Who is in the Know?

We mentioned the other day on the most recent podcast (from the gorgeous new Beauport Hotel) that a new restaurant is coming to Rockport.

The Feather & Wedge Restaurant and Bar (happy dance) is scheduled to open sometime this summer.  I honestly don’t know a thing about it.  Who can fill us in?  I’d love to know more!

BEAUPORT HOTEL RESTAURANT PREVIEW AND OPENING TONIGHT!

13015475_1747573392154051_4706416384412570641_n

Last night I treated my husband Tom to a delicious dinner at the brand new Beauport Hotel’s fantastic restaurant “1606 at Beauport.” Usually he takes me, but I wanted to do something special for him. He helps me so much in myriad projects, but especially these past few months getting client’s gardens underway for the season. If you are looking for a special place to take a friend or loved one, along with a fresh and fabulous dining experience, head straight to 1606 at Beauport; you won’t disappointed!

The service was simply outstanding. Dorothy, the hostess was friendly and welcoming, as was our waitress Nicole. The nautically inspired decor reflects the heritage and spirit of Gloucester and each table appears to have a panoramic view of the water. For larger groups, the deep marine blue leather upholstered semi-circular banquettes looked wonderfully cozy and inviting.

Guests are invited to order from either menu, the fine dining menu and/or the tavern menu. Every entree and appetizer on both menus looked very enticing and it was very difficult to choose. Tom had the tomato soup (rich and flavorful of sun ripened tomatoes) and swordfish served on a bed of mushroom risotto and pesto crème fraîche. The cut of swordfish was nearly two inches thick and cooked perfectly, browned on the outside and sweet and tender inside. I had the very super delicious organic field greens salad with maple glazed pecans and goat cheese and without a doubt, is a new favorite. My mussels were served in a tasty saffron broth–every bite, plump, juicy, and delicious.

I am crazy about crème brûlée and try it where ever we go. Chef Bates Walsh’s does not disappoint, with a touch of expresso flavoring and the perfect ratio of custard to caramel! The exquisite food, welcoming staff, and lovely decor made for an utterly delightful evening.

Bird Mancini and T Max at the Cultural Center

bird mancini and T Max_Beatles

T Max has become a well known fixture here in Gloucester, and many of you may have caught great performances by Bird Mancini during Nights on the Neck in years past, or at their prior Beatles performance with T Max at the Cultural Center. Great musicians and a performance you can’t help but reminisce and move to.

A big thank you to all who came out to our Open House!  As many of you know, the Gloucester Biotechnology Academy recently moved to its new facility at 55 Blackburn Center and held an Open House on May 26th.  It was a wonderful event, made possible by the participation of many new and existing friends, enrolled students and their families, local high school and college instructors, and neighbors who wanted to see how the new space turned out after 6 months of renovation. The party lasted for 3 hours, and was a terrific celebration of the new facility and Biotech Academy.

If you were not able to attend the Open House and would still like to take a tour and/or learn more about the Gloucester Biotechnology Academy or Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, please email us:  info@gmgi.org

Fish Tales – Call for Story Tellers

The Gloucester Writers Center’s live story telling program Fish Tales is looking for storytellers for the upcoming show on Friday, July 8th, 7:30 PM at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center.

The theme is Play Ball! Stories about baseball and related topics, but other ideas will be considered. Please get in touch with Maureen Aylward (maureenaylward@comcast.net) if you have a story to tell. Don’t delay, only a few spots left in the line up.

Fish Tales Storyteller Guidelines

  • Stories should be true and from the personal experience of the storyteller.
  • Stories must be stories, not personal narratives about a subject/theme.
  • Stories are most effective if told without reading a script. If this seems difficult, make an outline and tell the story to the mirror a few times, then try it without the outline. Experience tells us that a story that is told and not read has greater lasting power.
  • Stories must be five minutes. Keep an eye on the time keeper who will signal when you are approaching the end of your time. In some venues we only have 1 hour for the show so your help is appreciated in keeping to the 5 minute limit.
  • Storytellers who are far over the 5 minute timeline will not be included in the final cut of our film that appears on Cape Ann TV and posted on the GWC website.
  • Arrive at the venue ten minutes before the start time to find out where you are in the line-up and to get comfortable.

Cityside view from The Beauport

While we all love the ocean views that attract tourists to the newly opened Beauport Hotel, it’s THIS view that speaks to me the most.  The “Cityside” view is what I’ve seen growing up all my life.  A view that speaks of a hard working, loving community of my family, friends and neighbors!
