EJ and Karen Ristuben Get Their SUP On!

EJ and Karen swung by the dock on their SUP vehicles.  When I asked them if they had ever fallen they both replied only once or twice which amazes me and shows just how stable these things are.

To date I still haven’t tried it but I’m really looking forward to the back feeling like it’s not hanging on by a thread so I can get out there.

In the meantime check out the latest from Cape Ann SUP

Duck Tour Question

Jonathan Olly asks-

Greetings Joey,

I have a minor photographic mystery for you.  I recently came across this postcard on eBay, showing a WWII DUKW emerging onto Pavilion Beach, with Ten Pound Island Light in the background.  Do you or any of your readers remember when these tours operated in Gloucester?  The caption on the back of the card reads "Amphibious duck ride from land to sea on a guided tour of Gloucester Harbor.  Leaving every half hour from Pavilion Beach, Gloucester, Massachusetts."
Best regards,

Jonathan

A Question To The Rockporters- Fog Horns in Rockport – what happened to them – HELP ME PLEASE

Wayne asks-

Hi Gloucester;
I absolutely enjoy your blog. But I have a question concerning the Fog Horns in Rockport  and no one seems to be able to answer my question. I am hoping you can help.
I live on Phillips Ave, Rockport (near the Emerson Inn)..For years I could hear the FOG Horns during overcast days and find the sound so comforting & soothing (reminds me of days gone by). However,, for several months now-they have been silenced and I am heartbroken………
what happened to the Fog Horns?  Please don’t tell me they have ceased due to some disgruntled residents?
Please make my day – can you help me and maybe do a little digging around and see what you can find out?    ..I’m quite serious.
Most Appreciative-look forward to hearing from you

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester!

05132014-Evan1-Exhibition-e3b-24x24-72dpi

Dear Cape Ann Community,

The "You. Are. Beautiful. – Tribute to Warriors" show is now up at LAT 43 in Gloucester! This special event to celebrate art and support our wounded vets is this Monday, July 8 from 6:30-9:30pm.  Tickets are $20/person and 100% of the ticket price goes to benefit the Semper Fi Fund.  You can buy tickets at the door or here:  http://youarebeautiful.eventbrite.com/

Through this body of work, I am proud to share the voices and portraits of five veterans, four of whom are from Massachusetts.  All five of the veterans I photographed will be at the event, including Corporal Evan Reichenthal, USMC.

Evan decided he wanted to become a Marine when he was in middle school.  After graduating from high school in 2009, he enlisted and would see his dream of pursuing the ultimate profession to test one’s mind, body and spirit, come true.

In December 2010, Evan’s unit deployed to a small base in Marjah in southern Afghanistan.   Evan was an infantryman and was on foot patrol on January 5, 2011 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED).  The explosion severed his right leg, damaged his left calf, destroyed his right elbow and sent shrapnel throughout most of his body.

Evan underwent 26 surgeries following his injury.  He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.  Evan applied the same calm determination he maintained in becoming a Marine to his recovery.  His will to adapt and overcome continues to make him a warrior.  As he says, “My body may break but my mind cannot.”

Evan would say he is not a hero because he was just doing his job.  I think he’s a hero, and sometimes even heroes need help.  This is why we are doing this event.

Evan is also on the cover of my book, "You. Are. Beautiful. Volume 01 – Portraits and Poems."  I launched it in April, and it features 26 people I photographed for my project, veterans and beyond, across Boston and surrounding areas, Chicago and surrounding areas, Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco.

100% of net proceeds from the book go to charities that empower wounded vets and at-risk youth.  The book is available at Lula’s Pantry in Rockport, Willow Rest in Gloucester and online at:  http://ThiLinh.pixpasites.com.

I hope you are inspired by this work, and I hope you will pay this message forward.  You are beautiful.

Sincerely,

Thi Linh Wernau, Rockport, MA

In all my years I’ve never seen a penis cloud.  in fact I hereby declare this cloud formation a Penis Cloud.

So in the future all you meteorological students when you study different cloud formations you can think of me when you see “Penis Clooud” with a little asterisk next to it crediting me with the proper naming rights.

The Friday July 12 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club will
feature old friend and NASA Solar System Ambassador Ted Blank, with a
presentation on the exploits of the Mars Curiosity rover. Ted will give us
a colorful and in-depth look at the news and photos "just in from Mars"!
The Curiosity rover and the Mars Science Laboratory it carries are the most
expensive, most complex instruments ever sent to the surface of another
planet. In addition to great pictures, Curiosity is now returning
cutting-edge science data for the first time, including, for just one
example, checking out the martian radiation environment in advance of human
visitors!
Curiosity’s main mission, the goal of many individual onboard science
experiments, is to determine whether Mars could have once harbored life,
and even whether it might do so today.
This is exciting stuff. Ted is one of our most popular speakers, so come
early and bring your questions.
The meeting will begin at 8:00 pm, Friday July 12, at the Lanesville
Community Center.
GAAC meets on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community
Center. More information is available on their website ( http://gaac.us )
and Facebook page ( http:www.facebook.com/gaacpage ). No telescope is
necessary, just an interest in what’s going on out there. Meetings are free
and open to everyone, and presentations are suitable for the general public.

Update: Dinner Dealer Decks New In The Gloucester Things Pop-Up Store – Blue W/White Mesh GMG Caps Sold Out- 4 Black With Black Mesh Left

Check It Out Here-Gloucester Things Pop-Up Store

I’ve written before about how much I’ve saved using my Dinner Dealer Deck.  It’s one of those No-Brainer things unless you don’t like saving money.

For $19.50 you get over $300 in restaurant savings. Basically once you use two of the cards in the deck you’ve in the green.  I’ve used mine at Lat 43 and The Farm.  I still have Duckworth, Alchemy and Cape Ann Brewing,Willow Rest, 15 Walnut and a ton of other Beverly, Manchester, Essex, , all over the North Shore spots to use the other cards in the deck.  It’s not a question if all those cards get used, it’s a fact because I go to all those joints during the course of the year.  So if you hate money, don’t buy one.

if you only used the one for Cape Ann Brewing you’d already be in the green.

Help Draft the Next Chapter of Downtown’s Story

What do you love about downtown Gloucester? What do you think could be improved?

The work to build a great downtown is never done. There have been several recent accomplishments including the City Hall restoration project, HarborWalk, and Harbortown Cultural District. And we continue to move forward.

Given these and other accomplishments, now is a good time to come together to talk about the next chapter of work downtown. Gloucester’s Community Development Department is holding three public meetings to frame future opportunities and develop a set of shared values for downtown. The resulting plan will inform the City’s work downtown.

image

Your participation is important. Please plan to attend all three public meetings over the summer.

The public meetings will be held on:

Wednesday, July 10

Tuesday, August 20

Tuesday, September 17

All meetings will begin at 6:00 PM and will be held in the Kyrouz Auditorium on the second floor of City Hall.

Please contact Tom Daniel, Community Development Director, with any questions at 978 281-9781.

Hi Joey,

Can you help us spread the word on this month’s book club event at Duckworth’s Bistrot? Last month we had a packed house for JoeAnn Hart’s discussion of The Botany of Desire. Ken Duckworth made a breathtaking spread. Great food, excellent wine, and killer discussion.

I’ve attached a Word doc with details on this month’s shindig taking place on July 14. Hope that works.

Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Chris

On Sunday, July 14 author Tim Horvath will be leading a discussion of the National Book Award winning novel Mating by Norman Rush. You can find more details and buy tickets here: http://www.easternpointlithouse.com/#!events/c1vw1

Tim Horvath is the author of Understories, (Bellevue Literary Press) and Circulation(sunnyoutside). His stories have appeared in journals such as Conjunctions, Fiction, The Normal School, and elsewhere. His story “The Understory” was selected by Bill Henderson, founder and president of the Pushcart Press, as the winner of the Raymond Carver Short Story Award. He teaches creative writing in the BFA and low-residency MFA programs at the New Hampshire Institute of Arthttp://www.nhia.edu/, and has previously worked as a counselor in a psychiatric hospital, primarily with adolescents and children and young adults with autism. He received his MFA from the University of New Hampshire, where he won the Thomas Williams Prize. He is the recipient of a Yaddo Fellowship, occasionally blogs for BIG OTHER, and is an assistant prose editor for Camera Obscura.

Mating by Norman Rush: The narrator of this splendidly expansive novel of high intellect and grand passion is an American anthropologist at loose ends in the South African republic of Botswana. She has a noble and exacting mind, a good waist, and a busted thesis project. She also has a yen for Nelson Denoon, a charismatic intellectual who is rumored to have founded a secretive and unorthodox utopian society in a remote corner of the Kalahari—one in which he is virtually the only man. What ensues is both a quest and an exuberant comedy of manners, a book that explores the deepest canyons of eros even as it asks large questions about the good society, the geopolitics of poverty, and the baffling mystery of what men and women really want.

Future book club events include Anna Solomon leading a discussion of Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels (August 18) and Steve Almond discussing Stoner by John Williams. These are sure to sell out, so I’d suggest buying tickets early.

Thank you for EVERYTHING!

Cheers,

Chris
