Hello Gloucester Public Schools Families,
Gloucester High School has reached an important milestone that we want to make sure all families know about. After a multi-year review of our programs, curriculum, and instruction, Gloucester High School has again been awarded accreditation status by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
Moving well beyond the simplicity of test scores, this in-depth review recognized how well Gloucester High School’s teachers work together, the quality and depth of the school’s curriculum, how our staff care for and support students’ social emotional well-being, and the school’s leadership.
The report on GHS is the culmination of a three-year process that included site visits, extensive document reviews, class observations, and interviews with teachers, family members, and school and district leaders.
Dozens of Commendations
NEASC commended Gloucester High’s work in dozens of areas including:

The ongoing accreditation of GHS is a significant achievement that warrants recognition across our community. We wish to acknowledge and thank the entire Gloucester High School staff. Their effort and expertise ensures that every day matters for our students.

Our Opening Weekend is Saturday January 21st (11-5pm) and Sunday January 22nd (1-4pm) 2023 to coincide with the 2nd Annual Gloucester So Salty. George Wingate opens the season with ‘Letters / Words / and.’ In the words of an artist friend, George is a postmodernist, a minimalist, a sculptor, a poet and an all over evocator. I would add he is a wordsmith; he invigorates the mind.
Come whenever you can.
Come often during 2023; it’s Gloucester’s 400+ and there will be lots to view.
The gallery welcomes all.

As You Like It: candlelight masque & listening party with Lanes Coven Theater and new music by Scott Moore
As You Like It brings a newly-composed score to the Annisquam Village Church on Saturday,
January 21, 2023 at 7pm. Artist-in-Residence Scott Moore created the eclectic large-scale work
throughout the spring and summer, playing and recording every instrument himself. The music
brings to life the forms and gestures of Shakespeare’s beloved pastoral comedy with a fun, fresh
pastiche of styles and sounds—from absurd, neo-Baroque strings and harpsichord, to hip-hop
drums and impressionist dream folk. Originally commissioned by the Louisville (KY) Ballet, and
premiered as a ballet in August, the piece has been substantially reworked to include dialogue
from the play, delivered live by Gloucester’s rising theater stars, Lanes Coven. Conversation with
the composer will chronicle the journey from conception to premiere, illuminating the artistic
process and framing the evening’s performance. A feast for the ears and the mind, this unusual
and enchanting evening will also feature light refreshment. All are welcome; donations are
gratefully accepted, and will benefit the AVC music program.

Spend the summer on the water as a deckhand on Adventure.
We are looking for several people 18+ to join our 122-foot schooner, sailing almost every day from the pier at Maritime Gloucester. Sailing experience is a plus but not required, sail training is part of what we do. These are live-aboard positions so room and board are part of the package along with good pay and a chance to be part of the awesome crew, sailing and maintaining our National Historic Landmark. More details are available here. Send a résumé and cover letter to Stuart Siegel, Executive Director, stuart@schooner-adventure.org.

Sharing information from our friend Bill Wrinn:
If you see this guy, get him a lobster roll! He needs one bad!
We have a famous gentleman cartoonist coming to town this weekend and he needs your help. You’d think with all his success, Keith Knight would have it all. But this North Shore native now lives in a North Carolina seafood desert and he is starving for a real lobster roll. Like REALLY starving.
It’s gotten so bad down there, he’s forced to chase the lone lobster food truck from town to town just for an overpriced knockoff.
Why is he here? On Monday at 2 p.m., the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation will host Keith in honor of Martin Luther King Day. (Free, but lobster roll donations accepted)
Keith is many things to many people: artist, rapper, social activist, tv producer, husband, and father. He is also one of the funniest and most highly regarded cartoonists in America. For almost three decades, this multi-award-winning artist has brought the funny back to the funny pages with a uniquely personal style that’s a cross between Calvin & Hobbs, MAD, and underground comix. His art has appeared in the Washington Post, Daily KOS, San Francisco Chronicle, the Boston Herald, Ebony, ESPN the Magazine, L.A. Weekly, MAD Magazine, and the New Yorker.
Keith’s autobiographical strip, “the K Chronicles,” launched in early 1990 and has won the Harvey Kurtzman Award for Best Syndicated Comic Strip. “The K Chronicles” has also won the Glyph Awards Best Comic Strip multiple times. He has brought his comic strip slideshow presentation – the same one he will be giving Monday at the Gloucester Meetinghouse – on America’s racial illiteracy worldwide, prompting the NAACP to recognize him as a 2015 History Maker.
Keith has also won a Belle Foundation grant, earned a Comic-Con Inkpot Award for Career Achievement (one year before director Stephen Spielberg got his!), presented at the U.S. Library of Congress, and performed hip-hop naked at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Keith’s work was also the subject of a recent exhibition at San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum.
He is also the co-creator of the television show “Woke” that recently completed its second season on HULU. The show stars Lamorne Morris as “Keef” and is based on Keith’s life and work.
Keith is a 1990 graduate of Salem State University and the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the school in 2022. His presentations are infused with urgency, humor, satire, politics, and race. Designed to provoke constructive, civil dialogue amongst people of all colors and orientations, the presentation has been a hit at university campuses and community organizations around the U.S. and in Europe. (For more on Keith and his work, visit www.keithknightart.com)
If you’re skeptical, ask Bev Low. She’ll vouch for him.
Hope to see you there and don’t forget his lobster roll!

The renovation project of the Beeman Memorial Playground seems to be nearing completion. We visited just as the final bell rang one afternoon last week and I can attest to the shiny new equipment and soft groundcover. This was mostly federally funded and the new “up-do” is looking great for our children!
