Kingston Trio Tribute planned for Oct. 3 at One World Coffee House

kingstonFrom the Beacon

Essex-

The One World Coffee House will salute the magical folk revival group The Kingston Trio on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.

The celebration will include the songs “Tom Dooley,” “This Land is Your Land,” “Greenback Dollar,” “Where Have all the Flowers Gone,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Scotch and Soda,” “MTA” and a score of others. This will be an evening of remembrance and joy as the musicians perform individually and collectively in a revue of the songs that launched the folk music revival in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Scheduled performers include Daisy Nell & Capt. Stan and the Crabgrass Band, Travelers Three, Russ Sollitto, Allyn Hawes, Tamarac, Sid Tracey and others.

Be part of the celebration and sing along on this exciting evening with all the songs from the “old days.” If you have any old Kingston Trio records, or memorabilia, bring them along and share the covers and memories.

This performance is a fundraiser for the One World Coffee House, with all donations to the Coffee House Fund. Requested donation is $15. Reservations, strongly recommended, can be made by calling 978-325-3252.

Coming to the Coffee House on Oct. 24: Favorite David Mallet.

The One World Coffee House is located at the First Universalist Church, 59 Main St., Essex.

Where Zat? Winner!

9-28-09 fullNow you know!

But first you have to read this very descriptive, funny (but very wrong) answer from paultmorrison-

“A granite pier with a high tide line then3 feet of freshly laid granite block above granite bricbrack with a nice colorful mural with a tail fin of a humpback or is it Thatcher Island and light streaming out of one of the lighthouses?

That must be sunrise just to the right of the light house so it has to be Thatcher painted from Good Harbor Beach or more east.

Or Ten Pound lighthouse and it’s sunset. Everyone thinks only sunsets are orange so I go with Ten Pound Island Light.

I will take a guess at the wall of the aquarium down at the Maritime Museum.”

Here’s this week’s winner-

Kay Ellis of the Lannon!

“It’s down the fort. Looking at the corner of the mural. We go by it every day on the Lannon!”

Congratulations, Kay! Come down to Joey’s dock at the end of the week and claim your prize!

Jay- You really didn’t know? You’re the one who pointed it out to me !!  —Sharon

Back by globular demand! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Lisa Marie! That’s right, folx, no tickee, no laundree, so get your butt down here Thursday and shake your booties to the booty bleat.
I don’t have to tell you about her smood singin’, her brash blaring, her total control of da megaphonium of de blooze. Plays a mean tambourine, too, or three. It’s gwine be a party to end all parties!
Backing her up  will be long-time missing saxaphonier and general cooldude, Mr. Rick Razdan. We haven’t had the pleasure in a long time as he has been recovering from botched weenis cosmetic surgery. However, we now got the green light! Greg T. will be there, too as well as myself.
So,  put down that knitting and grab your walker and c’mon down…if you still got the strength…

What will you be doing on this rainy Sunday?

Well, it’s supposed to rain all day. I’ve got a million things to do in the house, so being forced inside will make me be more productive. There are 2 rooms that definitely need a pick-up- and- sort and another that needs a bulldozer. So that’s what I’ll be tackling today. But I’ll put on some good music and stay in my jammies, and maybe later I’ll make chili. Actually looking forward to a stay-in day! How about you? What’re your rainy day plans?

Thanks, Jay, for the great Block Party photos!

I love these photos that Jay Albert took Saturday night.
From Jay’s blog Cape Ann Images
Another succesful Gloucester Downtown Block Party, the last in this years series that has promoted the shopping, entertainment and places to dine the downtown has to offer. It’s also becoming the place to meet, something lost when the era of out of town mall shopping became popular.”

DSC_6591 [640x480]This week’s Where Zat? is a little off the beaten path. Depends which path you travel;).  If you haven’t won at Where Zat? in the past, here’s your chance to SHINE!

Good luck! And thanks for playing!

Hoola Hoopla a Huge Success!

What fun last night! The Hoola Hoopla was a huge success! I never imagined that so many kids (and adults) would want to try their hand at hooping! We had tiny tots trying to spin their hoops, and of course the bigger kids who love to outdo their friends.

Jennifer Goulart Amero from Metamorphosis Fitness brought hoops from her studio on Main St. She hooped all night and taught the kids some tricks and moves.

A wonderful woman (I ‘ve forgotten her name) who teaches at Brookwood, brought handmade hoops to share.

It truly was a community effort. And again I’d like to thank the following people for their help and support:

Rich at Iron Rail Gymnastics Academy

Toni at Tara Montessori

Jen at Metamorphosis Fitness

Carmine at Friendly’s Restaurant

Jerry at West End Sweets

The Brookwood teacher

Kylie (my granddaughter)

Joey and the GMG Gang

and all the kids and adults who made last night so much fun!

Watch for photos from Jay Albert, the Gloucester Daily Times, David Cox, and if you have photos from last night’s Block Party, email them to me at sharon_lowe88@yahoo.com

Tonight’s Hoola Hoopla

hula hoop

Tonight’s the night for the Hoola Hoopla at the Block Party! The fun will start at 6 with the little kids and wind up at 8:30 when the adults finish! Bring your hoops and your hips and show Gloucester what you got!

A huge thank you goes out to Toni at Tara Montessori, Rich at Iron Rail Gymnastics, and Jen at Metamorphosis Fitness for lending us hoops. And to Carmine at Friendly’s for donating the prizes. Real community spirit!

Glosta on shirt 2 copy

I will have the GLOSTA -phobic T-shirts with me for $15 each. Sizes L and XL.

Come join the fun at the corner of Main and Center St.!

See, Joey? It wasn’t my fault!

Arrrgh, is it any coincidence that the last block party is “Talk Like a Pirate Day”?
