…”Waves break on outcrop rock: granite,
fire-formed and hard, headland granite –
no coddled cape, no sandbar,
and nothing soft in her city, no knickknack,
Gloucester-by-God, attitude granite.
The beaches are broken by wetland, woods of oak
and pine, grace in paintscape chasms, coves,
the harbor of ships, sailboats, a fishing fleet”… Continue reading

Came upon an unexpected free concert at the Stage Fort Park bandstand Friday evening. The 195th Army Band from Belfast. Maine. Cheif Warrant Officer/Conductor, Brady Harris lead the group and we enjoyed some great jazz music and lovely lighting. A fish sandwich at the Cupboard made for a neat little impromptu picnic.

Click for more upcoming concerts, (including one tonight!) at the bandstand.

Delicious lobster bisque at the Lobster Pool Restaurant in Rockport! I ate everything else up before I could document it. What a delicious view relaxing in the swing too! They have Homie greeting cards and a lobster etched in the cement sidewalk. Click for the slideshow:
This art haven kids mural always makes me happy…

Powder House Hill Reservation in Manchester has a restored powder house from 1810, a nice view, lovely nature, and walking trails.
I loved the story that Manchester Historical Society Curator, John Huss, told about the day that the British came into the harbor and everyone trekked out to meet them with their one new shiny cannon. It was so exciting that all the towns-people came too see from all around. The British saw a swarm of people and feeling out-numbered rowed back to the boat. The townspeople rejoiced and trooped back into town in victory using the only ammunition they had that day in celebration. On the route back, they found their one shiny cannon-ball left behind at the side of the road. True of not, it’s a great story and even better with John’s embellishments and excellent story-telling abilities.

A fantasmagorical show of fireworks over Stage Fort park! Did we witness controlled fires exploding in a multitude of colors and shapes projected high up into the sky with cascading sparkles trickling overhead for the pure act of enjoyment? Why yes we did!
One of my favorite summer snack-tivities is getting ice cream at Harbor’s Point Ice Cream and snacking while walking along the boulevard toward Blyman Canal to see the bridge open (what an awesome thing about Gloucester!) and watch the boats. I always usually see a cormorant fishing too…

Susan Beaudette, the owner, who gives me new ice cream with a smile when I immediately flop it onto the floor. I love that they do kiddie size too, which really is enough for me to split with my wee son. Enough is an important concept when it comes to ice cream.
Menu bits… there’s more, yogurt, and candy, but I didn’t take photos of everything:

Nice house I spotted driving around Annisquam.

…”At the helm, bronzed hands grip a spoked wheel,
sou’wester and visage age to a patina.
My father was one who sailed from this harbor
And returned with a trip of fish
all but one voyage, but you take note
of they that go down to the sea in ships.”… Continue reading
