Did you Know? (Roseway)

(by Good Morning Gloucester contributor, EJ LeFavour)

That the Schooner Roseway hauled out this morning at Marine Railways? She’s a beauty. Stop by the Railways and check her out. Here’s some interesting history about her.

History of the Schooner Roseway
In the fall of 1920 a Halifax, Nova Scotia, newspaper challenged the fisherman of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to a race between the Halifax fishing schooners and the Gloucester fleet. Therefore many schooners, such as Roseway, built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races.

North Shore Arts

North Shore Arts Association concludes its 2011 Season
“Featured Artists” Exhibits with shows by Dianne Panarelli Miller and Cathy Landergan

Diane Panarelli
Last Light by Diane Panarelli Miller

From Monday, October 3 through Sunday, October 23, portrait and landscape artist Dianne Panarelli Miller’s works will be on display in the Gordon Grant Room.  Miller has received many awards locally and nationally in the thirty years she has been painting and is represented in many fine galleries, as well as in hundreds of private collections.  She is a signature member of the New England Plein Air Painters and has the distinguished honor of having been named “Copley Master” at the Copley Society in Boston.  She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America.  A full-time painter, Miller is comfortable doing portraits and landscapes as well as murals and cityscapes.  In an effort to produce work unlike anyone else, she paints in her “own voice” from life and not photographs.  To see more of her work, visit www.diannepmiller.com.

Old Salt, circa 1890

Old Salt, circa 1890 Anonymous/ ©Fredrik D. Bodin
I love this photograph, and affectionately call the subject  “Old Salty.” I like it so much it’s my profile picture on Facebook. This is a classic Gloucester fisherman image, with oilskin, sou’wester hat, and old fashioned beard. What’s really striking is the far away look in his eyes. He’s seen it all: Weather, endless ocean, severe hardship, and extreme danger. The portrait is carefully posed and lit – probably taken for the tourist trade. I was told that Old Salt could be Jessie Bates or Rufus Bates Parsons, and was taken in Gloucester.
If you know Salty, please let me know. In the meantime, today’s tourists who have seen my Facebook page will come to the gallery looking to meet the fisherman with the beard.

Cape Ann Studio Tour Day 2

Rubber Duck’s feet are worn to a frazzle but the duck crew nailed four more studios today. One more day on Monday to go. Too many studios to describe each one but if you click on the photo you go to a Google Plus album where Rubber Duck makes a comment on each photo.

If you will notice Rubber Duck is sporting a lovely necklace that was a present from Beth Williams. That was the first stop today so RD was styling all day long. What has Homie presented to Rubber Duck beside a bite in the  duck butt? She is starting to rethink her trans-species relationships.

This was a shot of David Archibald’s pottery (More inside the album). David was so busy ringing up sales Rubber Duck didn’t get any one on one with him.

One more day. Download the map and brochure.

Artober Opening Photos At Bodin Historic Photo Covered By Fr Matthew Green

Good evening, Joey! I just got back from the Artober opening at Bodin Historic Photo.  It was great to meet Kathleen Miller, who is a wonderfully talented artist. Besides the paintings – which seem to glow with their own light – there was a great selection of photos and other art, and delicious wine and finger food, including some home-made strudel good enough to knock your socks off.

Cape Ann Artisans Studio Tour Part I

The Rubber Duck and Crew had a swimmingly good time today as you can see. RD is in a birdbath created by Judith Wright using glass as a mosaic.

The crew has to get to the wine tasting at Shalin Lui then to Fred Bodin’s opening for some more wine and cheese so I can’t describe the whole tour right now. Click the photo above and Les Bartlett’s amazing South  Tower shot, Margaret Rack’s Walnut Ink, Mi Robert’s toes, and her “B” next to the duck, jars of glass for mosaics,, and Marty Morgan who was displaying a Good Morning Gloucester stickah in her kiln before we even got there.

Wine, cheese, chocolates, M&M’s and that dog on the rock is not stuffed. The dragon in Les’ space is stuffed as well as the church glass lamb.

Gotta go, correct later when I do Part II. Print the Artisan Tour map and brochure out

What a beautiful day to paint! From Kathy Chapman

Dianne Miller was enjoying the clear air today painting this harbor scene. She is the featured artist this month at the North Shore Arts Association.

Cape Ann Artisans Tour this Sat/Sun/Mon!

Cape Ann Artisans Studio Tour is this weekend! If you see this banner while driving around Cape Ann this weekend, ( including Monday), just pull in and check out the art that is being made on our island. Better yet, print this brochure out right now and stick it on the dashboard of your car. Using all three days of the Columbus Day Weekend wisely you should be able to check out all of the fourteen studios that are packed with great stuff to check out and purchase. Get your Christmas shopping done early.

The Rubber Duck and I are going to start at the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show at 10:AM on Saturday and work my way around the island clockwise. Hmm, that would mean we would have to go all the way around to get to Marty Morgan’s kiln. Maybe I’ll start at the bridge …
