Electricity Update: Boston Globe Says Electric Companies Now Fear Solar
Utilities fight rise in home solar power
By Joby Warrick
Three years ago, the nation’s top utility executives gathered at a Colorado resort to hear warnings about a grave new threat to operators of America’s electric grid: not superstorms or cyberattacks, but rooftop solar panels.
If demand for residential solar continued to soar, traditional utilities could soon face serious problems, from declining retail sales and a loss of customers to ‘‘potential obsolescence,’’ according to a presentation prepared for the group. ‘‘Industry must prepare an action plan to address the challenges,’’ it said.
The warning, delivered to a private meeting of the utility industry’s main trade association, became a call to arms for electricity providers in nearly every corner of the nation.
Three years later, the industry and its fossil-fuel supporters are waging a determined campaign to stop a home-solar insurgency that is rattling the boardrooms of the country’s government-regulated electric monopolies.
Wow, solar has come that far that the Electric companies are fearing them as making them potentially obsolete. I had no idea when Brian O’Connor signed up and qualified for Solar at his house that he told me that it’s actually going to pay him to have solar panels installed.
In my mind solar went from not to long ago something that rich environmentalists did to feel good about themselves to now a viable financial alternative that makes sense not only for the environment but also for the pocketbook and for the common man.

Check out what East Gloucester’s Brian O’connor’s Solar Energy advisor had to say in our interview a couple months ago-
Hi Joey,
Just a quick follow on Brian and Diane O’Connor’s Solar evaluation.
Brian and Diane’s home has qualified and they have decided to put rooftop solar on their home in Gloucester. (Only 15% of homes in MA are eligible.)
Because of their home’s orientation to the sun and other factors, their entire cost will be covered by various federal, state and utility incentives. In fact they will actually be making money over and above their cost. And getting 90% of their electricity for free.
If anyone else would like to find out if their home qualifies, I just need their contact information and our techs will initially rate the home via satellite. If it qualifies, we can up with a time for us to talk about how it all works. (About 90 mins.)
I am in the process of working with several other Gloucester residents and will keep you posted on their progress.
Many thanks for your continued support,
Kevin Prickett

Spring is here and so is the Annual River Herring Count!
Each spring for over 10 years, the City of Gloucester, the Eight Towns and the Great Marsh Committee and NOAA-NMFS have coordinated the annual river herring (alewife) count at the top of the fish ladder by the West Gloucester Water Filtration Plant on Essex Avenue.
Volunteer monitors help scientists by observing and documenting the spring run of herring as they migrate from their home in the Atlantic Ocean to their freshwater spawning grounds. This is a wonderful activity for interested individuals, families, youth organizations and students who want to play an active part in local conservation efforts. Learning to become a volunteer monitor is easy and the time spent observing can require as little as ten minutes of your day.
This year’s count will take place from April 1st to May 30th.
A training session will be held on Saturday March 28th at 9:00 A.M. in the
Friend Room of the Sawyer Free Library.
If you would like to become a volunteer monitor and help efforts to protect this important species, please contact:
Dave Sargent/ Alewife Warden @ 978-282-8018 – dsargent@gloucester-ma.gov
or Max Schenk @ 978-282-8025 – mschenk@gloucester-ma..gov
Time coverage is the key to a successful count and any time you can give will make a difference!
Correction: Cacciatore’s Opening Date Pending Final Inspections!

Update:
We just got a phone call from the guys at Cacciatore’s and while they put out the sign that they would be opening, this Saturday March 21 they have to wait for a few final sign offs from the City to get started. They want to make sure everything is just right and are looking to next week but assure us that they will give us a heads up as soon as they get final sign offs from the city.

We Lost A Great FOB From Ontario Canada- Bruce Bonham
Bruce had been a regular on GMG from the early days even though he lived in Canada, and visited every summer. Always friendly and upbeat he loved GMG and Our City. In the picture below you can see Bruce with the original GMG Bumper Sticker back in May 2009, a year and a couple months after GMG started and Bruce was already hooked.

Homie Is Flying At The #GloucesterMA Booth At The Seafood Show
Big time props to all those who made the Gloucester Booth happen. For too many years I’d attend the International Boston Seafood Show and Gloucester had no representation. This group has elevated our town on an international stage and for that we should all be proud. Thank you for all you do.

Cousin @allyshims says it best…

You know how cell phone companies come out with incredible numbers of features with every product upgrade? Well I’m willing to bet that if a cell phone manufacturer developed an “opt-out” button for group texts that it would be a huge hit.
There are definitely situations where group texts are big time helpful but I’m sure that I’ve initiated some group texts that have irritated the hell out of people. This is why they shouldn’t go away, but have the option to self opt out of them.
Here’s the situation:
You’re waiting for an important business text about what time to meet up when you get a group text invite to a BBQ with all your best buddies. You’re thankful for the invite but know that you won’t be able to make it because you know you’ve got this business meeting. So you politely decline and then put your phone back in your pocket while waiting for confirmation on what time you’ll be meeting your business associate.
Aaaaaand that’s when your phone starts to blow up with replies (not unlike your own initial reply) and then counter replies all throughout the text message chain. Each time your phone chirps you’re obligated to check it because you’re still waiting for that confirmation from your business associate. Phone in and out and in and out of your pocket.
If you knew you couldn’t make the BBQ right off the bat and you had an “opt-out” button, you’d be all set.
Maybe I’m missing something and it already exists. If so, let me know. Also how do you handle group texts?
PS:Thanks cousin for the great tweet this morning 🙂

Even if you LOVE winter and winter sports like I do, the brutal winter temperatures made it difficult to get outside to exercise. Hopefully, you found…
