Chickity Check It!- Marty’s Son Brian Has His Own Photo A Day For 365 Project Going

Brian reminded me yesterday whene he stopped down the dock that I used to refer to Marty as the other guy, having known Brian through his New York Waterblog a full year or two before Marty decided to move here and make all the rest of us look like amateur photographers.

It was two years ago now that I met Marty when he made that fateful trip with Brian to Gloucester for the Dory raffle from Upstate New York and Brooklyn-

Chickity Check It- Gloucester Quilter Blog and Webcam!

FOB Dot has recently started a blog about her quilting-

http://gloucesterquilter.wordpress.com/

image

Dot writes-

I started quilting about 20 years ago in the middle of a life style change. I borrowed my elder daughters Featherweight machine, got a pattern book, some fabric and set out to make my first quilt. I still have that quilt today to remind me of how far I and the industry have come.

20 years later quilting is my passion. I make quilts for beds. You can throw them in the washing machine and put them in the dryer (on low heat) and then after 20 years buy another one. They are like a good pair of old shoes that last until you need a new pair.

I favor the Log Cabin design in my quilts as the geometric pattern creates an eye appealing textural effect for me. I choose over 40 different fabrics in varying shades to accomplish this. I use Warm and Natural batting and always good quality cotton fabrics as I am lucky to have a wide variety of fabric shops in the area and never need to shop the discount stores.

I am not a smoker but I am a dog lover with 2 Labradors to keep me busy when not at the sewing machine. (I now have a Bernina) I will be breeding my year old pup Stella in a few years and all the puppies get a quilt when they leave for new homes.
I enjoy working with my hands even though they are becoming a bit arthritic. Sewing helps to keep them less hurting.

That’s all for now……enjoy my quilts

GMG Tech Talk- the Official Gloucester MA Hashtag- #Gloucester #MA vs. #GloucesterMa

Bill O’Connor writes-

Hey Joey,

I started this topic on Twitter, but I thought it would be fun to include your audience in the discussion.  This isn’t about trying to get something to trend on Twitter – its more about creating an exclusive Twitter channel for Gloucester, MA.  I just ran into a similar situation with Salem this month.  There’s all kinds of Salems out there but only one Salem, MA. Going to #SalemMa to find info on their busiest month (Salem = Halloween) is much easier than visiting #Salem #MA.

I noticed that #Gloucester on Twitter is totally cluttered with other Gloucesters – mainly Gloucester, England & Gloucester, New Jersey.  It’s enough to make someone have to dig for info on Gloucester MA, and not very user friendly.

I then checked #GloucesterMa and noticed that @GDTnews started it and think it’s a great idea. It fine tunes the aggregation of our collective data and makes finding Gloucester Mass info on Twitter so much easier.  If we follow a pattern of posting to #GloucesterMa, we can collectively Tweet occasionally on #Gloucester #MA something like – ‘Looking for info on #Gloucester #MA? Try #GloucesterMa!’

I’m with @GDTnews on this and my vote is for #GloucesterMa in all Gloucester-centric tweeting!

Thanks,
~Bill O’Connor

Joey writes in response-

Well it’s a great topic Bill brings up and I should just state that there shouldn’t even be a debate.  The official Gloucester MA hashtag for twitter should be #GloucesterMA and not two separate #Gloucester #Ma.  The answers should be plain as day when you click on those respective hashtags on twitter.

When you click on #Ma you’re going to get anything and everything that anyone has used for the #Ma including  everything in Massachusettes as well as a bunch of mother tweets. That alone defeats the purpose of the hashtag which is intended to drill down your results.  On top of that with #Gloucester #Ma you use 15 characters as opposed to 13 characters with #GloucesterMa  Those two characters are valuable real estate in a 160 character max tweet.

To make it more clear-

Click here for  twitter search results for #Gloucester and then here for #Ma and take note of what it returns (you don’t need to have a twitter account to do this)

as opposed to the far better option-click the link-  #GloucesterMa

That should make things crystal clear as to the far superior option.

Thanks Bill @kidns and @GDTnews for bringing it to our attention.  No need for a poll, this is case closed, from now on I’ll be using #GloucesterMa unless of course I need those last two characters in which case the Ma gets the ax.

Oh and BTW, you can follow your boy Joey here- @Joey_C

Terry Weber, Gail McCarthy and Nancy Gaines Cover The 20 Year Anniversary of The Perfect Storm For The Gloucester Daily Times

Terry, Gail and Nancy get all the interviews in these big time pieces-

Perfect Storm: 20 years after
Memories fresh for those closest to losses

By Gail McCarthyand Terry Weber

Roberta Tyne Smith, now 60, recalls hearing the phone ring 20 years ago this weekend — at 5 p.m. on Halloween in 1991.

On the line was the ex-wife of Smith’s brother, fishing captain Billy Tyne, calling to tell Roberta that the Andrea Gail was three days overdue.

"I was in the middle of getting ready to go trick-or-treating with my three sons," said Smith, who now lives in Manchester. "But life changed dramatically from that day forward.

"My biggest regret is that Billy never got to see his children grow up. Billy loved his children more than anything. He always looked forward to coming home and spending time with them."

Tyne and his five-man crew on board the Andrea Gail were lost in what is today known as The Perfect Storm.

And the telling of their story — both in Sebastian Junger’s best-selling book "The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea," published in 1997, and again in the blockbuster Hollywood film of the same name, released in 2000 — has made the term "perfect storm" a common part of the American lexicon.

But memories of the storm — and the Andrea Gail tragedy — remain painful here in Gloucester, especially for the families who can never forget those days two decades ago.

Nancy Gaines Piece Here-

Tragedy, film lore still driving economy

By Nancy GainesCorrespondent

In the 20 years since what’s now known as the Perfect Storm, the story of the nation’s oldest seaport reads like a tale of two cities.

The economic impact on the home of the seafaring tragedy that inspired the best-selling book and blockbuster movie has been, by most measures, a wallop. And, in a sad paradox, it’s also been a boon to a place that’s been beset by a dwindling fishing industry and is now retrofitting with retail, commercial and development ventures.

The working waterfront of fishermen who go down to the sea forever — at least 30 since the Andrea Gail, says the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association — still works.

The fishing industry is worth about $200 million to the city annually, considering the ripple effect (economists use 3.5) for shoreside businesses, taxes and temporary employment, from $56.6 million in sales last year.

Yet, the business is a shell of itself 20 years ago. Fish landings in Gloucester were 126 million pounds in 1990; 41 million last year. At 100 boats, the fleet is half what it was when the movie hit, never mind the storm.

Winter Gear You Should Buy- LL Bean is Out, Sierra Trading Post Is In

I used to buy stuff at LL Bean and got sucked in to the you can always return stuff there no questions asked policy but what I’ve come to realize is that their stuff is priced at nearly double what you can buy it for elsewhere.  so why pay double when you can get two pairs of basically the same gear for the same price and never have to sweat feeling like a creep for returning 5 year old jeans with holes in them.

This time of year when the temperatures dip and I get caught underdressed for the cold I generally address my winter gear needs.

We went to the Kittery Trading Post last week in search of  Lined Canvas Work pants but they were $80 a pair and there’s just no way I’m paying that kind of dough for work pants to wear down here at the dock so I went home empty handed.

I don’t mind paying a little extra for the right kind of gear but $80 for workpants=no go.

This morning however after refusing to turn on the heat down the dock and not being able to rid myself of this chill, I got online and checked out out LL Bean.  Their Katahdin lined canvas workpants are $79. Strike Two. Not gonna spend that kind of dough on pants that will end up covered in gurry.

LL Bean Katahdin work pants $79-

image

image

So I remember this online catalog where I’ve bought stuff in the past- www.sierratradingpost.com  They carry basically the same stuff LL Bean does only they carry national brands that are either the same or better than LL Bean and almost always they are cheaper.

Sure enough they had Carhartt Washed Duck Dungarees – Flannel-Lined (For Men) for $39.95  Half the cost of LL Beanimage

Not only that, the  base layer mock turtlenecks I get to keep the wind off your neck were on sale for $19.95

image

Normally I’d get some cotton ones from LL Bean but microfleece does so much of a better job wicking away moisture when you sweat, it’s a hundred times better for cold weather work gear.  So I got two pairs of the flannel lined Carhartt canvas pants and two of the white sierra tongass pullover mock turtlenecks microfleece.  When you spend over $100 they have a deal where they give you 25% off you order. So here’s my total-

image

image

$100 and change vs what would have cost $200 at LL Bean and that was with cotton turtlenecks instead of microfleece AND TWO PAIRS of Flannel lined canvas pants instead of one at LL Bean..

So if you consider my judgment from working on the docks all winter long all my life worth listening to, you can check them out and they offer a $10 coupon as a referral from me (full disclosure if you buy anything not only do you get a $10 coupon, they give me one too)

Here’s the link to check out Sierra Trading Post

Just Was Contacted By Fox Casting- MasterChef 3 Casting in Boston!!

I NOMINATE SISTA FELICIA!!!!!

Hi Joey!

I’m a casting producer with the show MasterChef on FOX and I wanted to let you and your readers know that we’re coming to Boston for our third season of casting!  In case you’re not familiar with our show, we are the Gordon Ramsay cooking show that looks for the top "home chef" in America.  That means that anyone 18 years and older who has a love for food (and doesn’t cook professionally for a living) is eligible.  Our show offers people of all ages and walks of life a second chance – for those who have a passion for cooking, but never pursued it professionally for whatever reason, they now have the opportunity to win a huge cash prize and learn from the best in the industry – including chef Gordon Ramsay himself.

I’m reaching out to see if you might be able to help us spread the word about our open casting call for the third season of our show, coming up in Boston on November 5th!  Again, this is a truly incredible opportunity for anyone who loves food, and we had a lot of luck last year finding amazing contestants in Boston!

I’ve attached our flyer and was hoping you might be able to post it to your blog, Facebook and/or Twitter! We’re just trying to let as many people know about the opportunity as possible and if you haven’t seen the show, it’s incredibly positive and really offers these contestants a world-class education in cooking.

I’m available to speak by phone at any time if you have questions or would like to speak directly.

Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help us spread the word and I hope to hear from you soon!
