hi joey–

sorry we didn’t meet up, but our stay was fantastic.  causeway A+, seaprt grille A+, vista motel A+.  my wife elizabeth used to live on atlantic road one summer and we went back there, she’d never walked around halibut point so i showed her, i’d never gone into bearskin neck. 

i had to be in class by 430 pm monday, so after walking to a viewing point of thatcher island off old penzance road, we got under way south and west.

CAPE ANN CHAMBER AND GLOUCESTER SCHOONER FESTIVAL TO PRESENT CHECKS TO PROGRAMS SERVING YOUTHS ON THE WATER

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee will gather at Maritime Gloucester on Wednesday, November 28, at 3:00 pm to present checks to two local organizations in support of their programs serving young people on the water. The Gloucester High School Sailing Program and Gloucester Museum School’s Project Adventure Summer Camp will each be the recipients of $1,500 donations from the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce from funds raised through raffle sales and sponsorships in conjunction with the 28th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival held during Labor Day Weekend, August 31 to September 2.

“Thanks to the great fund-raising efforts of a dedicated Schooner Festival Committee, and the Committee’s strong support of Cape Ann’s youth sailing and rowing programs, we are pleased to be able to offer this support to two great local organizations,” said Robert Heidt, C.E.O. of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, sponsors and presenters of the Gloucester Schooner Festival since its inception.

“The Gloucester Schooner Festival is reaching out to these programs that put kids on the water as our way of demonstrating our commitment to those who will be its future stewards–and perhaps even our future schooner captains!” said Daisy Nell, Chairperson of the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee.

Buoys Days at Art Haven

Drop in at Art Haven to paint a buoy for our Community Lobster Trap tree. Each day is geared to an elementary  school so friends can paint together. Parents can carpool and get some shopping done.

All days are 3pm-6pm, cost is free.

Stuff I Don’t Get- Why PC Laptop Cords Need the Awkward Two Piece Power Brick Thingie

In this day and age they haven’t figured out how to streamline the whole cord set-up? If you’re traveling with a laptop obviously you want to travel light. The bulky cord set-up just seems like a no-brainer for streamlining to make more user friendly. What computer guru knows the reason for the bulky brick?

Oil Painting or Watercolor Workshop

Join nationally recognized teaching artist Lully Schwartz to try your hand painting master techniques. The experience and knowledge gained in creating small masterpieces will further the student’s ability to understand, control and create in oil paint and/or watercolor. Learning from the masters is an insightful method for advancing an artist’s talent.

A brief overview of European and American Masters will be followed by Lully’s demonstration on material use, under-painting and glazing. The atmosphere in which you will develop your work will correspond to the master’s studio experience for working in miniature. A special materials list will be provided and additional tools made available by Lully for use in the workshop. Note: Each artist will be given source material for the first painting and encouraged to paint an original miniature work of art for the second. To receive the optimal experience in this class artists sign up for both days.

“This Is Gloucester” DVD Review From A Biased FOB Linda Colman

Hi Joey!

Here’s my review of your “This Is Gloucester” DVD.  I’ve watched it twice.  First time was the day I received it in the mail.  Since I’m your target audience I decided to watch it a second time with one of my BFF’s, Judy, who’s never been to Gloucester and has never seen the blog.  Not being an FOB like myself, I figured she’d be able to provide the objective viewpoint that I lack since I’m a lover of Gloucester and a rah rah fan of GMG. I’m biased for sure.

Let me begin by saying that the DVD cover is really cool.  Beth Swan has a great eye for design and did a fantastic job.  Appealing right away.  Beginning the DVD with “Gloucester at Dawn” and the beautiful music was a great way to set the tone and my friend Judy said she didn’t know Gloucester was such a beautiful place.  BOOM!

I imagine that deciding what to include and what to leave out of the DVD from all the GMG material must have been the hardest part of making it. I don’t know how you managed to do it, but you wound up with a really well balanced presentation of the essence of Gloucester- the beauty of the place, the fishing industry, the history, festivals and the passionate people who call it home.  A really great mix.

The only trouble I had with the DVD, and believe me I realize that this is totally personal (although Judy had the same reaction), was the appearance of the “Rare Golden Sea Robin”.  I remember seeing it on the blog and it was bad enough looking at that thing on my laptop, but on my big TV screen?  Yikes!! I can see how it might be a big deal to land one of these horrifying creatures but it’s a TERRIBLE thing to look at.  Judy gasped, covered her eyes and I had to tell her when it was over so she could keep watching.  Just when we were regaining our composure, THERE IT WAS AGAIN!!!  It made an unannounced and unexpected second appearance after “The Back Shore” chapter!!  At that moment Judy fled from the room and wouldn’t watch any more.

The people chapters (as opposed to the creature chapters) appealed to me the most. I enjoyed “Building the Greasy Pole Shrine” because of the obvious passion of the people involved in its construction, “Salting Herring At Cape Seafoods” because… well I don’t know, I just liked watching it… and the “St Joseph Novena” chapters that finished off the DVD were the best.  The people who live in Gloucester truly love their city and it shows!  

So there’s my review, Joey.  It’s yours to do with as you please.  Run it on the blog, trash it completely, edit it as you see fit, whatever.  Oh, one more thing.  I think an introduction by you at the very beginning would have been great.
