The Riverdale Rockets continue their online signups for the upcoming 2011 Football/Cheering season! Log onto www.Riverdalerockets.com to sign up! Takes just a couple of minutes. Registration is $80 per player with a $140 family cap. Ages 6-14 (no high school students) are able to participate. Must be 6 by August 31st! Practices begin August 15th! 7th Wave Restaurant Review From A Completely Impartial Kim Smith
Sunday night my husband and I tried a new restaurant (new for us, that is), the 7th Wave in Rockport on Tuna Wharf. Our son Alex is cooking there this summer. The hostess was lovely and Talia, one of the owners, greeted us at the front desk. We had made a reservation for 7:00 and were seated immediately on the upper deck, with the stunning view of Rockport Harbor and beyond.
The atmosphere is lively, relaxed, and entirely kid-and family-friendly. The waitstaff was hardworking and alot of fun and our food came along very quickly, no waiting for anything, despite the fact that it was a full house.
Our son was working the grill, so we restricted ourselves to grilled items only. I had the surf (super delicious grilled shrimp) and turf (petite filet, cooked to perfection) and Tom, the fantastic grilled tuna. I am usually more of a chowder and lobster person and can’t wait to go again and try more items on the menu. The lobster rolls and lobster salads passing by our table were heaped high with lobster meat and the chowder looked creamy and hearty. Elaine, mother of Talia, and owner, stopped by our table to say hello and to chat. It’s a family-owned business and the restaurant is named the 7th Wave because of their seven family members. The Kahn family opened their doors in June 2009 and they had their busiest night ever, the Saturday night before we ate dinner there. It was great to hear about their thriving business and we are looking forward to many return visits! Come downtown for the summer’s best party! Main Street will be closed for entertainment, al fresco dining, art, dancing, vendors and a childrens’ game area. THIS IS YOUR PARTY! It starts at 6 pm and it’s FREE!
Dance to Livin’ on Luck, Willie Alexander, Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester, Alek Razden and the Polygroove Orchestra and be dazzled by the Bones and Roses Circus Sideshow, the Cape Ann Center for Dance. Street performers will stroll Main and entertain: Go Jay Go, Yo Joe Magic Show, Roger Hussey, Giant Puppets interactive for the kids and 50/50 raffle! Shows start at 6 pm.
The series celebrates Gloucester the third Saturday of each month, July through September.

(Hint: it involves several cans of brightly colored paint.) The girls, along with Troop Leader Diane Wolff-Thomas and fellow Scouts Emily Moore and Jessi Silva, are learning about gardening firsthand with their own garden plot.

Duality is a theme that repeatedly makes its way into my work. Having spent my childhood in Taiwan, I am strongly influenced by my dual Chinese and Japanese heritage. Coming to America, I found my deeply held beliefs being constantly re-evaluated, challenged, and sometimes compromised. My work is a medium for me to revisit and gain new understanding from my immigration experience. My creativity is fueled by direct observation. My work is driven by the fascination with perceptual and visual experience of light and space. I am constantly seeking new ways to create an illusionistic space through an exploration of of lines, shapes, color and through the visceral act of painting, scraping and collaging materials. I draw upon images of the people, objects, and places that I observe and identify with on a personal level. These images and ideas are given substance and transformed through my painting and printmaking practices. I’ve received a BFA in Painting from University of Washington and MFA Painting degree from Boston University.

Contemporary realist painter Claudia Kaufman’s "Simply Looking: Looking Simple," the third in the Rocky Neck Gallery Summer Artist Series, opens Wednesday, July 6 and runs until Tuesday, July 19. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, July 9, from 5-8 p.m. Kaufman will give a talk at about 7pm where she will show slides that show the steps involved in creating an acurately realistic painting. The public is invited.
Kaufman lives in Marblehead and is a member of the North Shore, Rockport, and Marblehead Art Associations and the Copley Society of Art. Her work has been shown in many Boston area exhibitions. She worked as a commercial artist in New York City followed by a career as marketing executive/creative director of a national healthcare technology company.
She studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston, Mass College of Art and most recently completed a post baccalaureate residency program in painting at Brandeis University.
As a contemporary realist painter, my works are studies in observation — still lifes of familiar objects that are deceptively simple, yet complex. In the studio setting, I challenge myself to translate the perceived three-dimensional world to a 2D field by observing and capturing the conditions of light, form, color and space through the painterly properties of oil paint. Stopping short of photo-realism, I work to keep the signs of my hand and brushstroke in my work and am particularly intrigued by the drama of light, transparency, reflection and shadows.

The next guest artist at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery will be painter and stylist, Laureen Maher. Laureen, who lives in East Gloucester and owns and operates the Beauty Bar at 12 Parker Street in Gloucester, will be exhibiting her landscapes, florals and portraits of local rock stars series of oil paintings in a show entitled "Brushworks". Her exhibit runs from July 8-22nd with an Opening Reception on Sunday, July 10th from 6:00 to 9:00pm. Laureen was first inspired to paint 9 years ago after she moved to East Gloucester from Melrose and saw the collection of paintings by Robert Gruppe’ at The Studio. She is working on an ongoing series of paintings of the local rock stars of Cape Ann. Laureen is very excited to be exhibiting on Rocky Neck, as this is where she was first inspired to paint. Green Golly and the Treasure of Light At The Sawyer Free Library Tomorrow
Barbara Siesel and Keith Torgan are in town to do a free children’s concert at the Sawyer Free Library tomorrow at 11am! He is a children’s singer songwriter who plays guitar and she is a world-class flautist. Their program has won The Parents’ Choice Award and they have found a way to introduce kids (ages 4-8 or so) to classical music and make them fall in love with it. Kids needed to create art for Burnham’s Field garden
This Friday, Art Haven and the new Burnham’s Field Community Garden are teaming up to invite kids to paint a beautiful mural and vegetable “sculptures” to decorate the garden. The art workshop is free and open to children of all ages.
Burnham’s Field is the largest green space in central Gloucester. Many, many people will be able to enjoy the public art being created by these Gloucester kids.
The workshop will take place this Friday, July 15, from 4 to 5:30 at Art Haven, 180B Main Street in Gloucester. Kids must be accompanied by a parent.

The Gloucester Downtown Block Party, a citywide food, family and arts event occurring three times throughout the summer in the oceanside community of Gloucester, on Cape Ann celebrates its fourth year with a new spin in the fashion of that other hipster seaside community – Portsmouth, NH.
Valerie Marcley, co-founder and coordinator of the tremendously successful Seaport Fringe Festival in Portsmouth has come on board as Event Coordinator of the Gloucester Downtown Block Party series, which has drawn thousands at each event, organized and powered historically through volunteer efforts alone. Valerie brings a fresh perspective and some new ideas to help broaden the already successful community event to attract and entertain festival goers of all ages.
New this year is the introduction of street minstrels to entertain seated diners when entertainment on the main stage is too far from your al fresco table, a large family zone with more inexpensive and free youth activities such as sidewalk chalk drawing, face painting, games and interactive theater, picnic tables, street food options for those not wishing to wait for a table on “restaurant row”, an Art Street area with works on display and adult street artists, an event-wide 50/50 raffle, and the inclusion of off-Main Street Vendors in the areas not filled by downtown retailers.
Stages at Hancock and Main, and Porter and Main will once again have people “dancing in the streets” with live music, dance performances and lessons, spectacle, comedy, and even a parade down to a waterfront dance party. As always, and perhaps even more this year, Main Street will be full of arts and music, friends and food for participants of all ages to get out and have fun.
The change in organization comes with the retirement and relocation of two of Gloucester Downtown Block Party founders, Janice Shea and Erika Hansen. Their departure from the wonderful summer series has resulted in a new set of local volunteers coming forward, under their invaluable guidance, to sustain and grow this local calendar highlight.
Lorre Anderson of the Black Swan, Mark McDonough of Serenitee Restaurant Group, and founder of Farmer’s Market and Cape Ann Time banks, Judith Brackley, accomplished writer, Jennifer Goulart Amero, Public Relations and Marketing Director for Serenitee Restaurants and Lucinda Seigel join Linn Parisi, destination marketing guru for Cape Ann and event visionary Janice Lufkin to lead events subcommittees including local artists and entertainers like Dawn Gadow of Art Haven, Peter and Vicki Van Ness of GimmeSound and Henry Allen of The Annie.

In staying true to New England waters, Steve Johnson of Rendezvous Restaurant in Central Square, Cambridge, courageously puts fish on his menu that — oh no! — has bones.
Mackerel. Grilled to a charry crispness, dripping with olive oil, delicate filets lifting off of 8 inches of spiny vertebrae, mackerel.
In Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, just about anywhere but here, a serving of fish means a pile of bones on the plate. Residents of these countries make beloved meals with sardines, anchovies, pike, mackerel and herring.

Hard Bottom Makes Last Stop In Gloucester
George hardy sold out. Traps, buoys, permit and all to a nice fellow from Marblehead.
Weird seeing Marblehead across her stern but life goes on and at least she will continue lobstering.
This shot was taken just minutes before her final moments in the port of Gloucester after dozens of years in our fair port.

Broken Davit On The Hard Bottom
So George Hardy set out to go lobstering yesterday afternoon and within hauling of the first couple of trawls he busted his davit.
A davit is the boom that hangs out over the boat with a pulley that the line goes through to pull the traps up onto the boat. It hangs out away from the boat so the traps dont gouge the boat on their way up over the rail.
The reason his davit broke was because when he went to haul his traps up from the ocean floor there were four other lobstermen’s trawls set over his. so when he went to lift his trawl up, the entanglement of four other lobstermen’s gear was being lifted at the same time. Apparently it was too much strain for his old wooden davit and it snapped.
This time of year the lobsters are in close to shore so all of the lobster gear is concentrated in a much smaller geographic area. It creates much tension among lobstermen fighting for prime lobster bottom.
The result for George was a davit that snapped in half. Not good.
George Hardy’s Second Broken Davit In Three Days

Here’s half of the broken davit on George Hardy’s boat The Hard Bottom.
George’s davit snapped from the strain of trying to get his lobster gear up from the bottom of the ocean floor while being entangled with the traps of four other fishermen. This is the second davit that has snapped in three days.
When the first one snapped he went and replaced it with a piece of pine (shown below). So he saved himself a few bucks by using the cheap scrap pine, but cost himself two days fishing due to the mechanical failure of the soft knotty pine used as a davit.
Adding to George’s frustrations on this particular day was the fact that his backman overslept so he had to go fishing alone.

7th Annual Race to the Bottom
7th Annual "Race To The Bottom"
Wacky Cardboard Boat Race Fundraiser
This year, the Tryian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge is holding our 7th Annual "Race To The Bottom" Wacky Cardboard Boat Race Fundraiser and would like to extend an invitation to all that are interested in participating. This year’s event will be on Saturday, July 16, 2011, from 11am to 4pm at Back Beach in Rockport, MA. This time frame allows you to build your boat from a prepackaged kit (cardboard, duct tape, etc) and then race it. There is a cost of $100 per team, which is used for scholarship funds and community charity within the Cape Ann Area. Come and enjoy a wacky and fun filled day in the sun and on the water. If your team does not want to, or can not find a captain for your boat, the Rockport Boy Scouts will provide a captain to race your boat for you.
Spectators are welcomed and encouraged! Don’t forget your cameras!! The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge will be serving refreshments to supplement this fund raising event. If you need more information or would like a registration form, please contact Gary Lucas at 978-546-6788 .
