I realize coyote sightings are not uncommon, but this was our first close coyote encounter. We watched this coyote for several minutes navigate the ice, have a rest and a drink then move on its way. We were in the vicinity of the Klondike water treatment facility. The coyote seemed relaxed, though I was a little nervous.

As a Northeast Storm is beginning, we have just come off a busy weekend of waves, wildlife and mystery. The waves were swells parading in with beautiful sunlight. The birds and animals followed their near-regular routines. And unusual things were going on at Niles Pond.

Michael Cronin piece in today’s Gloucester Daily Times, “Long Beach seawall to be replaced: Rockport must pay 25% of $2.6M Long Beach project”- here

ROCKPORTย โ Work to replaceย more than 400 feet of Long Beach’s dilapidated seawall is expected to start next year.
Theย Federalย Emergency Managementย Agencyย announced last month it willย cover 75% of the project’s estimated $2,580,000ย costย through Public Assistance Program funding via theย Massachusetts Emergency Managementย Agencyย “to reconstruct a seawall, revetment, and beachย access stairs.”ย
“The 25% matching funds will need to be approved at Town Meeting,” said Rockportย Public Works Director Joe Parisi. “It will be included in anย article at this spring’s Town Meeting.”
From there, the town will pursue hiring a construction company to do the work. Parisi said design and permitting would begin this year and construction will most likely start in 2022.

cute little digger racing the tide- see BEAT THE CLOCK | ADDING SAND TO SHORE UP LONG BEACH ANDย SEAWALL posted onย ย

The sand came by rail from NH then by truck (carted by Bentley Warren trucking, Ipswich). The staging was from the Gloucester edge.

I find the annual sand migration on Long Beach a fascinating natural mystery. Itโs dramatic every year.ย

PARKING BAN
A snow emergency parking ban will be in effect beginning today at 2 PM, Monday, February 1, and will remain in effect until further notice due to an upcoming winter storm expected to bring heavy wet snow, gusty winds and minor coastal flooding later today through tomorrow.
Parking is available at all municipal and school parking lots but it is at your own risk. Due to the possibility of minor coastal flooding parking will not be available in the lower lot at Gloucester High School.
The City of Gloucester will give residents ample notice when the parking ban is rescinded to allow for the removal of cars from off street parking areas before parking enforcement teams will begin ticketing and towing.
All residents and businesses are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at, or, near your homes, and please check on your elderly and disabled. Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.
TRASH AND RECYCLING COLLECTION
Trash will not be collected tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2. Trash collection will resume on Wednesday, February 3 and operate on a holiday schedule/one-day delay the rest of the week.

POWER OUTAGES
National Grid has been preparing for power outages in different areas across the North Shore, including Gloucester. If any outages do occur in your area, it is imperative that they be reported via the National Grid Customer Service or Outage Reporting phone lines as listed below. Every outage phone call that we receive is logged into our outage tracking system and better enables us to pinpoint the location of the issue. The sooner National Grid can identify the location of the issue, the quicker a response can be sent.
