GMG Tech Talk- the Official Gloucester MA Hashtag- #Gloucester #MA vs. #GloucesterMa
Bill O’Connor writes-
Hey Joey,
I started this topic on Twitter, but I thought it would be fun to include your audience in the discussion. This isn’t about trying to get something to trend on Twitter – its more about creating an exclusive Twitter channel for Gloucester, MA. I just ran into a similar situation with Salem this month. There’s all kinds of Salems out there but only one Salem, MA. Going to #SalemMa to find info on their busiest month (Salem = Halloween) is much easier than visiting #Salem #MA.
I noticed that #Gloucester on Twitter is totally cluttered with other Gloucesters – mainly Gloucester, England & Gloucester, New Jersey. It’s enough to make someone have to dig for info on Gloucester MA, and not very user friendly.
I then checked #GloucesterMa and noticed that @GDTnews started it and think it’s a great idea. It fine tunes the aggregation of our collective data and makes finding Gloucester Mass info on Twitter so much easier. If we follow a pattern of posting to #GloucesterMa, we can collectively Tweet occasionally on #Gloucester #MA something like – ‘Looking for info on #Gloucester #MA? Try #GloucesterMa!’
I’m with @GDTnews on this and my vote is for #GloucesterMa in all Gloucester-centric tweeting!
Thanks,
~Bill O’Connor

Joey writes in response-
Well it’s a great topic Bill brings up and I should just state that there shouldn’t even be a debate. The official Gloucester MA hashtag for twitter should be #GloucesterMA and not two separate #Gloucester #Ma. The answers should be plain as day when you click on those respective hashtags on twitter.
When you click on #Ma you’re going to get anything and everything that anyone has used for the #Ma including everything in Massachusettes as well as a bunch of mother tweets. That alone defeats the purpose of the hashtag which is intended to drill down your results. On top of that with #Gloucester #Ma you use 15 characters as opposed to 13 characters with #GloucesterMa Those two characters are valuable real estate in a 160 character max tweet.
To make it more clear-
Click here for twitter search results for #Gloucester and then here for #Ma and take note of what it returns (you don’t need to have a twitter account to do this)
as opposed to the far better option-click the link- #GloucesterMa
That should make things crystal clear as to the far superior option.
Thanks Bill @kidns and @GDTnews for bringing it to our attention. No need for a poll, this is case closed, from now on I’ll be using #GloucesterMa unless of course I need those last two characters in which case the Ma gets the ax.

Adventure, Roseway and Highland Sea Photos From Bob Cullen
Joey,
Yesterday I was at the Gloucester Marine Railway with my niece and her husband so they could re-visit the Adventure, where they had gotten married 25 years ago by Capt. Jim Sharp in Camden. Joanne Souza, Director of Adventure.org was nice enough to give us a personal tour. We were pleased that the Roseway was also there, because the Roseway was a 2nd boat used for their wedding guests. We were lucky in that the Roseway was just leaving the dock and motoring out the harbor. I got some shots of that. Also, I met a Capt. Tom (I didn’t catch his last name, but he said he had once captained the Highland Sea (aka the Pilot.)) He said I had to take a once-in-a-lifetime photo of 3 ships built by the same shipyard (Tarr and James) in about the same year (1926), all in one frame. So, I did catch a photo of the Roseway as she went past the Highland Sea and the Adventure.
I also took a few photos of a carriage and some screws at the GMR. You probably have enough of those, but, in case you don’t. I just uploaded the 15 photos to my Flickr account – Bob C8. It’s a new set titled “Adventure Anniversary”. They’re set to public viewing. Feel free to post on GMG. In the set they’re in the right order.
It was sprinkling for a time yesterday when I took the photos, so I caught the authenticity of raindrops on my lens cover (or, I forgot to wipe the lens.)
Thanks, Bob Cullen (aka Jenn’s father)

Proposed Cape Ann Painter And Artist Club/Group from Alice Gardner
Alice Gardner Writes-
Hi Joey,
While getting a cup of coffee at Pleasant Street Tea Company this morning I had the pleasure of saying hello to you and proposing a painter and photographer group idea that I had been thinking about for some time. You mentioned that several people had talked to you about the same idea. We discussed that the group might meet once a month somewhere in Gloucester and that we could get to know other painters and photographers, share ideas and our work and ,of course ,have a great time. You asked that I become the "point person" and have painters and photographers who might be interested email me and then we would work it out from there. My email address is alicegardner @comcast.net and my cell phone number is 978-927-5199 and home number is 978-927-5199.
I work with watercolor , gouache and ink to create paintings of scenes and happenings around Cape Ann as well as run a "house portrait" business. My studio is at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester.
Any painter or photographer in the area who is interested, please email me and also include your phone number. I will be in touch with Joey and then notify you when and where the first meeting will be held.
Thanks Joey!
Alice Gardner

Cape Ann TV brings home coveted ACM awards
The Alliance for Community Media Northeast Region has announced the winners of the Fall Video Festival, and this year, Cape Ann TV is taking home two awards. Cape Ann TV won a Second Place award in the Children and Youth category for the Cape Ann TV Youth Productions Club “Interview with Mayor Kirk,” and a Third Place award in the General Talk Show category for “Cape Ann Profiles: Egypt Revolution” produced by Rich Sagall.
"All credit for the award belongs to Samantha and Cape Ann TV,” said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “She asked thoughtful questions and made me feel comfortable during the interview — not something that can always be said of professional news organizations!"
"The students who participate in our after school video club created a professional looking program, they do a fabulous job!” said Lisa Smith who coordinates the youth program. “This show was interesting to watch because Samantha Delaney-Burke, who was only in eight-grade at the time, had a great rapport with the Mayor. She interviewed the mayor from a teen perspective, and the viewer could learn about some of the influences that shaped the Mayor as a young person."
Cape Ann TV Youth Productions landed another coveted award earlier this year winning the top award for “Bad Day at Good Harbor,” from among all of the high school entries for the Gloucester Education Foundation Video Contest. The Youth Productions After School program has weekly meetings this fall on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m.
The other award recipient, Rich Sagall, producer of Cape Ann Profiles, was equally honored to receive recognition. “We are so pleased to win this award,” said Rich Sagall,” producer, “Our show is a great platform to interview a wealth of interesting people and topics in Cape Ann.” Cape Ann Profiles is a new interview program was started in (month) and features local people in the community and many diverse local and international subjects of interest. Some of Sagall’s recent guests have covered topics from the NOAA and the fishing industry to the Egyptian Revolution. The program is cablecast on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
“Cape Ann TV is working to help members to develop high quality programming skills and for our center to become a leader in providing valuable local content to the Cape Ann communities. These awards are a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of our members and producers,” said Donna L. Gacek, the executive director of Cape Ann TV. Cape Ann TV is on Facebook and Twitter and you can find much more information on http://www.capeanntv.org and capeanntv.wordpress.com.
The ACM-NE Region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The ACM-NE Video Festival honors and promotes community communications and local cable programs that are first distributed on Public, Educational and Government (PEG) access or Local Origination (LO) cable television channels. Awards are presented to creative programs that address community needs, develop diverse community involvement, challenge conventional commercial television formats and move viewers to experience television in a different way. The ACM-NE mission is to foster the belief that in order for democracy to flourish, people must be active participants in their government, educated to think critically and free to express himself or herself. The Mission of the Alliance for Community Media is to advance democratic ideals by ensuring that people have access to electronic media and by promoting effective communication through community uses of media.
