Spring Household Hazardous Waste Day – April 14, 2018
This year our Spring Household Hazardous Waste Event will be April 14, 2018, rain or shine, from 9am-12 noon. Residents are asked to schedule an appointment to bring their materials to the DPW yard. The Recycling Department will begin accepting appointments beginning March 15th. Please call 978-281-9785 to schedule your appointment. Registration closes April 13, 2018 at 11 AM.
Gloucester residents are allowed to bring up to 25 pound or gallons of material at no cost. If you exceed 25 pounds or gallons, and additional fee will be accessed and payable to ACV Enviro(payable by check only, cash is not accepted). For up to 10 gallons or pounds over it is $30, 11-25 gallons or pounds over the charge is $50.00.
Please understand that we can only accept hazardous materials when ACV Enviro is on site, early drop offs will not be allowed.

- Pack your car and drive directly to the site.

The Fisk Connection
‘THE FISK CONNECTION,’ A PROGRESSIVE ORGAN CONCERT ON SATURDAY EVENING, APRIL 14, 2018
EVENT DESCRIPTION: The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation hosts a performance by six local organists on Saturday, April 14th at 7:30 p.m., the first half in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church at the corner of Middle and Church Street and the second half next door in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Doors open at 7:00pm; come early for the best seats.
The performers are Kathleen Adams, Frances Conover Fitch, Carl Klein, Michael Kraft, Mark Nelson, and Robert Wech. Each one is connected to the work of the late Charles B. Fisk, whose firm located in Magnolia is world-renowned for superb pipe organs in churches, universities and concert halls. The concert will be narrated by Charles Nazarian describing the connection of the players to Fisk, history of the two remarkable instruments, and information about how the pipe organ sounds.
WHAT TO EXPECT: In the mode of a progressive recital last year by virtuoso organist Joonho Park, the first half will be performed in the Meetinghouse, home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, on the 1893 Hutchings pipe organ, restored by Gloucester organ builder Charles Fisk in 1962.
At the intermission, the audience will stroll next door for the second half of the concert in St. John’s Episcopal Church on the 1989 Fisk pipe-organ, the firm’s Opus 97. WHAT’S SPECIAL? This concert is a rare opportunity for Cape Ann residents to hear two pipe organs of historic significance and contrasting characters back to back, performed by organists with individual connections to Gloucester and the work of Charles Fisk. The Meetinghouse organ was built by George Hutchings, builder of the organ in Boston’s Symphony Hall, and restored in Gloucester by Fisk in 1962. The innovative St. John’s organ is the only new Fisk instrument commissioned on Cape Ann, the firm’s Opus 97 completed in 1989. Although products of different eras in organ building, both instruments feature mechanical (tracker) key action, a wide tonal palette for the performance of many eras of organ music, and exquisite craftsmanship.

WHERE: The concert will begin in the historic 1806 Gloucester Meetinghouse (home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church), corner of Church & Middle Street with parking on the green. Persons needing an elevator may enter from the 10 Church Street side entrance. The second half of the concert will be performed next door at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Additional parking is available in the St. John’s Church lot.

General Description:
PLEASE READ JOB DESCRIPTION THOROUGHLY BEFORE APPLYING. Responsible for timely, safe, and accurate delivery of packaged ice. The work you will be performing, if employed, is often hard, physical labor, and consisting of handling, delivering, and loading freezers with mostly 35 lbs (and up to 40 lbs) bags of ice. The job entails regular lifting, pushing and pulling, for which physical fitness, flexibility, strength, coordination and agility are all essential requirements.
Basic Requirements/Working Conditions:
+Exposed to wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.
+Frequently climb in/out of truck, 30-40 times per day.
+Ability to frequently lift 35 lbs and 40 lbs bags of ice.
+Ability to operate two-wheeler dolly, typically loaded to 300 lbs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
+Safely and responsibly operate 18ft box truck, occasionally up to 26ft box truck.
+Preview route prior to departure and discuss with supervisor if necessary.
+Incorporate incoming deliveries into route throughout the day.
+Communicate with office/supervisor about route progress.
+Check all equipment (handheld, printers, dollies, etc.) prior to departure.
+Pre- and post-trip vehicle check.
+Report any mechanical issues to supervisor.
+Deliver ice to stores:
-Safely park vehicle.
-Check merchandiser for damage, mechanical faults.
-Check with store manager for receiving procedure.
-Unload ice from truck, transport using two-wheeler dolly, load freezer.
-Get signature from store manager, service invoice, collect payment if necessary.
-Discuss any delivery problems with store manager and report to supervisor.
-Maintain customer relationships with store managers, clerks, etc.
+Pick up and deliver ice merchandisers.
+Unload and clean truck at end of day.
+Turn in paperwork and plug in tablet/printer at end of day.
+Supervise driver helper, if applicable.
Experience:
+Commercial driving experience a plus, but not necessary.
+Pass the physical fitness requirements of DOT physical exam.
Other Requirements:
+Must be available for weekends/holidays as required/negotiated.
+Cell phone required.
+Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
+Must be at least 18 years of age.

This first Hearing Mission event introduces the human hearing system, how to protect good hearing, and the restorative benefits of aural rehabilitation. Attend this event to learn about the human hearing system, your brain, and how you can keep your brain sharper through better hearing. There will be door prizes and gifts too! We will answer your questions about hearing aids and explain the role of aural rehabilitation and brain fitness in hearing health. Beauport Hearing Care takes a more holistic approach. Good nutrition and exercise matter. Better hearing is not just about hearing aids! In addition, hearing screenings will also be offered at the program. And free hearing tests with personalized heari…ng coaching will be scheduled for those that request it.
Mission participants that need hearing aids but cannot afford them may apply for free hearing aids through the Beauport Hearing Mission in partnership with the Starkey Hearing Foundation. But whether or not you qualify for free, all participants are introduced to a new way of thinking about their hearing and health.
Hearing and healing are central to every spiritual and religious tradition! The vast majority of traditions are oral traditions, e.g. they have no written language. ‘Hearing’ God’s Word is universal to all traditions. Moreover, science is discovering that hearing is the primary sense to help the brain organize and prioritize all sensory inputs. The beautiful human hearing system bridges our physical and spiritual worlds. Healthy hearing promotes measurably better social and physical health. Socialization is important to maintain good brain health, and hearing is essential to socialization. Hearing is also necessary to understand the advice of your doctor.
The Beauport Hearing Mission demonstrates one way St. John’s Community Health Ministry enables better health. Like healthy hearing, other health problems like diabetes also require a more holistic and social intervention to be most effective. We need your help! Come see how the Hearing Mission is leading. Consider volunteering for St. John’s Community Health Ministry by becoming a St. John’s ‘hearing coordinator’.
