No joke. Seasonal wine & beer licenses kick in April 1 (MON).
That means The Cave, at 44 Main Street, can sell wine again and they’re opening up at 4pm (usually closed Mondays) to host a wine tasting from 4-6pm.
They’ll have some new Italian wines at very affordable prices. Plus they always have cheeses and other goodies to taste with the wines. (You can taste any cheese before you buy it). This has become one of our favorite new spots in town. When I go in, I always let other people go ahead of me — not because I’m polite, but because I want to see what they’re getting — and when they get a taste, I pipe up, “Can I have a taste too?” I’ve discovered over a dozen new delights this way.
Here’s a video I shot about 3 weeks after The Cave opened last Summer of Vickie tasting some of their wine and cheese.
Since then I’ve learned how to pronounce the name of the wine in the video. It sounds like “Sarah Harris”. I still don’t speak Portuguese, but Laura says that’s close enough for her to recognize which wine I’m talking about.

I wanted to see if you guys could help get word out about this killer event at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center on April 10 @ 7:30 PM. Two literary rock stars, Steve Almond and David Crouse, will be reading from their work and discussing the craft of writing, rock and roll, parenthood, and anything else that might come to mind. These guys know how give a great reading, so this is not to be missed! The event is co-sponsored by The Gloucester Writers Center and Eastern Point Lit House & Press, my new venture.
Eastern Point Lit House & Press is a grass roots literary experiment that includes Extract(s) Daily Dose of Lit (featured on GMG last month), a small press, events, workshops, manuscript consultation, and anything else we can dream up. I hope to have formal announcements soon regarding a new author hosted book club series taking place at Duckworth’s Bistrot beginning in May. The host, a writer, chooses the book to be discussed. A great book, fine wine, and light snacks. It’s going to be ridiculously fun. I’ll have the entire summer calendar and ticket info very soon. You can find more information on all of this here:
Join Cape Ann TV’s staff member and videographer Andrew Love for a video composition workshop on Tuesday, April 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This class is for the novice filmmaker who wants to take their project to the next level by covering the rules and aesthetic guidelines industry professionals follow when crafting their camera shots.
Your camera is your paintbrush. Whether it cost $300 or $30,000, use it to mold the emotions and perspectives of your audience. In this workshop you will learn how to make your subjects powerful, vulnerable, attractive, interesting, and identifiable using only your zoom rocker and a tripod.
This video composition workshop is open to the public for a fee of $10 and is free for Cape Ann TV members.

A while back, two people posted photos of hawks and asked for help in identifying them. Then I saw a hawk in my own front yard, and I became really curious. After a little Internet searching, I found a blog by a fellow called Alexander Dunn: The Daily Bird (a seasonal site for watchers of New England birds). It’s a great site! (http://thedailybirdnewengland.blogspot.com)
I e-mailed the photos to him, and asked for his opinion. Here it is (along with two links to pages on his site that feature the birds he mentions)!

I’m glad you found my site and have enjoyed reading it. I took a look at the photos you sent and the first image is that of an immature red-tailed hawk. Image 2 is bit harder to tell but I think you have either an immature sharp-shinned hawk or a cooper’s hawk. They are similar in appearance but differ in size so without context it’s hard to tell. For more on both of these species you can view my website:
The "first image" Alexander refers to is the one I’ve attached with the large picture and all the little ones. "Image 2" is the bird sitting on the railing. Alexander does note on his site that a sharp-shinned hawk is about the size of a blue jay, so that might help identify the visitor. A Cooper’s hawk is roughly the size of a crow.
So, what have I learned from all this? That I need lots more practice!

Hannah Scialdone-Kimberley is a professor of English and author currently creating a biography on Annie Smith Peck (she is also married to GMG’s own Craig Kimberley). I had the pleasure to meet Hannah when she and Craig came to dinner, and very much enjoyed learning a bit about her biography-in-progress about Annie Smith Peck. About her interest in Peck, Hannah writes, “I first learned about Peck in 2007 via a poster that my father purchased for me in an antique shop that displays an image of her in her climbing costume and reads, “A Woman’s Place Is at the Top.” I had never before heard of Peck, but the image of her in her climbing costume was so striking that I set out to see who she was and what she had accomplished. After a bit of research, I became completely enthralled with Peck’s accomplishments, including her scholarship, her climbing career, her role in politics, and her longstanding commitment to the advancement of women’s rights.” Annie Smith Peck Blog

You may know that award-winning local filmmaker Henry Ferrini shot Willie “Loco” Alexander’s 70th birthday bash at Somerville’s Davis Square Theater back in January. Well now he’s edited all that footage down to a one-hour show that will air on Cape Ann TV next week on Tuesday, March 26 at 9pm and Friday, March 30 at 9pm. And, at Henry’s request, after his special, Cape Ann TV will air the Local Music Seen with Allen Estes show with Willie as guest. Needless to say Allen, Vickie and I we are honored at Vincent’s request. To get you psyched for the next week’s special Ferrini cablecast, we’re airing Willie’s Local Music Seen show this week Wednesday at 6:30pm, Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.

50 Years of Rock and Roll History
On January 12, 2013 at the Davis Square Theater in Somerville, Gloucester resident, Willie “Loco” Alexander celebrated his 70th birthday. Unbeknownst to the “god-father of punk,” his wife Ann Rearick had put together a small army of musicians to help Willie celebrate his special day. The theater was filled with 17 to 70 year old rockers from Cape Ann to London all pumped to get on stage and perform from Willie’s prolific song book. Writers Ted Widmer, Amanda Cook and Jim Dunn provided some personal history of the School Street resident. Even Governor Patrick chimed in with a birthday greeting.
Bands and players included: Dave Saginario, Roger Miller, The Boom Boom Band, The Bags (with Jon Hardy on Bass and vocals), Birdsongs of the Mesozoic with Boby Bear, Peter Wolf, Roger Miller, Andrea Gillis, the Nervous Eaters, Mike Tucker, Mission of Burma, Barrence Whitfield, Persistence of Memory Orchestra, w/ Ken Field and Marc Chenevert, Manzie, Dennis Brennen, Randy Black, Ed “Moose” Savage, Frank Rowe, John Roy, and Jon Macie, Reddy Teddy, The Darlings, The A-Train Orchestra with Alek and Rikki Razdan, David “Doc” Vincent , Dan Whalen and Ken Demaine, John Powhida and David Minahan & the neighborhoods.
The extravaganza was produced, shot and edited by Henry Ferrini as a part of the Gloucester Writers Center video archive. Ferrini said, “This is the kind of event that usually happens when you’re dead, Willie deserves it while he’s still kicking. Didn’t I hear he was going to be Gloucester’s next poet Laureate.”
The hour long show will be cablecast on Cape Ann TV.

The Women’s Fund of Essex County will host its fifth annual “Power of the Purse” fundraising event. Inspired by the Victor Hugo saying, “As the purse is emptied, the heart is filled,” this signature event includes a ladies’ evening of fabulous hors d’oeuvres and wine, together with a raffle featuring chances to win distinctive purses and bags donated by renowned designers and retailers. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. at Brookwood School located off Rt. 127, in Manchester, MA. All proceeds help fund special projects and annual grant awards made by The Women’s Fund.

The Women’s Fund of Essex County was founded in 2003 to promote philanthropy and to raise and distribute funds to organizations that provide opportunities and solutions for women and girls in need throughout Essex County.
To date, The Fund has awarded over $500,000 in grants to Essex County nonprofit organizations. The Women’s Fund is a field of interest fund of Essex County Community Foundation located in Danvers, MA.
