Statues & Plaques of Gloucester From Peter Dorsey – Chester Grant Stone

Joey,

In my travels around Gloucester there is one memorial stone that I do NOT recommend that anyone try to visit or to even look at closely. The best place to see this stone marker is right here on Good Morning Gloucester.

The reason for this is because the marker in question is located at the outside edge of inside of the first traffic circle you come to on Rte. 128 when you come into Gloucester; called Grant’s Circle. The only other way to see it is to park in the Friendly’s parking lot, hop over the traffic barrier at the side of the circle, and carefully negotiate on foot through two lines of circling automobile traffic. You could peer out the window of your car as you drive around the circle, BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT EITHER!! The stone marker is a tall dark, possibly slate or polished granite stone with a carved relief portrait of Chester Grant, for whom the circle is named ” This Circle, Erected by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1956, is Dedicated to Honor Chester H. Grant, 1897 -1954, A Soldier and Devoted Citizen”. Chester Grant served in World War I in France from 1917 to 1919. He was, “cited 3 times for Meritorius Conduct Under Fire and Received the Silver Star with Palm.” The silver star, known as the Croix de Guerre or the War Cross is a French Military decoration to honor people who fought bravely with the Allies against the Axis Force during World War I. “As a Public Official for the City of Gloucester – Displayed Great Ability in the Performance of His Municipal Duties.” There is a flag pole behind the stone marker with a light which shines on the flag from the underside at night.

Hello,

I wanted to send in a couple of pictures I took in Gloucester on Saturday. The first one is on Atlantic Road early Saturday morning. The road was officially closed but I was able to walk in and snap a couple of incredible wave shots.

The second was taken at Eastern Point.

The third is at Stage Fort Park……incredible amount of rocks thrown out of the harbor and into the park!!

My wife and I bought a condo in the Stage Fort Area. We live in Woburn but spend as much time as possible in Gloucester enjoying the new pad! I look forward to snapping many pictures we can share with Good Morning Gloucester…….I love reading this everyday!!

Another Perspective from Dwight Hebert-

A couple times a week, folks on the back shore see these low riding barges near the horizon heading north.  They are carrying fuel to our neighbors in Portland and places further north.  This picture shows where is all begins in the East Boston/Chelsea channel tank farm. This barge and tug just arrived for another load of fuel.

NSSPI Realizes we live in a world where young athletes are expected to do more of the same to get better. Play more soccer to become a better soccer player. Play more hockey to become a better hockey player. The list goes on. Unfortunately, if continue to do more sport specific training using incorrect movement patterns, we are simply creating bodies that are imbalanced and set up for injuries down the road. Instead, we need to be creating better athletes whose movement patterns lead to stronger runners, jumpers, swimmers and skaters, etc. In essence, we need to build stronger athletes whose athletic abilities can easily adapt to the demands of many sports, therefore increasing the longevity and strength of the athlete across many modalities.
NSSPI has designed a strength and conditioning program for athletes (Ages 10-17) seeking excellence at the next level of performance! Each session focuses on mastering key athletic movement patterns which will support the development of strength, power, speed and flexibility.  They will work on mobility, flexibility, strength and conditioning.  These athletes will decrease their risk for injury and build strength and confidence to meet the demands of their specific sport.

We have another note we wanted to pass along to the GMG community – about some plans for this weekend that’ll help take our minds off the winter storms.

One of those nasty winter blizzards forced the cancelation of our Soup-er Bowl earlier this year…but we’ve made the most of it and combined this with St Patrick’s Day.  We think this will be even more fun — this coming Saturday, March 16, we’re holding a St. Patrick’s Day Soup-er Bowl.  We’re still offering a 25% discount for those guests who bring some soup — and our judges will choose a winner, with the Soup-er Bowl champ getting a gift certificate for a free return visit (folks can even come and stay a night or two and just taste the soup). And because we’re celebrating St Patrick’s Day, there will be some Cape Ann Brewery beer on hand, along with other holiday treats.  The Shutters has a St. Patrick’s Day tradition to uphold.  Here’s a photo from last year – and a Soup-er Bowl reminder from our St Paddy’s Day hostess.image004

Civil War Monument at Mount Pleasant Cemetery From Peter Dorsey

Joey,

While researching the Civil War statue that is next to City Hall c.1879, I discovered that there was an earlier Civil War monument that had been erected by the City. So I went to find it, and check it out, and then photograph it early one evening in advance of an on-coming snowstorm. Its unlikely that many people even know that it is there; as it looks just like another, if larger, granite Greek Revival memorial in the middle of the cemetery, and not otherwise set apart. The granite obelisk was carved and erected in 1867 in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery which had a, “…symmetrically modeled shaft, 20 feet height, and stands in the center of the grounds. It was dedicated on May 27, 1868.” (History of Gloucester, James R. Pringle – 1892).

Like a few of the Civil War statues I have seen in Gloucester, there were lots of beach stone or cobble stones set around the base; perhaps signifying the many who perished.

Lost Dog At Dogtown

I was wondering if GMG could post a note about my lost dog. Venus was lost at the Dogtown entrance near Cherry St. on March 6th. She is an 11yr old female Alaskan Husky, weighing 40lbs, and wearing a solid blue collar. She has a black overcoat, and tan undercoat, with tan legs and some white on her chest.  She is shy and will avoid other dogs and people if possible. She probably won’t come if called, but is food driven and may be coaxed by treats. Attached is a full body picture.

Thank you, Dan.

Hi Joey.   I don’t know whether or not this might be of interest to your readers, but today I posted several images (Kodachrome slides, 1954) of Japanese fishing boats in reference to comments my mother made regarding the “Bikini Incident”.  On March 1, 1954 the US detonated a nuclear weapon (Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands) creating dangerous radioactive fall-out and impacting the fishing industry.  If interested, here is the link:  www.annbkennedy.blogspot.com

What’s New At The MAC? New Youth Basketball Program!

image

We are AST American Sports Training Academy on the North Shore, and we’d like to introduce
you to our new co-ed basketball skills & drills clinic program, AST Hoop-FUNdamentals for
boys and girls age 7-17.
We are launching our program mid-March at The Manchester Athletic Club (MAC) in
Manchester, MA (just off Exit 15, Rte.128N.)
Why should local Cape Ann players and their parents be interested in investing in skills & drills
classes this off-season, with spring sports just starting up?
We believe it makes perfect sense for kids who love the game, to keep in basketball shape and
continue to improve their all-important fundamental skills so they can develop to a higher
level…in preparation for next season.
We also believe younger kids, new to the sport of basketball, should learn the right way,
the first time and as for more advanced players, they only get better practicing the fundamentals.
A focused, fun, instructional program…our program…for one class per week will make the
measurable difference.
Our team at AST American Sports Training is staffed by experienced, energetic professional school teacher/coaches
and you can learn more “About Us” on our website www.asthoops.com.
Also, of note, is the discounted price we give to each member of an established team if 2 or
more team members enroll and multiple siblings get an even deeper family discount rate.
p.s. We are proud our clinicians are exceptional people with experience teaching school and
coaching children and adolescents.

I have attached a PDF that nets out our Spring clinic and we will be very grateful if you can include it on GMG.
Any additional information you may need, please let me know.
Thanks, and I am signing us up for GMG. It is excellent….

Statues & Plaques in Gloucester- Civil War In Riverdale From Peter Dorsey

Joey,

Another Civil War memorial I have recently noticed sits in the Riverdale section of Gloucester on Washington Street, near the intersection with Hodgkins Street and across from the Mill Pond. It is an area which was filled in on the tidal side, and has a granite sea wall built up around it, and a cast iron fence with granite posts. The historical marker is a granite obelisk with a pointed cap on the top and beach stones set into and around the base. The inscription reads, “Riverdale Martyrs in the War of the Rebellion 1861 – 1865”. The names of the Riverdale men who died in the Civil War are listed on three sides of the memorial. Carved into a top section of polished granite are the Union Army Corps badges. It is a very scenic location for a war monument; in a tidal inlet.
