Friday Night’s Bash at the RAA

The Rockport Art Association continued the celebration of its 90th year with the opening of the show “Outside In”, featuring the work of contemporary Cape Ann artists Gordon Goetemann, Ruth Mordecai and Jon Sarkin. An exhibit of exclusively contemporary works is unusual for the RAA, and the place was buzzing at Friday night’s opening. Here are just a few shots of a great night: (For more info on the show, click here.)

St. Peter’s Fiesta is Gloucester, Massachusetts’ longtime early summer tradition that keeps the city in the grips of anticipation for 11 months of the year as it awaits the gala celebration that honors the patron saint of its heritage, St. Peter. Sam Hartson’s brand new documentary “This Is Fiesta” offers a glimpse at the Italian festival that the residents of America’s oldest fishing port hold so dear.

Exhibition of St. Peter’s Fiesta Photos by Greg Cook

Greg Cook Photo

Greg Cook will exhibit his photos of Gloucester’s St. Peter’s Fiesta in the front window of Mystery Train, 21 Main St., Gloucester, from June 23 to July 3, 2011. Cook will be present at a 30-minute exhibition reception that will be held in front of the store window a half hour after the conclusion of the greasy pole contest on Saturday, June 25. So somewhere around 7 or 7:30 Saturday night.

This small exhibit, in the window where the St. Peter’s statue was displayed for many years, features Fiesta highlights from the past three years—from greasy pole walkers to the procession of statues and icons of saints through downtown Gloucester, from seine boat races to a pie eating contest. Over 15 years of photographing the St. Peter’s Fiesta, Cook has taken his camera onto the greasy pole platform and into seine boats, followed greasy pole champions as they were carried up Pavilion Beach and stood next to Cardinal Sean O’Malley in Holy Family Church as he blessed the procession. His photos of St. Peter’s Fiesta are a comprehensive and intimate account of Gloucester’s great summer ritual.

Cook’s photos can be seen at gregcookland.com. In addition to St. Peter’s Fiesta, Cook has spent years photographing community-building spectacles across the region—Chinese New Year Lion Dances in Boston, the Honk Parade of radical marching bands in Somerville, the Festival Betances greased pole climbing contest (vertical versus Gloucester’s horizontal one) in Boston, the monster costumes of the Mirabal Carnival Dancers in Lawrence, St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston, and the Boston Caribbean Carnival. A selection of his photos of Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont from the past three years appeared in the June 2011 issue of the national art magazine Juxtapoz.

Cook lived in Gloucester for 11 years, including a stint reporting for The Gloucester Daily Times, before moving into Boston to write for The Boston Phoenix. He now lives in Malden. He organized a guerrilla exhibit of 21 artists and collectives at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts on June 15, 2011, that was reported widely, including on WBUR radio, the Boston Globe, GoodMorningGloucester, and, nationally, on the front page of the Huffington Post. Cook is the founding editor of The New England Journal of Aesthetic Research (which won a 2009 Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant), an award-winning cartoonist (his comics have been published in Nickelodeon Magazine, Publishers Weekly, The Believer and many other places), and founder of The New England Art Awards, a regional open-source contest supporting art created here.

Fort “Art, Rock!” Found!!

The “Art, Rock!” I was inspired to sketch by my Father was found Saturday at the Fort Playground.  Janey Brancaleone and her Dog Lola Were walking at the Fort Saturday when Lola sniffed Out the Rock under one of the Park Benches at the Playground. It’s a Beautiful and underated place to watch the Harbor action go by.

Art Critics can be Tough. But I think I passed Lola’s Art Test. She Sniffed the Rock out and didn’t Pee on it! what Artist could ask for more?  That will be the one Art review that I will cherish for a long Time! 🙂

Thanks Again Janey and Lola.

Judy Robinson Cox Blue Docks On Translucent Film At The Rocky Neck Gallery

P1010060

P1010063

Judy Robinson Cox is hands down the most creative photographer in Gloucester based on the materials and the way she presents her photographs.   Between the books, the Lilliputian series, the distressed paint photos, the translucent photos that you hang in windows, there is no-one getting as creative as she is with the materials and how her unique art is presented.  Any gallery that hosts her work should be genuinely honored to have her because she continually pushes the boundaries of traditional photographic fine art.

Not only that, she tirelessly collaborates the N E W S   F R O M   R O C K Y   N E C K newsletter which an aggregation of Rocky Neck Art Colony Members news, for nothing, because she is one of those people who give and like to help others.

Cape Ann Artisan Tour this Saturday and Sunday 10AM to 5PM

Joey already posted two weeks ago here about the 2011 Cape Ann Artisan Tour but it’s only two days away. This is one of Rubber Duck’s favorite events so get out and find her.

Rubber Duck Quick Tip: click and print this brochure. A simple map and description of the 14 stops. You get tours of pottery studios, find out how they fire those pots, see the world’s biggest color printer, all sorts of cool stuff. If you do not know the artists that are hiding in the woods on this island this is a great way to find a bunch of them.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony Is Looking for Old Rocky Neck Photos

Judy Robinson-Cox writes

Looking for Old Rocky Neck Photos
The Rocky Neck Art Colony is looking for old photographs of Rocky Neck to include in a History of Rocky Neck exhibit in the Rocky Neck Gallery.  If you have any photos taken before 1990 that we could borrow, scan and return to you, please contact Judy Robinson-Cox (judy@robinson-cox.com). Specifically, we are looking for photos that show the character of Rocky Neck including the artists that worked here and their studios and galleries. The older the better. If we use the photo, we will display it with a short description and credit line for the photographer.

Judy may I suggest you head down to the Cape Ann Historical Museum and see our boy FOB Fred Buck in the archive room?  If anyone hasn’t figured it out by now, they have an incredible amount of old photos and a staff of caring people who would like nothing more than help you access it.

Go see our man-

Terry Weber Covers The seARTS Bass Rocks Art Show

click the picture for the slide show

Photographer Skip Montello enjoys a talk by Joy Dai Buell

Terry Weber writes-

Hi Joey,

I attended the seARTs Art Show at the Bass Rocks Golf Club as your “Rookie Reporter” or “Guest Reporter” — not sure what to call myself. Anyway, the show was wonderful and included the works of over 25 local artists with their pieces displayed throughout the Bass Rock’s event room. There was also a great food spread, cash bar, panel discussion led by educator Joy Dai Buell, raffle and Viewer’s Choice Award. (more to come on who won award).

One of the great things about the show was the pride and passion of the artists, and it showed in their faces and words. Speaking of faces, a few of the photos had sun-glare which sometimes worked out in a strange way. Look at the photo of Martha Wakefield; I think its the third one in the set. If you look into her painting you can see a reflection of her face.

Greasy Pole – The Musical SPECIAL GMG PREVIEW!

Good Morning Gloucester was granted exclusive access to the final dress rehearsal of Greasy Pole -The Musical before its opening on June 16. All we can say is that if you are lucky enough to have tickets or intend to get them, you are in for a real treat. This production could have just as easily been titled, Gloucester-A Celebration of Community. It will warm your hearts and remind you of what this place is all about.
