arethusa called on Artemis to defend her. Artemis did what she could. She transformed Arethusa into a spring, but according to Pausanias, the nymph didn’t remain pure even in her transformed state. Alpheus had himself transformed into a river running under the spring so that the waters of river and spring might mingle. AND KNOW YOU KNOW.

Plum Cove, Gloucester

I’ve been saving this photograph for a year. It reminds me of Easter sunrise services I have attended, even though this is a sunset. It must have been chilly that day, because the people in the foreground are wearing coats and hats, typical of Easter mornings in the Northeast. The freshwater stream flowing down the beach is gone, and a low tide exposes rocks not visible when the tide is in. Black & white sunsets can be striking. They are abstractions, because we naturally see in color. This photo challenges our minds to fill in the colors: a visual extrapolation.

East Gloucester Residents Please Note

I received a flyer in my mail basket this morning that Americold is closing it’s lot to public access by adding a complete perimeter fence around their parking lot. There is a meeting tonight at at 5:00 pm at City Hall, first floor conference room, to discuss the imminent planned project. Councilor Paul McGeary is expected to attend the meeting along with representatives from Americold.

Although it is Americold’s property and it is their lot to fence, many in the neighborhood enjoy access through the lot to watch the sunset, observe the harbor, and more. Americold cites debris and trash, boat trailers, etc. left in the area by the public as the reason for erecting the fence. This is true, however it is the hope of neighborhood residents that the trash problem can be resolved cooperatively rather than blocking neighborhood access to the lot. The access will be lost if the fence is installed.

Please attend this meeting. Being present will show community strength.
