MONARCHS AND LADIES – LAST OF THE SEASON’S BUTTERFLIES

While releasing the last Monarchs of the season with Charlotte, one landed on her hair and stayed for few moments, just long enough to catch a minute of footage and to take a photo.

Thank you to Patti Papows for our little straggler. Patti’s chrysalis was attached to a plant in her garden, an aster, which had lost all its leaves. She was worried a predator might eat it, so we scooped up the chrysalis and placed it in a terrarium at my home, where the butterfly emerged on October 17.

Will these last of the season’s Monarchs that are migrating along the Atlantic Coast make it to Mexico? Some will follow a path along the coastline, where when they reach the Delaware Bay, winds will begin to funnel them towards Mexico, between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. Some will continue on down the coast all the way to Florida. Some of these Atlantic Coast Monarchs will live their days out in Florida, and some will cross the Gulf of Mexico on their journey to Mexico.

Please join me on Wednesday, November 7th, from 1:00 to 5:00pm where I am one of three presenters for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society at Elm Bank. I hope to see you there!

Discover new ways to garden, and new plants to select to make your home more sustainable in three presentations that address methods and plantings that you can adopt to improve your local environment and welcome more wildlife to your gardens. Presentations will review methods of ecological landscaping, introduce you to native shrubs, and share what you can plant to support pollinators.

Pete Frates’ “Pete’s Park”

“A Place for All”

I was so happy to have been at the Ribbon Cutting for the new Pete’s Park in Beverly this past Friday. The playground that Pete Frates grew up playing on has been rejuvenated and redesigned to be accessible to all and is really amazing. In addition to the Frates family, friends, sponsors, neighbors and more….also in attendance were Mayor Cahill, Governor Baker, Ray Bourke, and the brand new 2018 World Series Trophy.

Quite a line up to celebrate quite a collaboration….and an amazing guy.

This collaboration, in fact, began three years ago and the list of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and those who gave of time and talent is impressive.  From the sports courts in Pete’s Boston College’s Maroon and Gold to the blue fish painted to indicate the accessible paths throughout the park….from the unbelievable basketball hoops to the custom built boat, the Lucy Fitz, this park has it all.  It is truly gorgeous and speaks to how much love exists for Pete and the Frates family while also emphasizing their goal of creating a family friendly space for everyone!

Congratulations to all who worked so hard and gave so much.  You hit it out of the park….as one of the speakers said, “for Pete’s sake.”

St. Peter’s Square on a Gray Day

Taking a look around the square on a dreary day, I notice there is still beauty everywhere I look.

I hope you have or will vote. I used to believe my vote did not matter too much, but recent events have proven me wrong on that count. I’ll be driving 5 hours to cast my vote…that’s how important I believe it to be.  Now getting off my soapbox…….

Keep in mind that your National Grid bill is divided into two sets of charges, one for supply and one for delivery. The Gloucester CEA program will only impact the supply portion of your bill. This is identified on your National Grid bill under Supply Services. The program does not affect the delivery or transmission portions of your bill which are substantial. Additionally, summer rates have been historically lower than winter rates. For example, the National Grid residential rate for summer 2018 was 10.87 cents/kWh.
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF SAVINGS

The primary intent of the program is to provide price stability and savings over the duration of the 36-month term. National Grid’s rates for electric supply change every six months for Residential and Small Commercial customers and every three months for Industrial customers. Thus, National Grid…
