Cape Ann Artisans at 30
I stopped in the museum the other day, having heard great things about the art on display. I was not let down!

In conjunction with the Cape Artisans at 30 Exhibit, the Museum is hosting a series of demonstration days. Members of the Artisans will demonstrate their various crafts throughout each scheduled day. This program is free with Museum admission.

Origami Rabbits
Six different origami rabbit designs I folded last night! Starting from the top center and going counter-clockwise, they are designed by Jacky Chan, Jun Maekawa, John Montroll, Robert Lang, Akira Yoshizawa, and… I’m not sure about the last one in the top right. I might some slight modifications to a very common origami rabbit design.

Rebecca Siswick’s art at Island Art and Hobby
Rebecca Siswick Graham is the Artist-of-the-Month at Island Art & Hobby! Her current collection of artwork in acrylic, encaustic, and mixed media will be on display now through March 31st. They held a reception on March 15, and was well frequented.
Her work, inspired in biology, uses an interesting variety of techniques and media.

Three Sheets to the Wind opened for Gordon Bok at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse
…and I got some photos!
The concert was almost two weeks ago, but I’ve been too busy to get the photos ready until now… I have wanted to see Gordon Bok in concert since I was a child, so it was great to finally have the chance! And “Three Sheets to the Wind” are a great group to hear and to sing with. It was a wonderful evening of music!

Black Fire above White Fire
The lecture “Torah: Black Fire over White Fire” was given by Rabbi Salazar at Temple Ahavat Achim last Tuesday. Rabbi Salazar is the scribe who is writing the new Torah scroll to replace the one lost in the fire that destroyed the previous temple building. The talk was fascinating!
Before the lecture, Rabbi Salazar was had the Torah-in-progress spread out on the table.
Rabbi Steven Lewis gave an introduction:
Rabbi Salazar spoke off the cuff with erudition and fervor, but very clearly and accessibly, even for folks like me who don’t know much about Jewish theology. Christians and Jews have a lot in common in some ways – judging from this lecture, at least some schools of Jewish thought have more in common with Christian mysticism than I expected – but there are also very significant differences, of course. Christianity had its origin in Judaism two thousand years ago, and a lot has happened historically, philosophically, and theologically in the interim!

Fisk open house last week
A week ago, C. B. Fisk had an open house and demo of an organ they recently finished and are shipping off to it’s destination in Japan.
The open house was well frequented, with lots of local people coming and going, munching on the tasty tidbits that were being offered and taking tours of the facility. Organ students and other people from the organ’s destination in Japan were on site as well, some playing the organ and others strolling through the workshop. I planned on getting lots of photos, but ended up in several engrossing conversations instead… I got a few more photos of the workshop last year when I got a fascinating tour from my friend Rick Isaacs. I continue to be amazed by the versatility and skill of the artisans at Fisk!

“Olivia’s by the Sea” is under new management, renovated, and almost ready to roll
“Olivia’s by the Sea”, formerly “Amelia’s” (near Good Harbor Beach), is under new management! It has been taken over by the same people who run the new Cape Ann Diner in Brown’s Mall. It has been renovated, and work will continue until the summer. The new layout includes an informal, tray-serving-style dining area, designed to be comfortable for beach-goers:
and a smaller, more formal area where there will be waiter service and a more comprehensive menu.
Outside, the plan is to have an ice cream window on one side of the outdoor eating area. In short, something for everyone!
On Wednesday, the restaurant opened for a breakfast test run “on the house” so that a small number of people could try the food and meet the staff. I was invited, so I showed up for a late breakfast. The menu has a wide selection of scrumptious sounding breakfast food, with reasonable prices (although not as inexpensive as the Cape Ann Diner, which is to be expected for the location and style). I opted for a scrambled egg with bacon, home fries, and beans, with a mug of decaf coffee.
It was delicious! And the owner, Ron, and the greeters and servers were friendly and cheerful.
They will be opening fully for business sometime next month. I look forward to it!

Don’t forget – Origami Class coming up at The Hive, for Easter / Passover!
I’ll be teaching an origami class at The Hive (on Pleasant Street) on March 14 at 7PM!
The theme this time will be Easter and Passover. Models on our menu to fold include:
- The traditional origami lily. Easter Lilies are a standard for decorating churches. On one hand, the white color represents purity and joy. More importantly, the lily bursts forth and blooms from a bulb which lies buried and hidden in the earth, like Christ who lay in the tomb and rose in glory from under the earth. This model also introduces origami novices to a standard of the traditional origami repertoire, with its characteristics of elegance and simplification.
- An Easter bunny/basket (designed by a Korean named Jacky Chan – not the martial arts action movie star!). Not as directly related to the religious significance of Easter, this model combines a container (maybe for chocolate Easter eggs?) with a rabbit for something that looks kind of like a bunny-shaped slipper. Cute and functional!
- A lamb. The lamb is a central part of the Passover meal, as well as a symbol of Christ for Christians. This origami design also introduces the origami novice to the use of non-square paper (it is folded from a 2×1 rectangle).
I will have a few more options available to chose from, for both Easter and Passover themes. That will include a cross (for Christ’s death and resurrection), frogs (one of the plagues leading up to the Passover), a Torah scroll (which contains the account of the Passover), etc. Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to fold and photograph examples of each for this post, but you get the idea.

“Flash Mob” for the Grace Center
WHO: All members of the Cape Ann Community wishing to support Grace Center, Inc.
WHEN: Saturday, March 23 – Registration between 6:00-7:00 p.m. March begins at 7:15 p.m.
WHERE: Meet at Gloucester High School to join others as we march to Stacey Boulevard and then return to Gloucester High School.
WHY: To raise visibility and awareness for the Grace Center, a day resource center to help those in crisis.
