Essex National Heritage is celebrating their 20th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, Essex Heritage is recognizing organizations and people that make the Essex National Heritage Area (Essex County) so exceptional.

Much, much to my delighted surprise, I have been nominated as an Essex Heritage Trailblazer in the second category, Connecting People to Place. The 130 nominees are all stellar and most are businesses and very large organizations, for example, the Peabody Essex Museum, Mass Audubon (statewide), and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, so it is really quite an honor to be nominated. I think GMG could have been nominated for all our work collectively but I am of course grateful for the nomination.

Former Poet Laureate John Ronan at the Cape Ann Museum

Love, language and community.

 The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to welcome Gloucester’s former poet laureate, John Ronan on Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 p.m. to discuss his most recent book of poetry, Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown (Backwaters Press, 2017), including its connections to Gloucester with “Good Harbor, Home,” which was written for and read at John Bell’s first inauguration as Mayor of Gloucester. Through Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown Ronan hopes to convey that love and language create community.

John Ronan is a poet, playwright, movie producer and journalist. He has received national honors for his poetry and is a former National Endowment for the Arts Fellow, Ucross Fellow, Bread Loaf Scholar and Poet Laureate of Gloucester, MA. In 2010, his volume of poetry, Marrowbone Lane, won Highly Recommended honors from the Boston Authors Club. As a playwright, Ronan’s works include The Yeats Game and The Early Bird Special. John is also founder of the media production company American Storyboard, a teacher of film and host of Cape Ann Television’s The Writer’s Block with John J. Ronan which celebrates its 27th anniversary in the 2016–2017 seasons.

PUPPETRY CLASSES at the Cape Ann Cinema & Stage!

CHILDREN’ PUPPETRY WORKSHOPS
(ages 6-12)
Teaching puppetry skills of puppet & script creation, dramatization, performance. Each of 5 weekly sessions focus on one style of puppetry (hand puppet, mask, shadow, clay/toy theatre, & marionette) and one world region. The last day of each block offers a free performance to the community by the children and the master.

Saturday mornings, 10:00am to 11:30am,
next session begins March 4

COST: $60/child in advance or $15/class drop-in
(if space is available).

PRESCHOOL PUPPET PLAYTIME
(ages 2-6)
In 5 weekly one-hour sessions, children will be engaged by various dazzling tales from around the world as they come alive through participatory puppetry and theme-expressive arts activities such as finger plays, craft, games, folkdance and percussion. (All children must be accompanied by a caregiver.)

Wednesday mornings, 10:30am to 11:30 am,
next session begins March 1

THE WORLD FAMILY PUPPET THEATRE offers exciting school year puppetry arts programs. Participants bring alive the folktales of the worlds’ peoples thus learning valuable lessons of getting along. This program model has been refined from 38 years of multicultural arts programs for children. Time travel to a land or time far away, experience world kinship, compassion, lifelong positive problem-solving, while making new friends!

Hey! I’m gonna “retire” this week. No, not from playing music, but from all the suffering brought on by the sweat, the boils, and the tears of being a working class hero. Yes, I’m officially retiring! Who cares!! It’s not like anything else is changing.
So, I’m bringing in some of my loyal friends to help me cerebrate. First, there’s Mr.Paul F’oss of Bangor Me.,my Secretary of the Exterior who’s gonna manipulate his Emmenne Organ® and push for olive oil exploration in Maine. Nexxt, Mr. Bill Cunniff, former Rockport-o-rican whizzes in from Baltimore as Sec’y of States of Consiousness to help out on glitar doodies. He’s bringing a bunch of little plastic bags….. Mr. Steve “Silvertone” Coveny , Sec’y of Libel, hitchhikes in from Peabody to sing and play grueling catarrh. All held together by that kool kat of Ipswich, Mr. Dave Moore, my newest favorite Drummer. This is going to be dangerous, as you’ll have to listen to me sing most of the night. C’mon out and enjoy the spring-like weather.

Leigh Slingluff show at Lone Gull Coffeehouse until February 28th

Lone Gull Coffeeshop 146 Main Street, Gloucester, MA, stands out with local art. Two dynamite mini solo shows are currently on view:

One exhibit features 20 oil paintings, acrylic paintings and gouache drawings by fine artist, Leigh Slingluff. Slingluff works on Cape Ann and resides in Rockport. You may have seen her award-winning painting on exhibit during Cape Ann Plein Air or in the seArts Art Loan @Bass Rocks annual exhibit.

Lone Gull maintains a sign up sheet for 2 featured art exhibits monthly. They have begun booking into 2018 (although scattered months with 1 wall may still be available)

Pick #1:  Maple Sugaring at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

Tours at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm

Adults: $10 and children over 3: $8

Spring celebrations begin early at the sanctuary with the age-old tradition of maple sugaring. The warm days of late winter awaken the flow of sap in the maples, causing buds to swell and resulting in sweet-smelling, billowing clouds of steam rising from the sugarhouse.

On our naturalist-guided tours, learn how to identify a sugar maple, observe tapping and sap collection methods, watch the sap being boiled down in the sugarhouse, and get a sweet taste of the final product. Afterwards, warm up by the woodstove in the Barn, where hot beverages, hot dogs cooked in maple sap, and delicious soups and desserts made by our volunteers are available for purchase.

Visit our gift shop to browse a selection of maple products, and be sure to bring home a bottle of our own freshly-made maple syrup.

Tours last about an hour and run in all weather. Dress warmly and wear warm waterproof boots because the walk is entirely outdoors.

And This Is Why We Shouldn’t Drink When We Tape The HomieCast- We Agree To Crazy Shit

So DeWolfe somehow got all us on the HomieCast to agree to do Crossfit Saturday morning.  Normally in the middle of the summer when I’ve been active I wouldn’t be too concerned.  But I’m literally so tight I can barely walk.  #prayforthehomiecast

It’s time for the Homiecast men to man up! During the most recent Homiecast , the guys were called out by Crossfit coach Chris DeWolfe.
Joey, James and Craig all agreed to try out the Community workout that Crossfit Cape Ann offers at 9am every Saturday morning. The cost is only $5 per person and all the proceeds are donated back into community. Coach Chris is holding them to their word! Join the Homiecast at CFCA for what should be a fun and exciting hour! Must be
18 years or older.
