Vessel Will Careen Down the Ways and Hit the Essex River Basin with a Splash
Laurie Fullerton writes-
On Saturday, July 9 between 6 and 7 p.m. a historic Essex side launch of a 50-foot double sawn frame, two-masted, wooden schooner will take place at the Burnham Boatyard in Essex, MA. Ardelle was built by Harold Burnham, 44, of Essex who is an eleventh generation Master Shipwright. He will launch the vessel using the Essex side launch – where the massive schooner is literally leaned on its side and sent careening into the river basin.
Burnham is part of a shipbuilding legacy that dates back to the first settlers of Essex in the 1600s. With Essex’s long history as a shipbuilding town, where generations of shipwrights built vessels on the banks of the Essex River using the unique Essex side launch technique over three centuries.."Essex shipwrights always used the simplest method they could to get the finished boat out of the way of the one they were about to start," said Burnham "The most popular method in Essex was called a side launch. Side launches were carried out by just leaning the vessels over onto a single way and skating them into the water on their own keel and one bilge."
"Of course, in today’s world the idea of sending a hundred tons of oak sliding on one side over smoking grease sounds dangerous, but that is only because we don’t do it much anymore. Just imagine the looks you would get from a 19th-century shipbuilder if you tried to explain to him what it is like to pass a car on an undivided highway. The truth is that of the approximately 3,300 vessels launched in Essex, we know of none that was seriously damaged in a launching accident. Further, there is no record of anyone being seriously hurt or killed at one of our launchings, either.

Top Pick For Saturday- VIEW THE LAUNCH OF THE SCHOONER ARDELLE FROM THE ESSEX SHIPBUILDING MUSEUM
SATURDAY, JULY 9 STARTING AT 3:00 PM
Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s Shipyard on Saturday, July 9, 2011 to view the launching of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle that is being built by Harold A. Burnham, an eleventh generation Essex shipwright. On Labor Day 2010 we celebrated the signing of her keel and the raising of her first frames. It was an exciting day and all who attended had a great time. Harold is now ready to launch the Schooner Ardelle and we will be there to celebrate.
It’s not often that wooden schooners are launched anywhere in this country, and we are fortunate to have in Essex a craftsman who knows how to build a wooden schooner the same way they were built centuries ago. Harold Burnham and a band of volunteers have spent the last 10 months building this vessel. They’ve been outside in snow storms, rain, and blistering heat. On Saturday, July 9th between 6 – 7 pm she will finally hit the water using the time honored, and exciting, Essex side launch. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one of the best places to view a launch from the H.A. Burnham Boatbuilding yard, and we plan on celebrating. Starting at 3 pm we will have live music from Michael Forney’s Bluegrass Band, Daisy Nell and Captain Stan and the second graders from Essex Elementary will perform songs from “The Stowaway Mouse”, hot dogs and Italian sausages from Kayem, chowder from Woodman’s of Essex , and all kinds of beverages. So, mark your calendars and join us!

Has This Ever Happened To You?
4:45AM and I pull in to a local convenience store to get a little sustenance before the work day begins.
There are a total of three people in the convenience store- a guy out in the back corner of the place glued to the keno screen, the clerk that works there and me.
So I find this peanut energy bar in the middle of the store about 7 paces away from the counter. That’s all I needed, just a little something to take the hunger edge off before work started a single energy bar.
I begin to walk toward the counter to pay for my one item, the energy bar and KENO GUY is about 15 paces away. He literally sprints to get to the counter before me and then proceeds to rattle off $150 worth of different lottery bets taking about 5 minutes to get them all in.
Really?????
Courtesy is not at the top of this degenerates list. My 99 cent single item purchase was obviously not nearly as important as him getting his degenerate gambling tickets.
ARGGGGH!
This is for you dude-

Mark Your Calendars- First Downtown Gloucester Block Party Slated For Next Saturday July 16th
The Gloucester Downtown Block Party, a citywide food, family and arts event occurring three times throughout the summer in the oceanside community of Gloucester, on Cape Ann celebrates its fourth year with a new spin in the fashion of that other hipster seaside community – Portsmouth, NH.
Valerie Marcley, co-founder and coordinator of the tremendously successful Seaport Fringe Festival in Portsmouth has come on board as Event Coordinator of the Gloucester Downtown Block Party series, which has drawn thousands at each event, organized and powered historically through volunteer efforts alone. Valerie brings a fresh perspective and some new ideas to help broaden the already successful community event to attract and entertain festival goers of all ages.
New this year is the introduction of street minstrels to entertain seated diners when entertainment on the main stage is too far from your al fresco table, a large family zone with more inexpensive and free youth activities such as sidewalk chalk drawing, face painting, games and interactive theater, picnic tables, street food options for those not wishing to wait for a table on “restaurant row”, an Art Street area with works on display and adult street artists, an event-wide 50/50 raffle, and the inclusion of off-Main Street Vendors in the areas not filled by downtown retailers.
Stages at Hancock and Main, and Porter and Main will once again have people “dancing in the streets” with live music, dance performances and lessons, spectacle, comedy, and even a parade down to a waterfront dance party. As always, and perhaps even more this year, Main Street will be full of arts and music, friends and food for participants of all ages to get out and have fun.
The change in organization comes with the retirement and relocation of two of Gloucester Downtown Block Party founders, Janice Shea and Erika Hansen. Their departure from the wonderful summer series has resulted in a new set of local volunteers coming forward, under their invaluable guidance, to sustain and grow this local calendar highlight.
Lorre Anderson of the Black Swan, Mark McDonough of Serenitee Restaurant Group, and founder of Farmer’s Market and Cape Ann Time banks, Judith Brackley, accomplished writer, Jennifer Goulart Amero, Public Relations and Marketing Director for Serenitee Restaurants and Lucinda Seigel join Linn Parisi, destination marketing guru for Cape Ann and event visionary Janice Lufkin to lead events subcommittees including local artists and entertainers like Dawn Gadow of Art Haven, Peter and Vicki Van Ness of GimmeSound and Henry Allen of The Annie.
Festival dates are Saturday July 16, August 20 and September 17, 2011. Information on performing or volunteering at the Gloucester Block Parties through Val at glostablockpahty@gmail.com
