Walking tours on the HarborWalk

Year round, select one of three Gloucester MA HarborWalk walking tours

1) Self-guided, year round, free, public-access and award winning walkway. 42 story moment granite posts installed as a permanent outdoor exhibit. The reclaimed granite posts feature plaques highlighting the city’s past and contemporary cultural treasures. Gloucester’s maritime heritage, innovators in business, politics and the arts are all featured. The signs also provide suggestions for exploration elsewhere in Gloucester and there are QR codes which scan to additional content. It’s family friendly for all ages and accessible for all. Visit just one story moment marker or “hop-on, hop off” like a transit line. Follow a specific inner loop 1.2 miles or extend it for a nice, long walk (3 miles RT). It is designed to be flexible for any length or duration, and for educational and programming opportunities for community and visitors. It was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates. http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk atgharborwalk@gmail.com

2) Guided: a mini mobile tour that leads you to 14 story moments and is narrated by the coolest host ever, Gloucester singer, Ann Marie. You may know her work with Bandit Kings and elsewhere. The HarborWalk mobile guided tour –an American Alliance of Museums gold MUSE winner- can be downloaded ahead of time and brought along wherever you go. Loads of talented Gloucester creatives helped and/or featured.   You’ll be guided along a shorter trail (14 stops) by following Ann Marie to the Story Moment markers that include an extra sign, postcards lettered “A” through “N”. There are surprises within stores, public spaces, and businesses as you explore our community via the app’s activities. Along with the video introduction, the two short films, “HarborWalk Cinema”, can be viewed anytime, but reward a visit downtown with not to be missed interactive elements!  http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk atgharborwalk@gmail.com

3) Self–guided kids and family activity: Become a “Gloucester Explorer”

Any kid who hunts and finds each trail marker icon can receive a certificate signed by the Mayor for becoming an official “HarborWalk Explorer”. People can print out this 2-page tracing master sheet (see attached PDF) ahead of time from their own printer OR check at the Chamber or Stage Fort Welcoming Center for copies. http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk at gharborwalk@gmail.com

Chickity Check It- Northeast Ocean Data Interactive Maps

image

There are a ton of different layers you can add to the map and adjust.  Lots of interesting data.

Check It!-

http://northeastoceandata.org/maps/commercial-fishing/

This is just one-

Overview

This map broadly characterizes commercial fishing vessel activity in the Northeast based on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data from 2006 through 2010 (full calendar years). In general, vessels holding permits in certain fisheries are required to use VMS.1 See www.nero.noaa.gov/vms/regs/index.html for additional information, including a link to federal regulations describing requirements for the use of VMS.

This particular map is for vessels using VMS and declared into the NE multispecies fishery plan. The relative amount of vessel activity is indicated qualitatively from high (red) to low (blue). Importantly, this data was intended for fisheries management purposes supporting law enforcement initiatives: NMFS describes VMS as “a satellite surveillance system primarily used to monitor the location and movement of commercial fishing vessels in the U.S.” The map does not distinguish between fishing activity, vessel transit, or other vessel activities. The most accurate interpretation of this map is that it indicates relative levels of vessel presence.

The relatively short timeframe of this map precludes consideration of historic fishing areas. It also does not illustrate more recent or future changes in fishing activity resulting from changing environmental and economic conditions, fisheries management, and other important factors.

Data Considerations

The data provided by NMFS contained the day/month/year, the geographic coordinates of the vessel at the time of transmission, and the vessel’s declaration code, which may signify fishery plan, program within that plan, and associated area identifier or gear-type information. These data then were aggregated by combining all program codes within each fishery plan.

The limitations of the data used to produce these maps should be understood prior to interpretation of this map.

These data are from vessels operating in certain fishery management plans and certain programs within those plans. This map displays data for vessels using VMS with a limited access multispecies permit fishing under a Category A or B Days-at-Sea or catch regulated species or ocean pout while on a sector trip, or those with a limited access NE multispecies small vessel category or Handgear A permit that fish in multiple NE Multispecies Broad Stock Areas (50 CFR 648.10).

It is important to note that these data include all trips using a NE Multispecies VMS code by vessels with these permits, and as such, may include trips that target other fisheries but use a NE Multispecies VMS declaration for another fishery as a management and reporting mechanism. There are many New England fisheries not described through any VMS-derived maps.

VMS data is subject to strict confidentiality restrictions. Therefore, the map shows vessels’ locations following the removal of data that would have indicated individually identifiable vessel positions.

Manchester Essex High School ALS Ice bucket challenge Friday

We freeze it & deliver it,
they dump it over their heads…. what a world !

In an event coordinated by the school’s DECA program, over 380 students, faculty, and staff participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money to help fight Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Participants made a donation of at least $10 to be a part of the challenge.  Cape Pond Ice generously helped by donating ice, and Home Depot donated many of the buckets used in the event.

The DECA students challenged 220,000 other DECA students across the USA and seven other countries to take the challenge, and as well, MERHS challenged the 950,000 + students in Massachusetts to take the challenge.

Pete Frates is a Beverly native who has ALS and was the inspiration for the original Ice Bucket Challenge. His father, John Frates, attended the MEMS/MERHS event and spoke to the participants about the cause.

Over $6,000 was raised by the school community for The ALS Association.

they dump it over their heads…. what a world !

Dyslexia Awareness Campaign
·    Is your child struggling to acquire reading skills?
·    Does it seem to take extra time to formulate his spoken and written ideas?
·    Are messy handwriting and poor spelling obstacles to success?
·    Is your child feeling frustrated with all aspects of school – even the social side?

Efforts to increase awareness and provide better educational support for students with dyslexia are gaining momentum nationwide. Decoding Dyslexia – MA is leading the way in Massachusetts by organizing regional informational events for parents and professionals. The following free presentations are open to anyone interested in learning more about the needs of struggling readers and how literacy skills can be improved for all children.

This free workshop will include the following:
·    Understanding and identifying the profile of a dyslexic learner
·    Current research on dyslexia
·    Information on locating and advocating for appropriate services
·    A discussion of the current advocacy efforts of MA parents to increase opportunities for students with dyslexia in MA public schools.

About Decoding Dyslexia-MA (DDMA):
Decoding Dyslexia – MA is a grassroots movement driven by parents, educators and professionals concerned with the limited access to evidence based interventions for dyslexia. We are inspired by and collaborating with other Decoding Dyslexia groups nationwide. We aim to raise awareness, to empower students with dyslexia and their families, and to inform policy makers on practices based on neuroscience to identify, remediate, and support students with dyslexia in Massachusetts’s public schools and institutions of higher learning.
