My kids have been involved in drama programs in Rockport on and off from first grade through middle school. Every opportunity has provided them with skills, abilities, self confidence – enhancing their other social and learning experiences. I am grateful that in this small Cape Ann community, we have talented adults interested in creating drama for, and with, our children
The Middle School productions are large, and inclusive, supported by parents behind the scenes, helping kids create costumes and stage sets for the production. Mr. McCarthy and his skilled team start with a product in mind – the play that has been selected. They aim for that goal from tryouts through production. The cast, its ensemble-chemistry and individual skills, adds uniqueness, but some predictability is desired and inherent in this type of production. Within this small district, we are blessed with talent in both faculty and students; it is only the size of the children that reminds me that these are middle school productions. Mr. McCarthy somehow inspires and corrals middle schoolers’ capacity for individual drama, fostering new friendships, team skills, and self-confidence.
Experiences with Kristina Martin and Rockport Elementary’s multiage teachers’ Tell About the Time productions and Dona Lambert’s Art Harbor, Summer Pie Theatre, and Coupe troupes are so different from the Middle School productions; it’s like comparing a roasted chicken meal with chicken gumbo. You know the roasted chicken meal will be delicious, wholly nutritious, some variability coming from the spices and side dishes. The gumbo, well, it could be messy, but is always a rich, interesting and spicy experience, dependent on the ingredients on hand. The actors, of varied ages, bring unique skills, stories, and interests. These “ingredients” are assessed before plays are chosen or created. The resulting shows are magic and always unique, although priorities are more about nurturing the actors than about the actual productions. The children are transformed, together and individually, by the experiences. They gain faith in their dreams, and confidence in their ability to express them. Dona takes it a step further, with older troupers mentoring new cohorts and directing plays and workshops.
This summer, kids can join Dona at her Summer Pie Summer Workshops, coached by Middle and High School trouper-directors, under Rockport’s Unitarian Universalist Church’s accommodating steeple. on Cleaves Street in Rockport. Contact Dona at 978 546-2416 or donalambert1gmail.com for more information.
The Rockport Navy Weekend 2013 July 12th to July 15th
The Rockport Navy Committee (RocNavCom) and the town of Rockport will again be hosting The United States Naval Academy (USNA) Offshore Sail Training Squadron (OSTS). Five NA-44 foot sailboats will arrive in Rockport on Friday July 12th, 2013 and cast off Monday morning July 15th, 2013.
Sailors from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, the USS Constitution in Boston, Massachusetts and the Navy Band in Newport, Rhode Island have been invited to participate in the weekend events. The sailors/midshipmen will participate in various social and sporting events including a kickball game with Rockport children ages 6-16 on Saturday afternoon, a softball game against a Rockport Police/Fire team on Saturday evening and a benefit pancake breakfast at Brackett’s Ocean View Restaurant on Sunday morning. The public is welcome to attend the above events.
The RocNavCom is looking for Rockport residents to host the forty midshipmen and ten advisors during their visit. The midshipmen range in age from 18 to 23. The hosts will be responsible for room and board Friday, Saturday and Sunday, transportation to morning events and returning the midshipmen to T-wharf Sunday evening or Monday morning. Many of the activities the midshipmen will be participating in include meals. We are holding to the Navy standard of the buddy system; hosts must be able to accommodate at least two midshipmen or advisors.
Due the lack of available lodging for visiting active duty sailors, the Rockport Navy Committee is looking for Rockport residents willing to host sailors in their homes. We are holding to the Navy standard of the buddy system; hosts must be able to accommodate at least two sailors. The sailors only need lodging; no meals or transportation is required.
If you are interested in hosting midshipmen/advisors or sailors, or would like more information about the Rockport Navy Weekend please go to: www.rocnavcom.org

I’m All In For Getting A Nut Tuck
the Daily Mail reports-
How George Clooney has inspired cosmetic craze for ‘ball ironing’ – that sees wrinkles removed from you know where…
George Clooney has repeatedly joked that instead of his eyes he gets the skin on his testicles ‘ironed’ out, but now it appears he’s inspired a new craze in Hollywood.
Cosmetic expert Nurse Jamie told MailOnline that she added ‘Tighten the Tackle’ to the list of services at her Santa Monica spa, Beauty Park, last year, and it has been a raving success.
Delicately describing the $575 non-surgical treatment, the blonde beautician says it involves using lasers to remove hair, erase wrinkles and correct discoloration on the scrotum.
Listen, I’ll be the first to admit that as I’ve aged, my boys aren’t hanging all high and tight like they used to be. I’d long thought about getting a little nut tuck to smooth things out “down there” but now that my man George Clooney is endorsing it, I’m ALL IN!
$575 for the non-surgical procedure? Chump change to freshen up the boys.
Which spa around here offers such services? We can live blog the procedure. Maybe do a whole pay-per-view deal.
Thanks George for being brave enough to come forward with your own ball ironing to make it acceptable for men with low hanging nuts everywhere to “tighten their tackle”

ROCKY NECK GALLERY’S SUMMER ARTISTS SERIES INTRODUCES NELLA LUSH
RIP TIDE
NELLA LUSH
Oil, wax on canvas 36 x 36
Rocky Neck Gallery is pleased to announce the second show of the Summer Artist Series introducing the artist Nella Lush and her exquisitely beautiful seascapes and frescoes. The show, titled Nella’s Journey, opens Wednesday, June 12 until July 2. An artist reception will be held on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM. The public is invited to attend this free event and hear Nella talk about her work and process.
An experimental artist, Nella enjoys working on a variety of subject matter from abstracts to frescos, nature and the sea. The Cape Ann coastline is her muse where she spends time recording the atmospheric moods of the sea, light and sky. Back in her studio she interprets these emotions on canvas where the process of painting is, for her, a spiritual journey. She works mainly with oils using cold wax as a medium often adding marble dust to create more texture and depth. It is her application and scraping away of numerous layers, again and again, that shape the final painting.
“I connect with things that leave a mystery… that the viewer is digging into the painting and each time they find something different. I don’t seek perfection: I just seek to be heard and to have the viewer connect emotionally to my work and to bring them to a time and place in their life.”
Nella is represented by the Art Essex Gallery, Essex, CT; the Mystic Seaport Maritime Gallery, Mystic, CT; Lorica Gallery, Andover, MA; and Peter Alpers Art, Andover, MA. She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists; a member of National Associations of Women Artists in NYC; Rockport Art Association, Rockport, MA; a member and board trustee of North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, MA; President of the Andovers Artists Guild; and associate member of the Oil Painters of America.
Please join us and meet Nella Lush on Sunday, June 16th from 4-6 PM for a reception and artist talk. Delicious refreshments will be served.
RNG is located on 53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester. The hours are: Sunday – Wednesday: 11 AM – 6 PM, Thursday – Saturday: 11 AM – 8 PM. Free parking is available. For more information please visit our website http://www.rockyneckgallery.com or call 978-282-0917
Greetings dear Joe,
My name is Tesa and we met a few years ago when I was director of Sustainable Cape Ann (we started the Farmers’ Market).
I moved to Indonesia three years ago, and now live in California but still love to support cool projects back in Cape Ann. I did two interviews with Robert Newton in 2008 and 2011, which I just cleaned up and posted on my blog with a link to his current Indiegogo Campaign. If you have time to read them, and feel comfortable mentioning them on your blog, I was hoping it might create some support for Robert’s fundraiser.
Warm regards,
Tess Silvestre
