If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. – Abraham Maslow 1908-1970 A professor at Brandeis University during the 50’s and 60’s, Maslow created a humanistic school of psychology that advanced self-actualization as a path for personal growth, almost Taoist in its then revolutionary rejection of materialism. His books include Toward a Psychology of Being (1968) and The Farther Reaches of Human Nature (1971).
Peter Van Ness The Man Who Brought You Lats Summer’s Epic Ground Breaking Concert- “Celebrate Gloucester” On The Site Of I4C2 Tells How You Can Get Involved and Announces Gloucester Center for the Arts with 3000+ Lawn Seating.
Peter Writes-
Dear Joey,
We just launched a new Web site to make it easy for people to explore our ideas for Heart of the Harbour (I4-C2 development proposal). See here: http://www.heartoftheharbour.com/
People can sign up for alerts (e.g., the City now plans to allow each group who proposed an idea to make a presentation in January and we’ll let people know when that is as soon as we find out).
Also, we want everyone in our community to own a piece of Heart of the Harbour, so we are exploring ways to offer a stake in Heart of the Harbour to everyone who wants to get involved—even if it is for a very small amount of money. More info on that here: http://www.heartoftheharbour.com/Investment.cfm.
And of course we welcome comments.
Oh, just in case you’re making long-range plans, please keep a few dates open for the summer of 2013. You MUST MC our big opening concert in the new Gloucester Center for the Arts with 3000+ lawn seating. We won’t open without YOU!
Thanks for everything you do for our City …

Gloucester is about much more than just fish and ships
Thanks to Arianne Doud for forwarding me this piece of Gloucester coverage which was a direct result of an invite by Bob Hastings at The Chamber of Commerce who has been working very successfully with the PR Firm Matter Communications to reach out to travel writers around the country. This initiative has resulted in a large number of glowing reviews of our community by people who otherwise may never have heard about all the great things happening here. kudos to Matter communications, The Chamber of Commerce and the folks who have been funding this PR initiative.

White-throated Sparrow Dining on Winter Moth Larvae
Last May my husband and I were delighted to discover a large flock of White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicolli)rumpusing about our garden. A chorus of choristers chortling My Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada or alternatively Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody, their clear, elegant notes were heard for several days and they were easily spotted rustling about the hedge, dining on safflower seeds from the ground below the bird feeder, and feasting on winter moth caterpillars in the trees. I believe it to be a fairly rare occurrence to observe a flock migrating this far east through Cape Ann. My East Gloucester neighbor Jen, who has a lovely garden even closer to the easternmost edges of the peninsula, reported same. Her flock also stayed for several days enjoying the winter moth caterpillar banquet found in her yard. Rather than walk or run, White-throated Sparrows hop, and we delighted in our all too brief encounter with this beautiful and entertaining “Whistler of the North.”
Local Resident Bo Cleary, Fitness Coach to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale of "The Fighter," Premiers Fitness Video Series On Taste of the Times
In this first video demonstration, “Mitt Fitness,” Bo shows his training approach on how to use boxing to get in shape. Bo coached Mark and Christian before and during the filming of their latest movie, The Fighter, opening nationwide today. It has already received 6 Golden Globe nominations. In the movie, released today, December 17, 2010, Bo plays a policeman who breaks the hand of the main character played by Mark Wahlberg. The movie is based on the true story about the unlikely boxing champion from Lowell, Micky Ward.
Bo, currently living in Cape Ann, says that he has seen the movie and liked it a lot, and not just because he is in it. “It has a lot of drama, great acting by Mark as well as Christian Bale, who plays Micky Ward’s brother, Dicky Eklund. Besides that, it is a true story that happened right in our area.”
In this first video, Bo suggests starting in front of your mirror, moving your hands back and forth like a boxer does to train for a fight.

If you grew up in a Sicilian or Italian household or ever went to one at this time of year you may remember having Pinulata.
This is an Italian holiday treat that you can make ahead and leave in serving dishes around your house. Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan of Gloucester makes them, based on her grandmother Felicia’s recipe, as little bites of fried dough slathered in a honey-corn syrup mixture topped with bits of chocolate, toasted nuts and fresh cinnamon.
Hard Driving Andy “The Cowboy” McCloy comes correct with his blog of poetry with a distinctly local flavor.
When I think of Andy it’s hard not to think of the insane drunken nights spent with the Kaloust boys. But once you read his poetry you’ll see that Andy is a serious poet. When did that happen?

Did you know that the stagecoach began service to and from Annisquam in 1849 and ceased operation in 1893 when trolleys took over. The stagecoach office was located on Washington St. James Cunningham ran the stagecoach line between Annisquam and Gloucester until the Civil War broke out in 1861 and he became the first lieutenant of the 32nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers. This stagecoach is located upstairs at the Annisquam Historical Society (old fire house) in Annisquam Village (can’t figure out how they got it there).
Kat Valentine is a sweetheart of a person. I love our conversations when I get a little time to check in on her. Anyway she has a blog and now with after hearing about her redesign I figure it’s as good a time as any to remind folks to check it out.
AP – In this photo taken on Dec. 2, 2010, Albert Carver, looks at a 50-foot-tall Christmas tree made of lobster …
By CLARKE CANFIELD, Associated Press Clarke Canfield, Associated Press – Sun Dec 5, 10:55 am ET
PORTLAND, Maine – Lobster fishermen are known for bragging about who has the fastest boat or the biggest pickup truck.
Now, some of the top lobster-fishing ports in New England are claiming bragging rights about who has the biggest and best Christmas tree created from lobster traps. As the holiday season gets into full swing, a new lobster trap tree in eastern Maine is stirring the pot.
Gloucester, Mass., started the trap-to-tree tradition 12 years ago, and Rockland, Maine, followed five years later. Both are threatening to be upstaged this year by the small lobstering town of Beals, Maine, which is getting into the act with a monster tree that stands 50 feet tall.
I must admit I am not the world’s greatest housekeeper. During the warmer months, we manage to keep our home tidy-enough by vacuuming, dusting, and mopping. Very time consuming household chores like washing and ironing curtains and slipcovers, scrubbing walls and woodwork, and polishing floor and furniture are relegated to the furthest corners of my mind. With gardens tucked-in for their winter respite, my thoughts turn to the holiday season and those cozy, nesting passions are reawakened. Cooking for friends and family is my favorite holiday activity, although prior to becoming immersed in the cooking life, I go on a cleaning tear.
Our wooden furniture was looking increasingly neglected, made worse by my mindset that I must go to a store and purchase furniture polish. That only proved frustrating because when shopping at the local grocery and hardware stores I could not find a single polish that provided the consumer with a list of ingredients. Furthermore, I had to ask myself why is it that I felt compelled to purchase furniture polish, especially since we already make so many of our own cleaning products from ingredients readily available from the pantry?
After only a very little experimenting the following is a recipe with which I am quite satisfied.
4 parts canola oil (or olive oil)
2 parts fresh lemon juice
2 parts white distilled vinegar
Optional: a few drops of almond and/or lemon extract

Two families have lost there home due to a major fire on Sunday, in Rockport. Three years ago my family also lost there home to a devasting fire.
People were so kind and thoughtful so it is my turn to give back and to show there is renewal after such a loss.
So on December 18th from 10-4 at my home at 11 Stockholm avenue in Rockport..I am going to bake 100’s and 100’s of holiday cookies.
They will be for sale by donations only so hopefully we can give a big chunck of change to these families the week before XMAs.
This will be my third BAKING FOR GOOD bakesale. the first one I had raised $1300.00 for Haitan relief after the earthquake..the second one raised $2400.00 for a friend who was dying of Cancer..with a little butter and sugar we can change the world or at least our tiny corner.

I’m sure most of you are just returning from the 4am sales and are navigating through mailboxes full of junk mail of coupons for round 2. We here at the Hive thought it would be a good time to jump in on the action and send you a newsletter that may give you a break from the onslaught of deals and steals.
We know we have been slacking off on keeping you in touch with what is going on at the Hive the past 6 months and for good reason. Jon & Karen have been really busy with their new venture of creating CrossFit Cape Ann. Kind of a funny pairing of passions between Art & Athletics… we agree…but you gotta follow your passions and the process of starting the Hive has been a great reference point in our quest to start the most unique, community driven gym on Cape Ann. That being said check us out online at www.crossfitcapeann.com or check the interview Jon did with Capt. Joe for Good Morning Gloucester here and come in for a class to check it out!
Because we have the space with the new gym…Surf Movie night is back!!!!! We are really excited as this was the best community aspect of our old studio space inRockport. We are planning to have surf movie night Friday December 10th at 8pm at CrossFit Cape Ann 7 Parker St. Gloucester. You know the routine as in BYOB and bring a beach chair and friends. We haven’t decided what we are showing yet so stay tuned via the Hive or CrossFit websites.. We may also have a slideshow from our recent trip to the Sierra Nevada’s as well. So come on down.
And if you haven’t finished off your holiday shopping, remember that The Hive is your source for local non-traditional art and craft. We have new work from California Artist John Culqui, new prints form Coco Berkman, new t-shirts from both Birdswell and The Salty Garage, new hand painted driftwood signs by Karen Conant and a bunch more from all your favorite Hive Artists. Come check us out and keep in mind that 15% of all sales go the Art Haven’s programming.
*btw – our partnership with Cape Ann Art Haven was created to help them further develop their space along with adult workshops, classes and opportunities. Please feel free to suggest what YOU would like to see offered in hopes that we can make Cape Ann an even stronger, healthier, thriving arts community.
Thanks for the support!

If you have a smart phone (Iphone, Android, etc.) you may have heard about "pictograms" that allow you to access Internet content by just "shooting" the pictogram with your phone as if it were a picture. You can download the free software and start using it right away in newspapers and magazines. Taste of the Times is on the cutting edge as you can see in Wednesday’s newspaper. From now on when you see a recipe in the paper that you want to watch just "shoot" the pictogram and it will come up on your phone within seconds.
