Updated: If I Don’t Get The Answer To The “Why Aren’t The Windmills Spinning All The Time” Question I May Go Postal

Updated:

The following information is from Rick Johnson, Varian’s Facility Manager.
When winds at 7 miles per hour or less, the Varian turbine will not operate for economic reasons; when the wind speed is 56 miles an hour or greater, the turbine will shutdown for safety reasons.
“economic reasons” is incorrect. The turbine will not spin unless the wind is maintained at more than 3.0 meters/second (6.7 mph).
• The Varian turbine has also been down for the six week maintenance inspection that occurred a couple weeks back.
• We are also experiencing trouble with a couple of relays that are killing power to the turbine. We had service here last Thursday and yesterday working on the issue.
• The turbine can also be down due to icing being detected on the blades. It causes an imbalance and shuts the turbine down until ice is no longer detected.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just assume there is a logical reason that the windmills aren’t always spinning on days when there is wind but for many folks it drives them up a wall.
What drives me up a wall is not that they aren’t all spinning all the time on windy days but what drives me up a wall is the people who constantly question why the windmills aren’t  spinning all the time on windy days.
To my thinking, the people that spent the money, time and energy to get the windmills erected obviously want to generate as much power as they can from them.  That’s a logical assumption, right?
So why would anyone complain when they are not spinning as if there is some conspiracy theory as to why they aren’t spinning?  Do you really think the people that put up the money to build them are trying to withhold the generation of power from them for some reason?
One of these people is someone I may or may not be related to through marriage who asks the question every time we pass a windmill that isn’t spinning.
Another is one of my lobstermen who looks out the office window every day and gives me the update on how many are spinning on any given day.
So please, anyone with real inside knowledge as to why they don’t spin all the time when there is wind can you please enlighten me so the next time we pass one that isn’t spinning I can give the correct response to the conspiracy theorists out there who constantly harp on about it.
I’m not looking for guesses from ordinary citizens like myself.  I’d really like someone from Varian, Gloucester Engineering or the iron workers union who actually knows the factual answer to why they aren’t spinning when there would be enough wind to turn them to enlighten us.
Please and thank you.
"The Marine Invasion Will Not be Televised! Changes in Gloucester Harbor" Presentation Thursday February 21st
"The Marine Invasion Will Not be Televised! Changes in Gloucester Harbor"
image
Please join us this Thursday evening, February 21st in the Gorton’s Seafoods Gallery at Maritime Gloucester for the final presentation in our series on Gloucester Harbor.  Judith Pederson, Ph.D. MIT Sea Grant College will be the speaker. World reknowned marine scientists have been looking at Gloucester Harbor for invasive marine species over a number of years. Judy will share results from the 2012 Rapid Assessment Survey of Gloucester Harbor for Marine Invasives and Native Species. She writes "Human activities contribute to an accelerating rate of non-native species invasions that are a threat to resident populations and habitats. Yet our knowledge of how marine ecosystems are impacted is limited by few long-term studies and experimental data.  With climate-related changes in coastal and marine ecosystems, we anticipate shifts of both native and non-native species northward in response to increased temperatures.   In this talk we will explore non-native species in the Gloucester area and explore how communities have changed in response to both climate and human assisted invasions."
The event is free to the public. All programs are held at the Gorton’s Seafoods Gallery at Maritime Gloucester at 23 Harbor Loop. The program begins at 7:00 pm. For more detail about Maritime Gloucester’s winter programming go to http://maritimegloucester.org/visit/events.php.
So I figured I’d get to the gym.
Do you see yourself as one of these types?
I saw a couple of glimpses of me at the gym in there and I’m not proud.
Community Stuff 2/18/13
Joey
Thanks for letting the GMG community know about the upcoming Psychic Weekend at the Blue Shutters (March 8 & 9).  We wanted to share details on more plans for off-season events at the Blue Shutters.  We’re doing all we can to encourage more folks to visit the area during the winter and spring.
On March 2, we’re holding our first-ever Movie Night.  Many friends of the Blue Shutters are wine-lovers, so we’re starting with two wine-themed films — Sideways and Bottle Shock – which we’ll show in our Main Room overlooking Good Harbor Beach.
On March 16, we lighten things up (while warming up from the cold) with a St Patricks Soup-er Bowl competition.
On April 27, we’ll go a bit more classy with a Blue Shutters Tea Party.
And coming up (dates TBD) are another Food & Wine Tasting and our annual Brews & Blues event (with Cape Ann Brewery beer tasting and local musicians on our front lawn).
There’s information on these and other happenings around the Blue Shutters on our blog –www.blueshuttersbeachblog.blogspot.com – but we encourage anyone to call or email us anytime to hear more about all this.
Thanks
Molly Ferrill came down the dock last May. She also did a time lapse video from our dock which you can see below and went out lobstering for a day with Tommy Burns, the same Tommy Burns who took out Ben Grenon. You can see those videos below her latest.
Molly fared a whole lot better than Ben did aboard Tommy’s boat as you will see comparing the two videos.
Al MF Bezanson Expounds On The Perfect Snow Shovel. Do You Agree?
Al writes-
I’ve been shoveling for more than 70 years, starting back on the farm where we tended to the input and output of 20 cows.  Later, I learned in IE 1-01 that 21-1/2 lb is the optimum shovel-load, as determined by none other than Frederick W. Taylor, the father of scientific management.  This made perfect sense to me.
Now I have a long driveway, and I don’t mind shoveling it, within certain limits.  Nice way to work out and it feels real good to gaze back at what’s been accomplished.   And I never get a backache.  Because I use a strong, lightweight LONG HANDLED SHOVEL with the perfect aluminum business end.  No short handles for me.  They should be outlawed – except for little people, of course.  You can really send that snow flying off the slippery aluminum.
Where do you find the Perfect Shovel?  No place around these parts.  I buy mine at Big Blue Farm Supply in Clinton, NC, right in the heart of hog farming country.  Perfect for grain, corn and SNOW.
Al Bezanson
PS — I just spotted that photo of David Cox with the exotic S-curve job …. but I will stand by my Big Blue Hog Farmer’s Special.
The Perfect Snow Shovel
See Al I agree with you on the aluminum shovel shaped just the way yours is but I like it with a handle.  The kind we used for years to ice fish down the dock before they came up with the stupid white plastic ones.
My Sentiments Exactly
This is how I sound after reading the latest from the Eco Nazi or Psycho Feminist or how some school system wants to take away Valentine’s day because they say it hurts some kids feelings.
Who Wants To See This Documentary With Me? Cape Ann Community Cinema GMG Movie Night For Street Photographers Perhaps?
I bet Rob Newton would get this one for us if we had enough folks interested.
Sargent House Museum is looking for volunteer readers for its annual “Judith Speaks” program to be held in May.  All ages are encouraged to apply.
“Judith Speaks” brings alive the words of Gloucester native, Judith Sargent Murray, one of the nation’s first feminists.  As a letter-writer, essayist, poet, novelist and playwright, Judith Sargent Murray wrote tirelessly on behalf of women’s right to an equal education, an equal place in marriage, and a voice in the new republic.  The writings she left behind are inspiring, poignant, wry and funny.
Comparison Shopping Gloucester’s Big Three Supermarkets Stop and Shop, Market Basket and Shaws
I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.  Real world comparison of staple items that I always buy and have on hand.  The 5 items were selected ahead of time, not knowing what the prices would be at all three places and without prejudice as to what I thought might be cheaper at one store or another.
The 5 items are Granny Smith Apples, Chobani Yogurt, Store Brand Almonds, Store Brand Plain Soy Milk, Store Brand Peanut Butter.
Round 1: Chobani Yogurt-
Stop and Shop $4.99
Market Basket $4.99
Shaws $6.49
Round 2: Granny Smith Apples
Stop and Shop $1.69 Lb
Market Basket .99 Lb
Shaws $1.17 Lb
Round 3: 40 Oz Store Brand Peanut Butter
Stop and Shop $5.19
Market Basket $4.99
Shaws $5.69
Round 4: Almonds Store Brand
Stop and Shop $8.98 Lb (On Sale) Normally $9.98 Lb
Market Basket $5.05 Lb
Shaws $10.87 Lb
Round 5: Plain Soy Milk Store Brand
Stop and Shop $2.79
Market Basket $2.50
Shaws $3.49
Again remember I did not pre-scout these items to select things that would have outrageous price differences but picked them before I entered the first stop.
My guess that Market Basket was most often much cheaper was confirmed and confirmed by a mile.
If you bought one unit of each of these items at each of these stores your total would be
Stop and Shop $23.64
Market Basket $18.52
Shaws $27.71
The difference of $9.19 more money for the five items at Shaws over Market Basket is ASTOUNDING.  That is nearly 50% more money.  It would cost you 27% more to purchase the same items at Stop and Shop over Market Basket.
I don’t know about you but when the banks pay you what amounts to negative returns on your money after fees, 27% or 49% savings on your money is HUGE!
This took a while to compile and label each image, I hope it helps you make informed decisions on where to shop.
MyZone Fitness Challenge- Muffy Pulls Ahead With Another Psycho 2 Hour Session
image
I pulled within 4 MEPs of her yesterday but when I got to The Manchester Athletic Club she had just finished a 2 Hour session in which she amassed a 300 point lead over me before I cut that lead in half.
She’s a beast. But I’m more consistent.  We will see who out perseveres who by the end of the month.
I will say this- there is without question a fire that burns with this whole MZone thing and it’s because of the accountability in the reporting of my workouts.  I don’t  take breaks when I’m working out because I know that it will affect my score.  It pushes you to keep on pushing throughout the entire workout.
It’s Muffy vs your boy Joey C- who ya got?
Dr. Laurence J. Peter Quote of The Week from Greg Bover
"The man who says he is willing to meet you halfway is usually a poor judge of distance."
Dr. Laurence J. Peter (1919-1990)
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and educated at Washington State University, Dr. Peter was a coordinator of programs for emotionally disturbed children at the University of Southern California. As a student of bureaucracies, he was famous for his theory The Peter Principle, and his 1968 book of the same name, which posits that in a hierarchical organization an employee rises until he or she reaches one level above that at which they are competent. In later life he was active in the Kinetic Sculpture Race which occurs in many locations around the world (and looks like a whole lot of fun. Couldn’t we have one on Rocky Neck?)
