Kops ‘n Kids Fishing Program

How great is this. Gloucester just keeps getting better and better.

The old adage goes “a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work” but our new Gloucester Police Departments’ Kops n Kids fishing program is our work and there are no bad days. That is because our work is so much more than just fishing.

We use fishing as a tool to connect police officers and our youth in Gloucester. Officers work side by side with kids, helping them bait, cast, hook and release fish all while bonding and learning that they are not so different from each other after all. We will also teach kids about fishing conservation and boating safety. Our fishing experience will create opportunities to instill patience, ingenuity, preparation and humility. Fishing is an activity most anyone can do and afford. We will provide all fishing equipment and life jackets. We will be using our police boat, life jackets must be worn, waivers must be signed. One parent per child may attend. We will be fishing from the inner harbor to Ten Pound Island only. Children will also haul one lobster trap and officers will teach the children how the lobster trap works. Everyone is welcome to sign up, but preference will be given to children who have never experienced fishing or boating before. You can sign up by visiting (in person) at the Community Impact Unit inside Browns Mall.

Gloucester residents only, three children per fishing trip. Trips will last two hours. Weather permitting first trip Monday July 19th two groups;10am and 12pm noon, pick up and drop off from the Harbormaster’s Office. Mass Division of Marine fisheries will be supplying junior fishing log books and educational materials.Deadline to sign up for our maiden voyage is this Thursday July 15th by noon, we will randomly choose three children for each trip Friday July 16th at noon via random wheel on Facebook live. More trips to follow.
