St Peter’s Fiesta Eve Comments From Gloucester Chief Of Police Leonard Campanello

Hi Joe,

Just a quick note for your readers on this, the eve of St. Peters Fiesta (my first). The Gloucester Police Department is committed to making this event as safe and enjoyable for all who are attending. To that end, we would ask for the cooperation of all who attend to help us in that task. We are asking people to please not engage in disruptive behavior that would ruin anothers enjoyable time at Fiesta. The GPD will have a zero tolerance policy on public intoxication, underage drinking, and any behavior that would cause St. Peter’s Fiesta to be diminished in anyway. I have secured additonal officers from State Police and the Essex Sheriffs Department. They, along with a cadre of Gloucester Officers, will enforce the law when they have to in order to in order to maintain a safe nad enjoyable atmosphere for all.

I am looking forward to Fiesta and hope that some of your readers will stop and say hello as I will be at the event all evenings. I am wishing everyone a great Fiesta week and a very safe time throughout.

As always, thanks for getting the word out.

Respectfully,

Leonard Campanello

Creature Quiz From Al Bezanson

Joey___

The day after Kim Smith’s movie, just a couple blocks from the cinema, in the searing noonday sun, a squad of these were scurrying toward the east along the Rogers Street sidewalk behind Cape Ann Savings.  They were about two inches long.  The questions for your readers are, who were they, where might they have come from, where were they going, and why?

This was my first shot with this new lens.  There is a Sony E-Mount and a Micro Four Thirds version, $239.

Vincent Ferrini Centenary post game show

Henry Ferrini writes-

Joey,
The Gloucester Writers Center Gala was a huge success.  The evening festivities began with “Bites on the Dock” at Maritime Gloucester. Over 250 people gathered as the sun set and the moon rose over the harbor to dine on oysters, chowder, and a wonderful array of gourmet bites, all donated by North Shore restaurants and caterers. In the words of Vincent Ferrini “conviviality was taken to another sphere”! The Poet’s Cabaret,  MCed  old friend  Michael McNamara and  M. Lynda Robinson, the hour Cabaret showcased the new Ferrini book “Incredible Dancer” and the talents of some of Cape Ann’s most loved players who sang, danced, and recited the newly published verse of Ferrini.

It was an unforgettable and poignant evening with the three year old Gloucester Writers Center raising over $23,000.

Could you post the flyer for the event on GMG? I’d very much appreciate it and would love to have you join us.

Thanks.

Come Hear Gloucester’s Own, A. Austin Dorr, Speak at the “Tribute to Warriors” Event

05132013-Austin2-Exhibition-24x24-72dpi

Hello Gloucester,

We are getting closer to my “You. Are. Beautiful. – A Tribute to Warriors” art and charity event on Monday, July 8 at Minglewood Tavern (at LAT 43) in Gloucester.  Tickets are still available and are $20/person.  100% of your ticket will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund to help injured veterans.  If you cannot attend, you can still donate!  More details here:  http://youarebeautiful.eventbrite.com/

For my project, I had the opportunity to meet and photograph Austin Dorr, an 84 year old decorated Korean War veteran and former tuna fisherman for 35 years, who now splits his time among Gloucester, the Soldier’s Home in Chelsea and his camp in New Hampshire.  Some of you may know him personally or some of you may have heard of him when he made news in Gloucester at the age of 80, after building and launching his first boat.  When I first met Austin, he was a stranger to me.  I am proud to now call him a friend.

At my event, we are raising money for wounded veterans, and I’m also honoring the five veterans I photographed for my project, including Austin Dorr.  The timing of this event is significant because it is a way to honor our military around this Independence Day.  It is also significant because on July 11, Austin turns 85, and I think that is a pretty big milestone.  During the speaking portion of the event (between 7:30-8pm), I plan to have the audience sing “Happy Birthday” to Austin when I introduce him (shhhh! don’t tell him!).  05132013-Austin1-Exhibition-24x24-72dpi

Austin fought for our country during the Korean War.  The conflict has sometimes been referred to as “The Forgotten War.”  But Austin’s service and sacrifice should not be forgotten.  On July 8, we will thank him for his service and celebrate a life well-lived.  Feel free to take a look at a video I made for Austin the first time I met him:

Please join me at this important event to celebrate art and injured veterans.  Thank you and I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Thi Linh Wernau

They’re Ordered! The First Official High Quality GMG Logo Caps

Because There were people on both sides of the black cap/blue cap fence I ordered limited quantities of each.

Three color embroidery low profile caps so you don’t look like a dunce with one of those cheap high front trucker caps you see all over the place.  I ordered the exact hats I wanted for myself.  No compromises.  Something I personally would be proud to wear.  Can’t wait to get ‘em.

They should be in in about a month and I don’t suspect they’re gonna last long. (I’m taking a black/black and a navy/black for myself) Smile

McElhenny Steals The Show With This Potential Nose Pick

Kim Smith sells out Cape Ann Community Cinema with her riveting Butterfly movie and all anyone wants to talk about is this picture from the after-party.

Not less than 37 emails all asking if in fact that move in the background of Donna Ardizzoni’s picture by our boy John McElhenny was a flat out nose pick or not.

Honestly I don’t have a definitive answer so I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

image

So sneaky with the hand curled and digging with the thumb.  Interesting technique.  Only a pro nose picker pulls this move off.

Leave it to McElhenny to steal Kim’s thunder.

See how stoic Kim and Fred are in this picture?  I bet it’s because they know McElhenny is going to town picking his nose behind them and they’re saying to themselves “I hope Donna doesn’t post this picture of us with John McElhenny in the background picking his nose.  It’s all anyone will talk about and the magnificence of my butterfly movie will be lost on the distraction created by John’s nose picking”

That McElhenny- always stealing the show.  Diabolical move.

They don’t call him the best in the PR world for nothing.

Would I be surprised if he announces McElhenny PR Agency start up within the next week?

Hell no.

Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, John McElhenny.  Always front and center in people’s consciousness.  It’s what he does.

Don’t hate the PR Playa, Hate The PR Game.  That’s what I always say.

endangered and threatened species from mary barker- and a Poll

Hi Joey,

I had the unexpected pleasure of finding some Snowy Egrets, which are a threatened species, while I was killing some time in Ipswich last week.  One male was vying for the attention of 2 females.  He was putting on quite a show.  I also had the good fortune to encounter 8 Lady Slippers, an endangered species, while hiking in So. Hamilton.  I did not have my tripod with me to get super clean shots, but thought they were worth sharing.

Mary Barker

Editor’s Note from Joey-

When the person who named the Lady Slipper The Lady Slipper thought to themselves- “Hmmm what shall I call this magnificent flower?” and then came up with “Lady Slipper” I’m trying to figure out how they didn’t name it a Lady Vagina.

Lady Slipper…  Really?

When you look at it can you honestly tell me that looks more like a slipper than a a vajajay?

That thing’s got Lady Vagina written all over it.  Like you know how the term white rice perfectly describes white rice?  That’s the way I feel about the Lady Vagina. It’s misleading to name it a Lady Slipper- Borderline criminal actually.  False advertising 101.

In fact I think we ought to start a campaign to have the flower renamed so people don’t get confused.  It’s only right.

Lady Vagina FTW

Poll Time!
