The Academy Class of 2022 Sets SailThe soon-to-be graduates arrived at the Cape Ann Museum on June 23rd with a well-earned sense of pride and confidence. And rightfully so – the group of 15 students had recently completed seven months of hands-on lab work, three months of a paid-internship at prestigious laboratories, and many (12 of the 15) had already confirmed employment for after graduation.

GMGI Waives all Biotech Academy Tuition for 2022-2023 “The Big Waive” a gift to Cape Ann’s young adults
Gloucester Biotechnology Academy has announced a new financial structure to support young adults’ investment in their futures. Through the generous support of donors, tuition and fees will be waived in their entirety for the Academy’s incoming class of 2023. The Inaugural Joseph J. Rosa Impact Award
In a special moment during the recent Academy graduation Dr. John Doyle stepped up to the podium to introduce The Joseph J. Rosa GMGI Impact Award, which will be given annually in recognition of a volunteer who best exemplifies dedication to the mission of GMGI and the Academy. John went on to describe Joe’s storied history with GMGI, from the early conversations around GMGI’s founding in the Rosa’s kitchen to Joe’s dedication to each of the past six Academy classes.
“Joe, there has been no one more influential at the Academy since its inception than you,” John said. “You have had a profound effect on both our students and educators.”
Joe went on to accept the award and express his gratitude at the podium. In true to his character, Joe turned the focus to the impact of the Academy. “We should all be extremely proud,” he said. “This kind of school does not go on anywhere else as far as I’m aware, and the success of the students in getting jobs almost immediately, that doesn’t happen anywhere.”
GMGI is grateful for the unparalleled commitment and dedication Joe has shown the organization and is delighted to honor that commitment each year going forward with the Joseph J. Rosa GMGI Impact Award.
The GMGI Science Forum Returns
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the GMGI Science Forum returned this spring for an in-person, daylong symposium on the latest advances in marine genomics. Guests gathered at Gloucester High School on May 15 to hear from a lineup of speakers that included scientists from Stony Brook University, The Ohio State University, Pacific Northwest Research Institute, University of Connecticut, Boston University, UMass Amherst, GMGI, the J. Craig Venter Institute and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.
Guests enjoyed casual conversation before the morning session began, focusing on harmful algal blooms and diseases that impact bivalves — including the contagious cancer that affects some clams. After a networking lunch, the talks resumed with a focus on viruses in the global oceans and the diversity of life in deep-sea habitats, population genetics of endangered sea turtles, leveraging genomic tools to understand coral bleaching and the role that sponges play in nutrient cycling on coral reefs. GMGI’s Donald G. Comb Science Director, Dr. Andrea Bodnar, emceed the conference, and was thrilled to have the event back in GMGI’s rotation. “Since 2015, GMGI has built a reputation for convening thought leaders in genomic research, and I’m delighted that we are in a position to continue that tradition,” Dr. Bodnar said. “It’s an inspiring event for both our research team and guests alike.”
After the final talk concluded, guests gathered downtown at the Gloucester House for a cocktail hour on the harbor.

I was startled to see something flashing atop a dead tree in our backyard marsh in Magnolia so I dashed outside with the camera to find this osprey enjoying its catch. It seemed to be wiggling a bit which is why the sun reflected and drew my attention. We do see osprey once in a while out here but not too often so this was fun to observe. The action seemed to draw curious smaller birds to check it out. I did not have a clue what kind of fish that might be so I consulted my favorite fish expert…Finn…who told me it’s probably a pogie. Thank you Finn for the assist!
