The Freedom Run

Muffy White submits-

This is a message for our awesome Cape Ann running community.

There is a new race this Memorial Day called the Freedom Run. This run is a hyper-patriotic celebration in honor of our service men and women.

A portion of the proceeds is going towards The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation – which is an organization created in honor of Glen Doherty that is committed to helping former special operations professionals transition and succeed into civilian life. image

Glen was one of the 2 former Navy SEALs who died defending the American Embassy in the Benghazi attack on September 11th, 2012.  He was an amazing man and a member of our family.  We are honored to have this race as a way to show our pride and love for him.  My son Callahan (age 7) will be running this race (his first 5K) for his Uncle Glen.  He is being joined by his best buddy Luke and an amazing group of Cape Ann runners. I want to give a special shout out to Ann Sanfilippo (she is Cal’s first grade teacher at EGS)who is among that group.  What an amazing feeling to be running a race with YOUR own teacher!  We would love to have more people from our community join us.  Everyone who runs with Team GDMF gets an awesome  team t-shirt in addition to the Freedom Run t-shirt — there is a great post race party sponsored by three breweries so after you run for Glen, you can have a few drinks for him too!  He would run and drink for you, that’s a guarantee.

Please contact me with any questions

Please register by Sunday May 12th in order get your Team GDMF t-shirt.

Muffy White’s Muff Riders Captain Tad Is Gunning For The Competition In This Year’s GMG/ Farm Bar and Grille Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Tournament At Spindrift

There’s not much more that repulses me more than double denim but if I had to say there was something, it would be a hairy dude wearing a double denim cutoff denim shirt/denim speedo combination.

Makes me want to throw up a little bit in my mouth.

That being said if you don’t think Muffy’s Muff Riders are bringing the heat, you’ve got another thing coming.

I hope to see you all there on March 16th to support your favorite Dodgeballers and or charity- Next Step.  An organization that makes life better for young adults afflicted with life threatening diseases.

MyZone Fitness Challenge- Muffy Pulls Ahead With Another Psycho 2 Hour Session

I pulled within 4 MEPs of her yesterday but when I got to The Manchester Athletic Club she had just finished a 2 Hour session in which she amassed a 300 point lead over me before I cut that lead in half.

She’s a beast. But I’m more consistent.  We will see who out perseveres who by the end of the month.

I will say this- there is without question a fire that burns with this whole MZone thing and it’s because of the accountability in the reporting of my workouts.  I don’t  take breaks when I’m working out because I know that it will affect my score.  It pushes you to keep on pushing throughout the entire workout.

It’s Muffy vs your boy Joey C- who ya got?

So Muffy Has Regained The Lead In Our Manchester Athletic Club MyZone Fitness Challenge. How You Ask?

I had no idea she’s go so deep into the archives of rogue fitness routines to try to pull out the win but apparently nothing is beneath Muffy when she competes.

My Manchester Athletic Club Spy Cam caught her top secret workout regimen which has propelled her over me in the standings-

The really cool thing is that even though I’m on vacation I can strap on my fitness band and it will record up to 16 hours of my workouts even if I’m away from the MAC.

I’d much rather work out at the MAC but as soon as I pop back in to the club all the data from my workouts away from the MAC will be uploaded to the servers and tabulated (don’t ask me how it works, it just does).

The challenge and this MyZone band has totally motivated me to take my workouts up a notch.

I’ll be experimenting with Muffy’s rogue workout regimen once I get back into town.  On that you can be sure.

If you want more info on joining the MAC or getting started with MyZone, call 978-526-8900

So The Challenge Has Been Accepted- It’s Muffy White vs Your Boy Joey In A MyZone Fitness Challenge Death Match

I’m up at the Manchester Athletic Club and they have these fitness bands that you strap around your chest and it measures your level of physical activity and then sends a report while you are working out to a computer system which generates a report.

The idea intrigued me because I know I try to push myself at the gym but you don’t really know how much your activity is stacking up.

So I signed up to get the MyZone Band and tried it out.  First you enter your height, weight and age and it calculates your average energy expended based on that criteria.  As soon as your workout is done you unhook the strap and you get an email with your physical activity report.

Now when all that gets explained to you you’re think wow, that sounds pretty cool.  But this is what happens in actuality-

There is a monitor inside the Manchester Athletic club and once your MyZone Band is on your name pops up and your level of activity is recorded.  The only thing that is displayed on the public monitor is your current level of activity, how many calories you’ve burned since your workout started and how many MyZone Points you’ve racked up.  So once you go throug a workout and you get your results you see where you might have backed off and it makes you want to push through harder all the way through your workout, knowing that you’re totally accountable when you see your results.

You can say it’s a gimmick, you can say that you shouldn’t need a fitness monitor band to motivate you but you know what?  Knowing I had that damn band on and that it was gonna spit out my results in my email box made me push harder than ever.  Gimmick- shmmimick it’s effective and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

So now to top it all off on the cool factor you can issue challenges to anyone else that has the band.  You just send them an email challenge and select a date range and whoever puts in more effort wins the challenge.  You can make bets around that, you can use it to motivate you even more.  Believe me when you have friends like Muffy White who you know is just gonna rub your nose in it if you lose- you will be motivated!

So It’s ON!

Muffy issued a challenge to me through the MyZone website that went like this-

Muffy  has invited you to a MYZONE Points challenge
from 16 January 2013 to 1 February 2013.
"Bring your A game wharf boy. "
Please log in and accept or reject challenge

Here are screenshots after my activity on January 23rd and Muffy yesterday-

and here’s Muffy’s-

So after one day Muffy is kicking my ass.  Her workout was 1:02 minutes, mine 45.  It should be said that Muffy is a gym rat and you all know me as the slug who works down the dock so if she doesn’t kick my ass there should be an investigation.  But that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna give it hell tryin.

Day 1 Muffy 177- Joey C 147.

Oh I forgot to tell you, you can also work out away from the gym I think as long as you activate your fitness band and then once you get to the gym it will upload the data. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.

Alright Muffy, let’s do this!

Muffy White’s Speedo Cops Are On The Case While The DodgeFathers Scarf Down Chicken Salad Sandwiches

Brett Willis submits-

Looks like we’ve finally tracked down those Dodgefather Twins. Apparently they have been hiding in the port-o-potties at Camp Spindrift right under our noses. Nobody panic, The Speedo Cops should have no problem corralling those hooligans and taking home the trophy.

Mamie’s Kitchen DodgeFathers Do not Look Intimidated-

As a side note I ran into the DodgeFathers at Mamie’s Kitchen yesterday where they were secretly plotting to bribe the Official Dodgeball Players Union (The DPU) while scarfing down $5 Chicken Salad Sandwiches and Potato Salad.

The nation’s most comprehensive health survey will be coming to Essex County in April 2012. Known as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, NHANES combines interviews and physical examinations to assess the health and nutrition of adults and children throughout the United States. Every year approximately 5,000 people from 15 different US counties have the opportunity to participate in the survey.
NHANES began in the early 1960s and is conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. The NHANES interview includes demographic, socioeconomic, dietary, and health-related questions. The examination component consists of medical, dental, and physiological measurements, as well as laboratory tests administered by highly trained medical personnel.
“NHANES is very much like a ‘health exam center on wheels,’ that goes out into actual communities to get data on real Americans,” said NCHS Director Edward Sondik. “It truly is a unique resource for health information in this country, and without it we wouldn’t have data on a number of important health conditions.”
NHANES provides annual estimates on a range of diseases such as the number of individuals who have heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, hypertension, respiratory disease, and other conditions. The information gathered in NHANES is used by public health officials, legislators, and physicians to develop sound health policies, direct and design health programs and services, and expand the health knowledge for the nation.
Individuals selected for the survey represent the U.S. population of all ages. Respondents first participate in a health interview conducted in the respondent’s home. A team of specially-trained professionals conducts the household interviews. The health examination that follows takes place in one of three mobile examination centers which will be set up in Peabody at the Boston Marriott (chosen as a central location for all of Essex County).
A team of health personnel, including a physician, nutritionists, and health and laboratory technicians using high-tech, state-of-the-art equipment, staffs the mobile examination centers. All participants receive an examination by a physician, as well as a dietary interview, and body measurements that include height and weight.   Some will be eligible for a hearing test, a scan to evaluate skeletal health, a breathing test, as well as a blood pressure test.  The various tests and procedures depend upon the age of the participant. No medical care is provided directly in the examination center, but a report on the medical findings is given to each participant along with an explanation from survey medical staff.
All individual information collected in the survey is kept strictly confidential, and privacy is protected by public law. Participants selected to undergo the physical examination receive reimbursement for travel expenses and are given a monetary incentive. Interviewing in Essex County will begin on April 7, 2012 and examinations will begin on April 28, 2012.
The Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health John Auerbach has endorsed NHANES, as well as Mayor Carolyn A. Kirk, the Gloucester Board of Health, and Noreen Burke, the city’s Health Director. For more information about NHANES, please call 1-800-452-6115, visit, or contact the Gloucester Health Department at (978) 281-9771.
