Jeff Weaver painting on Pleasant Street

I was walking down the Pleasant Street several days ago when I saw him with his easel on the sidewalk, almost right across Prospect Street from St. Ann’s School.  He courteously let me snap a photo of him while he worked – apparently, I was something like the 15th person to photograph him that day… He has a gallery at 16 Rogers Street here in Gloucester (open Friday and Saturday 1-5 p.m., also by chance or appointment). His website gives you an idea of his beautiful work.  I haven’t made it to his gallery yet, but after perusing his web gallery, I really want to go!

The Music:
MICHAEL GREGORY
Songwriter, Composer, Improviser, Poet and Music Producer.  A musical innovator and brilliant improviser, always on the cutting edge, Michael Gregory has recorded for Arista, RCA, Island and other labels and headed the power-trio Signal.  Michael has successfully straddled the pop and improvised music worlds since the beginning of his career in the 1970s. Michael’s influences vary widely, from Stravinsky to Cage from Hemphill to Ellington from Wonder to Bacharach.  As a composer and a performer, Michael possesses his own very unique, highly creative and fertile voice; quite simply, he sings like an angel and plays directly from his deeply inspired spirit.  Michael is living in Gloucester, writing poetry, composing music for various ensembles, recording, performing and teaching in Europe and America and producing various projects.

The Visual Art:
ROCKY DELFORGE
Rocky Delforge is a young Rockport contemporary artist/printmaker who embodies a new force of creative energy on Cape Ann.  He has curated the Center’s September show, Community and Identity, which will be on view during Music as Muse; the exhibition presents the concepts of the individual, the community in which they live, and the relationships that form between them.

LOREN DOUCETTE
As a muralist and a water colorist for many years, Loren returned to art school in 2007 in search of a voice and a line of her own. Her dynamic works in pastel, acrylic and collage are driven by a search for truth in drawing. Inspired by both the landscape and the figure, her works bridge the intersection of realism and abstraction. As she works from observation, she thrives by the freedom to depart from her source at any second.

EILEEN MUELLER
Rockport painter Eileen Mueller works across paint media, capturing the essence of musicians, the figure, and landscape in moments of time and light.  Classic yet experimental in her painting, Eileen’s amazingly deft skill allows for a prolific and wide-ranging practice and has earned her a solid reputation as one of Cape Ann’s finest artists.

RUTH MORDECAI
Ruth Mordecai’s work is defined by a strong, painted, gestural line and her history as a sculptor.  It is inspired by figure, dance, landscape and Biblical story. A partial list of collections include:  the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem; the Wiggin Prints and Drawings Department of the Boston Public Library owns 30 of her works on paper 1970 – 2011. She has a BFA and MFA from Boston University School for the Arts. Her studio is on Rocky Neck and overlooks Smith Cove.

A Few Pics from the Art Exchange in Rockport, Where Art Was Exchanged. And Not Exchanged.

Here are just a few photos from the first Art Exchange on 8/18 on White Wharf in Rockport, with more to come in the future. We had a lot of fun listening to bluegrass and eating non art event fare such as hot dogs and popcorn before and after the Exchange itself. We had 18 participants and many more spectators, and the results of the evening were really interesting in terms of which pieces were considered most desirable in this flash art marketplace. For a little post-exchange analysis, check out the event’s website www.artnowrockport.com and sign up for the Art Now newsletter (which maybe comes out 4 times a year, so don’t panic) to learn what else is being cooked up over at Art Now Rockport.  A HUGE thank you to Peter & Thi Linh Wernau of Wernau Asset Management and Ross Brackett of Brothers’ Brew — all of whom are big supporters of art (and other) events in Rockport. And another HUGE thank you to those of you who supported this project on Kickstarter. It was a great experience to crowdsource the funding for the Art Exchange and we reached our goal, thanks to you.

Last night we were at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich. Beautiful night! Entrain was amazing as usual.

The grounds are incredible. This building is the casino. Here’s more info on Castle Hill.

Elizabeth Gauthier Gallery

During the block party, I discovered that a new gallery has opened on Main Street!  The sign isn’t up yet, but it showcases the work (in several different artistic media) of Elizabeth Gauthier – hence, the name “Gauthier Gallery.”

The gallery mostly contains her own work, but also some work by her sister.  Besides oil and acrylic paintings, she paints custom t-shirts!

Is that cool or what?  Here is the artist with some of her work:

During our conversation, she mentioned that she plans on teaching as well as doing her own paintings.   As I mentioned before, her sign isn’t up yet, but the gallery is actually on Main Street in Gloucester, between Sal’s Barber Shop and the Compass Rose tattoo place (right in the middle of the photo below):

Hi Joey,

We have a little over a week left until the 36th annual Magnolia 5K and 1K Fun Run.  As you know, 100% of the proceeds go to the Magnolia Library and Community Center.  For the first time we are also helping the Library by raffling off a couple of fantastic luxury box Red Sox tickets, courtesy of Dennis Drinkwater and Giant Glass.  These $850 seats are in the EMC Club level and just below the press box behind home plate..  I am sending along our mail form with more information, but the best way to enter is with a credit card by going to www.magnolialibrary.org and clicking on raffle banner.  Each entry is $10 and 5K racers can enter for $5.  The drawing will be held just after the race on August 30 at around 7:30 in front of the Library.  You don’t need to be present to win.

Thanks,

Randy

PS We are getting the race shirts in this week and thanks to your input we are going again with the dry-fit material.  First 100 entries to the 5K get a free t-shirt.

Blueberry Mug Up Overload – And the Winners Are . . . drumroll please!

I am still reeling from blueberry and sugar overload from yesterday’s Mug Up Blueberry Bake Competition.  In addition to baked entries by Deb Shradieck, Joanne Souze and Joy Kasmer, there were also blueberry crumb cake and blueberry pie donations (thanks Violet Gray), as well as blueberry deviled eggs (unexpectedly good – it was Ed Collard’s idea) and the always delicious non blueberry contribution by Paul Morrison of Latoff Farms Monkey Bread.  Madfish Sushi god, Jordan Ruben’s father Greg was visiting and joined in the fun, and long time no see friends Pete and Joyce Chamberlain were in the house.  Of course, H.A. Lind was there with her beautiful exhibit of new Cape Ann focused paintings, here at the gallery through August 30.  If you missed her well attended opening yesterday afternoon, she will be having a meet the artist reception on Sunday, August 26th from 2:00-4:00.

The Winners of the Blueberry Bake Competition were:

#1 Best Overall Entry – Deb Schradiek’s Blueberry Cake

#2 Best Presentation and Most Unique – Joanne Souza’s Blueberry shortbread squares with fresh mint

#3 Best Blueberry Pancake You ever tasted in your life – Joy Kasner’s awesome huge blueberry pancake.  In addition to being a great blueberry pancake maker, Joy is also an amazing psychic and is still giving angel readings at the gallery, by appointment or evenings Thursday through Sunday.

The Esteemed Judges were major foodies Ed Collard and dapper looking in paisley, Paul Morrison, and Maine born and bred blueberry expert and Wendie Demuth’s squeeze, Langley Willauer.

After Hours at the Cape Ann Museum

If you were not at the Cape Ann Museum Summer “After Hours” event last Thursday, August 16, you really missed out!  This museum is one of the under-recognized jewels in Cape Ann’s cultural crown.

There was great music, great food from Alchemy,  live music/dance pieces featuring Sara Slifer, Kristen Miller, and 3rian King… and the personable staff and breathtaking art that you can always find at the Cape Ann Museum. Here are some photos.

Their next event is today at 3PM:

Elyssa East, author of Dogtown: Death and Enchantment in a New England Ghost Town, will discuss Hartley’s sixteen-year relationship with Cape Ann and how it changed his life and work. $10 Museum members; $15 nonmembers. Reservations are required; to make a reservation please call (978)283-0455 x16 or email info@capeannmuseum.orgDogtown Lecture series generously sponsored by Cape Ann Savings Bank.

A Big Thank You and a Few (Brief) Thoughts on Art

Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal on Kickstarter. The project we funded through Kickstarter is called the Art Exchange and it begins TONIGHT at 6 o’clock on White Wharf in Rockport. The response to the Art Exchange has already been interesting, and it has yet to take place. Usually when people hear about the idea behind the Art Exchange, they say something like “What a great idea!” followed by “I really want to be a part of this!” followed by “But what-if-what-I-bring-is-worth-more-than-what-someone-else-brings?” or “But what-if-what-I-bring-is-not-as-good-as-what-other-people-bring?” followed by, “I’ll just wait and see this year and maybe participate if you do it again.”

What if you could trade this…
…for this?
Then you would be one lucky dog.

This is the thing: the Art Exchange is an experiment for all of us. At times we allow our experience of art to become an overly-mediated one, or we allow the market to dictate our response to what we see.  The point of the Art Exchange is to make the art market a more immediate, interactive experience. Things may get interesting, or they may stay boring. You may find the experience to be less than satisfying, or it may be the best night of your life. The thing is, I don’t know. And neither do you. So in between gallery openings and the block party, come down to Rockport’s Art Exchange. Eat a hot dog, listen to some tunes, and if you really like a piece of art you see there, try to trade for it. If not, you’ll have had a few hours on one of Rockport’s beautiful wharves on a nice summer evening. So things could be worse. Hope to see you there, and thanks again for your support!

Go to www.artnowrockport.com for more information.
