CAPE ANN CINEMA HOSTS ANNUAL ‘DOCTOBERFEST’ 10-day festival celebrates documentaries, marks Cinema’s first 5 years

image

Every October, the Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester hosts a large block of documentary films, called DoctoberFest. This year’s line-up features 12 great films and an author event, and runs October 1-10, but this year is different than other years, in that it marks a special anniversary––this October 1, the Cape Ann Community Cinema turns 5.

“We have always hoped for this day to come, and are so grateful to the people that have made it possible––our patrons,” says Robert Newton, Cinema founder and creative director. “I’m so awed by what we have accomplished together.”

This summer, CACC and its patrons raised over $50,000 via a crowd-funding campaign on the web platform Indiegogo. The money raised is going toward a variety of fortifications, including a new industry-standard digital projection system, lighting and signage, and a feature film called “This Is Cape Ann,” which will premiere in 2014.

The line-up for this year’s DoctoberFest is as follows:

“Ocean Frontiers” [Tues. Oct. 1 @ 7:30pm]––How do we meet our ever-expanding demands on the ocean, without destroying it? The answer is explored in this award-winning film that presents inspiring stories of citizens coming together for the sake of their sea. Hosted by Sea Commons, the newly-formed local citizens’ group, which is offering tickets for just $5.00.

“In Conversation With… Author Ben Urwand” [Wed. Oct. 2 @ 7:30pm]––This author event features the acclaimed writer of the new book “The Collaboration,” which suggests that the Hollywood studios worked closely with the Nazi regime during the 1930s to tailor their films for a German audience. All guests of this event receive a free movie ticket.

“Herb & Dorothy 50×50” [Thurs. Oct. 3 @ 7:30pm]––Prolific art collectors Herb and Dorothy Vogel made one of the largest gifts in history, a whopping 2,500 pieces divided up among all 50 U.S. states. Director Megumi Sasaki personally presents her film and hosts a Q&A after.

“Furever” [Fri. Oct. 4 @ 7:30pm]––Join Cape Ann Animal Aid in this benefit evening with the new film that explores the dimensions of grief people feel over the loss of a pet, examining the sociological evolutions of pets in the U.S. today, particularly their position in the family unit, and how this evolution is affecting those in the veterinary profession and death care industry. Not for the super-sensitive.

“La Camioneta” [Sat. Oct. 5 @ 2:30pm]––Every day dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted, and resurrected as the brightly-colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day.

“Red Obsession” [Sat. Oct. 5 @ 5:00pm]––For centuries, Bordeaux has commanded a mythical status in the world of fine wines as a leitmotif of wealth, power and influence, and recently, prices for its prestigious “first growth” red wines have been breaking all records, thanks to a booming Chinese economy. Narrated by Russell Crowe.

“Good Ol’ Freda” [Sat. Oct. 5 @ 7:30pm]––The Beatles’s secretary, Freda Kelly, is the enchanting subject of this warm, untold tale. Featuring a live Beatles set by local tribute band Studio Two.

“This Is Spinal Tap” [Sat. Oct. 5 @ 10:00pm]––Rob Reiner’s 1982 mockumentary, starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer as England’s loudest (heavy metal) band, has been called “the funniest movie ever made.”

“Nicky’s Family” [Sun. Oct. 6 @ 4:00pm]––Englishman Nicholas Winton (now 102 years old) organized the rescue of 669 Czech and Slovak children just before the outbreak of World War II, a story that would have been forgotten were it not for his wife’s discovery of a suitcase in their attic 50 years later. Eva Paddock, one of “Winton’s Children,” will appear at the screening and will host a Q&A after.

“The Act Of Killing” [Sun. Oct. 6 @ 6:30pm]––Documentary titans Werner Herzog and Errol Morris produced this haunting tale of mass murder, perpetrated by Indonesian gangster Anwar Congo in 1965-66, when he personally killed over 1,000 people. Congo reenacts some of his favorite murders for the cameras, and speaks about his memories and feelings. Not for the super-sensitive.

“The Triumph” [Mon. Oct. 7 @ 6:30pm]––From a tiny village in Bosnia-Herzegovina comes a warning to the world…and a message of hope. Does one woman know the future of mankind, or is it (Catholic) mass hysteria?

“Room To Breathe” [Tues. Oct. 8 @ 7:30pm]––A San Francisco public middle school, part of a troubled district high in suspensions and disciplinary actions, is introduced to mindfulness meditation. Hosted by Brenda Kelleher.

“Doctored” [Wed. Oct. 9 @ 7:30pm]––This shocking new documentary on the monopolization of our medical system is hosted by O’Maley Mobile Fitness.

“Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm” [Thurs. Oct. 10 @ 8:00pm]––Director Jacob Hatley’s intimate documentary finds Levon Helm (legendary member of The Band) at home in Woodstock, NY, in the midst of creating his first studio album in 25 years. Shot during the course of two-plus years, this highly anticipated film focuses in on the four-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member after his 2007 comeback album, Dirt Farmer, brought him back to the spotlight. With a live Band tribute by Joe Unis, Ryan Alto & Friends.

Tickets for all features are $10.00 adults, $8.50 students & seniors, and $7.00 for Cinema Members. Tickets for all features are available at the box office, with tickets for select features available online atwww.CapeAnnCinema.com.

The CACC’s next festival is the Cape Ann Film Festival, which runs from November 1-17, with the line-up to be announced on Friday, October 11th.

Rocky Neck Gallery’s Summer Artists Series: Family Trees

Rocky Neck Gallery’s Summer Artists Series: Family Trees
Mixed media assemblages by Stephen Thomas Martin
Wednesday, September 25 – Sunday, October 13, 2013
Artist’s reception on Friday, September 27, 6-8 PM

family tree

Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the next Summer Artists Series show: Family Trees, featuring the mixed media assemblages of Stephen Thomas Martin. This is the last exhibit in this series for the gallery’s 2013 season. And the first time Rocky Neck Gallery is exhibiting the fascinating and mysterious assemblages by Martin of Amesbury, MA. This new show opens Wednesday, September 25 and runs until Sunday, October 13, 2013.

Martin’s art is both literally and figuratively about reclamation. While the literal incorporates found objects to form the “ground” of the pieces, of more importance, is the figurative element. The search for unique “found objects” he uses in his pieces is a big part of his creative process. In many of his works he incorporates old photos of individuals he discovers at antique shops and flea markets.

As Martin states, “Using these photographs I am giving new life to people long forgotten by family, friends and society. They have not only been reclaimed but are indeed reclaiming a place in the existing world, not to be forgotten again.”

Martin is a self-taught artist now working full time to meet the demand for his assemblages. Prior to this new career, he owned and operated an antique and retail furniture business for twenty years in Newburyport, MA. Martin is the founder and owner of Gallery 206, a pop-up experimental gallery in Amesbury, MA. He is also represented by Galatea Gallery in Boston, MA and is a juried member of the Cambridge Art Association, of Cambridge, MA and Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, MA. His award winning work is juried into many prestigious shows along with residing in several private art collections throughout the USA. The corporate collections that currently own his assemblages are Growth Coach Management Consultants, Kodiac Venture Partners, and the Italian movie production company, Blue Suede Shoots.

Please join us on Friday, September 27, from 6-8 PM for an artist’s reception. Meet Stephen Thomas Martin and learn about his process reclaiming and reinventing new lives for discarded objects.

Rocky Neck Gallery is located on 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester. The hours are: Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 6 PM, Thursday – Saturday: 11 AM – 8 PM. Free parking is available.

Red Cross worker deployed to support flood relief in Colorado

Ron Beckley

The American Red Cross is supporting rescue operations in Colorado by providing shelter, food, relief supplies and comfort to thousands of people forced them from their homes by flash flooding.

Red Cross workers from the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts are now accepting deployments to help residents recover. Ron Beckley of Gloucester, who specializes as a Disaster Services Technology Supervisor, has been deployed to Colorado.

Disaster Services Technology specialists are responsible for all the technology that is deployed on disaster relief operations. DST volunteers set up satellites where all phone and internet services have been disrupted, they set up computer services in remote locations for Red Cross caseworkers and often have to repair equipment in crisis situations.

More than 800 trained Red Cross disaster workers are staffing shelters and evacuation centers. The Red Cross has delivered more than 17 truckloads of relief supplies to residents – more than 5,000 items have already been handed out. Volunteers are working with community partners and have served more than 15,000 meals and snacks.

Flooding has also destroyed homes in Guam, New Mexico and Texas. Red Cross workers are also helping in those areas by providing shelter, food and comfort for people in need.

Beckley, in accepting this deployment, is gaining more experience working with Red Cross experts throughout the U.S. When he returns to Massachusetts, his knowledge will help better inform our efforts, and help make our local region stronger.

Donations can be made by visiting redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. People can also text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit redcross.org or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

  Angela Cook Reports-

_MG_7065

Last night, the Rockport School Committee honored Bob Cannon, Phil
Nutting, Jim Schell and Angela Cook for their commitment to the Rockport
Electrathon program.  Bob Cannon has been the backbone of the program
since its inception at RHS.  Phil and Jim provided ongoing and very
valuable consulting and advice along the way in all things engineering.
Angela took endless photos of the building, race days, team, etc.  All
of us attended the events, which were held at Lime Rock Park in
Lakeville CT, a LONG drive from Rockport. On race day, we leave Rockport
around 2am to head west to the New York/CT/MA border to a beautiful race
track in the mountains.  The team competes with other schools in the
northeast region in an endurance race with electric race cars they
design, build and drive.  It is an absolutely invaluable and innovative
program, and one that has brought about much pride and incredible
commitment from the students involved.  The Electrathon America races
are held in CT twice a year.  Rockport has been competing for five years
now.  The new Tech Design teacher Dave Young has now gotten involved in
continuing in Bob Cannon’s footsteps with this program.  Our very
generous Education Foundation for Rockport has helped fund the program.
Attached are photos from the event, including one with those who
received Certificates of Appreciation along with former Rockport High
School student Ben Cook, and current Rockport High School student Jeremy
Wesley.

A Parsons study.. From Lowell Peabody

A little work on Parsons Street… I really liked the idea of a fishing net painting but thought it would be fun to see a real net in place. Bear in mind this concept is definitely not OSHA approved…or in anyway encouraged!! The first shot shows current conditions, the second with the new fishing net in place, and then the third is just an extreme. Now I’ll have to find Bob and show him what I did to his street…
