Valentine Inspired Afternoon Offered to Families at Cape Ann Museum

MOVED A dance/movement workshop for kids of all ages led by Sarah Slifer Swift.
When we say that something “moves” us, we usually mean that it touches us emotionally. Using the sweet sentiments of the Museum’s historic Valentine collection, participants will explore gesture, composition and the fun of communicating through dance.
2:00-4:00
Families are invited to join museum staff in creating valentines using various mediums in the museum’s Activity Center.
This program is free and open to the public.
The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed during the month on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is $10.00 adults, $8.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors, students. Children under 18 and Museum members are free. The second Saturday of each month is Family Free Day. The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club has an absolute monster of a program for you on Friday night February 13.
Many of those wonderful pictures of objects in space — galaxies spinning, black holes feeding, stars being born and dying, planets moving around other stars, and so many others, are taken from space, not just by Hubble but by a whole fleet of space telescopes.
We actually have different space telescopes to observe different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum — light — from Gamma rays through our rainbow to the Infrared.
Why are the different space telescopes used and what do we learn from them? What do the different pictures look like? What is the future of space telescopes? We have the answers for you.
On Friday, February 13, North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club president and long-time GAACster Kevin Hocker will show us examples of different space telescopes that do different jobs, and, of course, we’ll see some of their amazing discoveries.
The space telescopes we will hear about include
- Swift Gamma Ray Burst Telescope
- Chandra X-Ray Observatory
- Hubble Space Telescope
- Kepler – the telescope in the hunt for Earth like planets
- Spitzer Infrared observatory
- And of course, the Future of space telescopes – James Webb Space Telescope
Kevin will show us an overview of each telescope, its features, and of course a striking and colorful assortment of photos from each. Don’t miss this one! You’ll be telling your friends all about this for weeks!
GAAC meets from 8:00 to 9:30 pm on the second Friday of the month at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. There is no cost, and all are welcome. You don’t need to know anything about astronomy and you don’t need to own a telescope to have a great time! CAPE ANN YMCA TEEN LEADERS CLUB
18th ANNUAL ROCKATHON HELPS FEED THOSE IN NEED
Nearly four dozen dedicated, service-minded teens “rocked” for 24 sleepless hours to raise awareness and food donations for Open Door Food Pantry, St. Vincent De Paul Society and local families
Gloucester, MA – For the 18th year, the members of the Cape Ann YMCA Teen Leaders Club each rocked the night away (in rocking chairs, that is) for 24-sleepless hours to raise awareness and food donations for local families in need. This year’s event continues to accept donations and to date has collected 24,699 cans and non-perishable items (financial donations were credited 3/$1) to be donated to the Open Door food pantry, St. Vincent De Paul Society and directly distributed to families and elders in need. This event continues to grow each year impacting more and more community members who need assistance with one of life’s basic necessities–food. In 2014, the Rockathon collected 15,100 canned goods and just one year later is on its way to nearly doubling that amount in donations.
“This event has grown significantly over the past several years and we are so incredibly proud of each one of our Y Teens for pushing through the tremendous discomfort in order to serve our community to provide, literally, thousands upon thousands of meals for folks and families in need. By rocking for 24-sleepless hours, we get to truly get a sense of self sacrifice.” said Rick Doucette, Executive Director of Teen and Camp Services at the Cape Ann Y. Doucette added, “We’re super-excited and grateful that the Gloucester City Council will formally recognize our Leaders Club and their commitment to helping our community at the March 10 Council Meeting at City Hall.”
The Cape Ann YMCA has a long history of being at the forefront of youth work with teens and strives to empower the next generation of leaders by giving them the tools to succeed. Through community service opportunities, leadership clubs and drop-in Teen Centers where everyone is welcome, the Y is creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere for young adults to thrive.
With the generosity of the Cape Ann community, the dedication of YMCA Staff and volunteers as well as the support from local businesses, this was the most successful Rockathon ever. Rockathon space was provided by Mac Bell and food for the “Rockers” was provided by Carroll K Steele Insurance and Chick-Fil-A® at the North Shore Mall.
