About the festival

The Motif No.1 Day Festival celebrates Rockport across the arts.

M1D honors the fishing shack, artist’s studio, and tourist attraction that started it all: an old building right on one of Rockport’s historic wharves, a building painted so often by artists at the turn of the last century that it was given the nickname Motif No.1.

Featuring film, poetry, dance, music, art-making activities, historical presentations and more, along with the Motif No.1 Day 5k and Fun Run, with proceeds to benefit Rockport Public Schools’ wellness initiatives, M1D is a festival with something for everyone.

Seaside Garden Club Auction Thank You

The Seaside Garden Club’s annual auction was a huge success this year!  A nice crowd filled the Manchester Community Center on Tuesday, May 9th for a chance to bid on the many items. A plant sale was added this year and preceded the auction.

Many wonderful donations contributed to the success of the auction.  Local businesses, including Ryan & Wood Distilleries, Brick End Farms, Sea Meadow Gifts, Neptune’s Harvest and Talbot’s donated generously to the auction.  Among the items generating heavy bidding was mulch donated by Pallazola Brothers Landscaping, hand crafted Garden Art pieces and beautiful hanging baskets from Marshall’s Farm Stand, Wolf Hill and Marini Farms.

Many other businesses donated beautiful plant material, including HerbFARMacy, Gordon’s Florist, Asbury Gardens, and Chapman’s Greenhouse/Juel Gifts.  The donated plant material complemented the many large healthy perennials from our members’ gardens.

The crowd will be dining out this summer on the gift certificates…

If you’re not friends with Bing McGilvray on Facebook and you love Cape Ann artists, then you should be. He is always posting gorgeous paintings of our community such as “Joan of Arc” (1932), painted by J. Jeffrey Grant (1888 -1960). Bing is an archivist at the Cape Ann Museum.

Don’t you love the trees? Did you know Gloucester was formerly a “tree city?”

GHS Senior Marcos Trejo Nationally Recognized

We are pleased to announce that the following student has earned a National Silver Medal in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2017. Gloucester High School Senior, Marcos Trejo has been recognized for his photographic work titled New Proyect. Marcos has been identified by panels of creative professionals as one of the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. This year, more the 300,000 works of art and writing were submitted.  Only the top 1% were recognized at the national level.

Please congratulate Marcos if you see him.

Governor Baker heads back to New Bedford for the reopening of the Seamen’s Bethel and Mariner’s Home. They’ll announce the 10th anniversary of the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund.

Essex Heritage is hosting their Annual Spring Meeting on Thursday, May 18, from 8 – 10 AM, at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall. “The agenda will include updates on current initiatives, the announcement of the Essex Heritage Partnership Grant recipients, and more!”  They are always kind to Gloucester and the Great Organ at the music hall is amazing.

The 2017 Massachusetts Smart Growth annual Conference is taking place in the DCU Center, Worcester, for the second year in a row.

I want this conference to come to Beauport Hotel next year.

Testifying at the State House in support of Great Neighborhoods Bill- artists, seniors, housing

On May 2nd I joined people across the state who were asked to testify before the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government in support of the Great Neighborhoods Bill. Partners for the bill include Ma Smart Growth, The Trustees of Reservations, Mass Audubon, and MAPC. I was speaking about artists, seniors and live/work space, accessory apartments and multi family housing. I’ve never testified at the State House before, though I’ve been there often for events and art visits. The last time I went to the State House was when I went with Fred Bodin. This day was a long hearing, so much so it required a move to continue. The entire building was brimming with impressive hearings. It was fascinating to hear the testimonies and see the committee members in action. They don’t want anyone leaving MA!

Good Harbor Beach inspires 1972 Chevrolet Blazer Building a better way to see the USA tagline

“72 Chevy Blazer. Because the good places start where the good roads end”

Well, yeah. At Good Harbor Beach, Gloucester, MA.

Vintage ad  with Chevy trucks Oh and people on a picnic probably atop piping plover nests. Now we know better…Anyhow, this creative campaign was inspired by the Bass Rocks motif with that iconic Edgar J Sherman house on Sherman’s Point, parts bolted down nearly a century by then. I like the green truck’s wheel tucked in with the gang.
