If you’re not friends with Bing McGilvray on Facebook and you love Cape Ann artists, then you should be. He is always posting gorgeous paintings of our community such as “Joan of Arc” (1932), painted by J. Jeffrey Grant (1888 -1960). Bing is an archivist at the Cape Ann Museum.
Don’t you love the trees? Did you know Gloucester was formerly a “tree city?”

Hi Kim,
Gloucester was a Tree City USA for many years while John Alto was tree warden. He protected all our trees but was very protective of the Purple Beech trees on the Sawyer Free Library property. When they were planning the last expansion of the library he fought very hard to keep them from cutting them down. I am very nervous that the next expansion will do them in without our protection!!!
That is why the Girl Scouts of East Gloucester petitioned the city council to rename the park on the corner of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Moorland Road, John Alto Park.

Thank you Gloria for that great bit of information. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Alto, a true gentleman and caring person.

Thanks Kim. This painting is in the Cape Ann Museum collection. Not sure if it’s hanging right now but it often is!
