Quote of the Week

Every gun that is made, every waIkership launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

Dwight D Eisenhower (1890 – 1969)

Born in Texas and raised in Kansas, Ike was the 34th President of the United States after having risen through the ranks of the Army to be the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces during the Second World War. He is generally credited with having planned the successful invasions of Nazi-held North Africa and later Normandy and the battle for Europe. Although not highly political, he ran for President as a Republican, defeating the isolationist Robert Taft who wanted to end American participation in NATO, of which Eisenhower was Commander. He beat Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 general election by a landslide, repeating the feat in 1956.  Domestically conservative, he none-the-less successfully opposed McCarthyism, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and paved the way for the massive Interstate Highway System, which is named in his honor. As he left the presidency in 1961 he famously inveighed against the “military-industrial complex” coining the term. The above quote from the most powerful soldier of the 20th century was uttered eight years earlier in a speech following the death of Stalin.

THE HOUSE BUILT OF SPITE

Pink house, pink cloud squiggles, pink marsh sea –

The lonely pink house of Plum Island’s Great Marsh is today only visited by hawks and Snowy Owls perching to scan the surrounding vista for their next meal.

Local lore has it that the house was built in 1922 by a couple who were in the process of divorcing and sorting their affairs. The wife asked that the husband build a replica of their Newburyport family home. She did not say where the house was to be sited. Out of spite, he built the house atop the isolated salt marsh, with only saltwater plumbing.

The Pink House has not been occupied since the early 2000s and looks worse with each passing year. Last winter I was at the refuge for a program held at the PRNWR headquarters. After the event I tried to drive towards Plum Island but with sea water gushing in from the marsh, the road in front of the house was flooded and much too dangerous to travel.

The house is FREE, if only you will either take it off the marsh or give Parker River National Wildlife Refuge a few acres of comparable land. The second option allows for the house to stay in its current location. Read more here: Free Pink House of Newbury: Take Me I’m Yours

Both shows are ideal context for the camp’s theme: “Imagine and create new worlds!”

Hawk Guarding Lunch

I was taking pictures at Fort Square when Bobby (“from down the Fort” or “down the beach” as he described himself) tipped me off that a hawk had caught a rabbit nearby.  He noted there are a lot of rabbits down there, but it’s obvious that now there is one less. Thanks Bobby!
