Chocolate Chip Cookies At Madfish Wharf
Gloucester, MA and Gloucester, England
Had a very interesting visit Sunday at the gallery from Lisa Hogan, originally from Gloucester, MA and Andrew Garfield from Gloucester, England. The couple were married in February 2000 in Rockport at the Old Sloop Congregational Church, where Lisa’s mother and grandmother had also been married. That in and of itself I found interesting, but the more we talked, the more interesting they became. The couple now lives in Rockport in the winter and summers in Gloucester on their boat which they keep at Cape Ann Marina.
Andrew and Lisa co-founded a company called Glevum Associates LLC. Glevum was a Roman fort in Roman Britain that became a “colonia” of retired legionaries in AD 97. Today it is known as Gloucester, located in the English county of Gloucestershire. Glevum Associates LLC a company that specializes in conducting face-to-face research and analysis in conflict and post conflict societies. Since its inception, Glevum has supported numerous U.S. Government and military clients – including the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Army, and more recently the Department of State – providing actionable and vital political, security and quality of life information on local populations including in Iraq (550,000 interviews to date) and Afghanistan (250,000 interviews to date).
From 2005 to 2012, Andrew has taught two modules on “Winning the War of Ideas” and “Exploitation of the Human Terrain” to the commanders and staffs of almost every Army and National Guard brigade, division and corps that has deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan since 2005, as well as multiple supporting formations and specialist units.
Andrew has recently completed a fascinating paper based on in-depth interviews with 78 active Taliban insurgents, living and operating in many of Afghanistan’s most volatile provinces, titled “Understanding Afghan Insurgents: Motivations, Goals and the Reconcilation and Reintegration Process. Who Are They? What Do They Want? Why do They Fight?” https://www.fpri.org/docs/Understanding_Afghan_Insurgents_Garfield_and_Boyd.pdf
You meet the most interesting people on Rocky Neck.
PS Joey – I don’t have any GMG stickas left, so they had to hold up my Deviled Egg Competition ribbon! Don’t let me forget to get some more when I come by the dock.

And the Winner is . . .
There was intense competition this morning at the GMG Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition Mug Up. Five excellent entries were received, which were blind tasted and judged by the attendees. The runaway winning chocolate chip cookie was submitted by Alexandra’s Bread of Gloucester. The 2nd place chocolate chip cookie was lovingly baked by Sue McDermott of Magnolia. Paul Morrison was awarded Best in Show for the most artistic and creative cookies baked in the shape of a duck, set onto a boat of vanilla ice cream and surrounded by waves of whipped cream. I didn’t get a shot of a completed presentation of Paul’s creation, so if anyone did, please send it in or upload it. Other entries were submitted by Alicia Cox from Mamie’s Kitchen and a 2nd entry was submitted by Alexandra’s Bread
In my book, although all the cookies were excellent and I had a hard time picking the best one, my absolute favorite contribution to the morning was Al Bezanson’s schooner fare of crispy fried Spam and pineapple chunks. It was just incredible. I haven’t had Spam in probably 50 years, and have never it served like that. True genious. If I’m ever stranded on a deserted island, all I want is cans of Spam and pineapple chunks (and of course a can opener – it would be a total drag if I didn’t have a can opener).
Thanks to Donna & Rick Ardizonni for the fruit salad and whipped cream, Kathy Chapman for the fruit salad with yogurt, Gigi Mederos for making the coffee and bringing cookies, Alma McLaughlin for hosting in her beautiful back patio area and providing the doughnuts from Jim’s Bagel & Bake Shop, and all the others who brought contributions but I didn’t see who brought what, although I think Giclee James brought the blueberry muffins.
Another great Mug Up.

Celebrating Attitude and Humor on the Neck
Sue Handman, who calls her photo and quote combinations “fabric novellas” is the maker of those fabulously sassy collage textile pieces that mix vintage -inspired fabrics, photographs transferred onto cloth and favorite quotes of hers that would have so delighted Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain. Each statement garment is flattering, easy to wear and certain to be a conversation piece – refreshingly direct and funny.
Until this season, the vintage bohemian clothing and accessory pieces in Sue’s collection could only be found in the festival circuit. Sue Handman is quite a favorite in Massachusetts shows like the Oyster Fest in Wellfleet, Marshfield Art Festival and Marblehead Festival of Arts, as well as many other fairs and festivals along the Eastern US and as far down as Key West. Sue also exhibits in Trade-shows; but she has found a perfect fit in Vintage shows like the Country Living Fair that took place this past June in Rhinebeck, NY and will take place in Atlanta, GA in October. In Florida Sue Handman Fabric Collage pops-up at the Big Bang Bazaar in Maitland and the Fancy Flea in Lakeland and at the famous Antique Market right here in Brimfield, MA.
Come meet the talented fabric collage artist Sue Handman in her gorgeous little gallery in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony. At Sue Handman Fabric Collage you will also find Beach Rock Jewelry by Kem Designs and selected paintings by Tracey Martin Logan. Sue Handman will be in her Rocky Neck Gallery until Columbus Day weekend.

Who Remembers Itchy Bones?
or Mopey Joe, or Joe Gorilla, or Billy Ape, or Joe Curley, or Joe Flattop, or Satchmo, or Harpo, or Charlie Skunk or Sleepie?
These are just a few of the nicknames of some Italian Gloucester men.
Do you know why Italian men have such unique nicknames? I didn’t until Joseph de Lina Novella “Joe Curley” stopped into the gallery and explained it to me. When the first male child is born in an Italian family, he is named after the father’s father (his grandfather). If a girl, she is named after the mother’s mother (her grandmother). The second born is named after the mother’s father, or mother if a girl. The 3rd is named again after the father’s father, or mother. The 4th after the mother’s father, or mother, and on and on for as many children as come into the family. If a large family, say with 6 boys, you would have 3 sons named Joseph (if that was their grandfather’s name) and as many as 6, if the mother’s father’s name was also Joseph. Hence the need for creative nicknames to be able to identify which one you were talking about, referring to or calling.
Thanks Joe, nice to meet you and interesting bit of information.
