Why Are Harley Motorcycles Called Hogs?

The term “hog” has been associated with Harley-Davidson motorcycles since the early 1920s. Many businesses like Hula-Hogs in Maui, Hawaii, and Hogs-R-Us in Cork, Ireland, draw business based on this association.
Harley’s Racing Mascot
- Harley-Davidson has a long and rich history in motorcycle racing. According to Missy Scott, author of “Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company,” a team of farm boys who raced professionally for Harley-Davidson was affectionately known as the “hog boys” and used a pet pig as a mascot. After each win, one of the team members would carry the pig with him on the victory lap.
Harley’s Owners Group (H.O.G.)
- Harley’s Owners Group (H.O.G.) began in 1983. The acronym “hog” was adopted to commemorate Harley’s racing history. It has since become the world’s largest motorcycle club, boasting more than 1,400 chapters around the world. A one-year membership subscription is free with the purchase of a new Harley.
Hogs Today
- Although associated with Harley-Davidson, any custom motorcycle can be considered a hog. According to the authors of “The Legal Environment of Business,” the term “hog” is generic. It has been applied to large motorcycles since 1935 and hence cannot be trademarked by Harley-Davidson.

The Event You’ve Been Waiting All Winter For!
Sailor Stan’s will be reopening tomorrow (Saturday) at 7:00am, and Sunday too. Just weekends for now, but that’s when most people probably want to go break their fast on the Neck this time of year. Karen Roberts has been working all winter on her beautiful and very affordable sea glass jewelry, and will have some on display. Wayne has been busy at work painting all winter, as you can see from this colorful, iris-filled beauty of Sailor Stan’s. Spring is Here! Come on down the Neck.
It is also the final weekend of the Rocky Neck Now exhibit at the Cultural Center, so get some eats and take in some art. I’ll be gallery sitting from 2-4 on Saturday, so stop in and say hi. The closing reception for the show will be Sunday from 2-4. Elynn Kroger Gallery is open, as is John Nesta, and possibly Side Street too.

The next step will be to place a conservation restriction on the land that will protect it and preserve it in perpetuity for the benefit of all forever.
Save Our Shores Gloucester thanks all of those who provided financial support, contributed time to attend meetings and donated supplies and materials to make this effort so successful.
On Friday, May 6, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the site to celebrate victory over development along the Back Shore, a spot revered by so many people from Gloucester, and from many places around the globe.
Thanks to Marilyn Hyde, realtor extraordinaire, for her help in securing this property.

public art: 6 Days until Poem in Your Pocket Day
Since National Poem in Your Pocket Day falls on April 21 this year–during school vacation–here are a couple local reminders from two libraries:
From Valerie Marino at Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library: “Attached is a photo of our poetry display: “Take a poem, leave a poem”. There are copies of poems in the basket, most by local poets (Lisa Manning, Tom Revson, Gwen Carr, Vincent Ferrini and Charles Olson); everyone is encouraged to take a poem or leave one – (an original or one special to them). We will gladly make copies so many people can enjoy them!”
At TOHP Burnham Public Library in Essex you can pick a poem from the library’s poem tree to read to friends and family. On the 21st they have planned a special evening of poetry for all including local poets Kent Bowker, Karin Gertsch, and former Gloucester Poet Laureate, Rufus Collinson. Reminder: the library has temporarily moved out of the Town Hall and is open at 245 Western Avenue.
Poem in Your Pocket Day is everyday for some people, like my friend’s quiet poem tucking at Duckworths. I bet an FOB found one.

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Fire Department, with assistance from doctors at Addison Gilbert Hospital, saved a man’s life who went into cardiac arrest by employing the revolutionary LUCAS 2 Chest Compression System — setting the record for the longest continual usage of the device in Massachusetts and New England.
“This is an extremely unique situation given the duration the LUCAS device was used. Through the miraculous high quality of care, advanced tools and science, this man was able to return home to his family,” Chief Smith said. “Everyone, from the public, to police, fire and doctors, worked as a team to provide the best possible care available. It demonstrates a true commitment to one another, our residents and community as a whole.”

One of my favorite ever changing views is from the Stone Pier looking up toward the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge. It’s beautiful early in the morning just after the sun rises when the egrets and blue herons are having breakfast. The Pier has just as pretty a view on a summer night with the glowing sun illuminating the three red dories that are usually moored to the left of the stone pier. Hope everyone has a fantastic Friday!!

And We’re Off
As I write this, it is 10:00 p.m Thursday night…when it posts, it’ll be 9:00 a.m. Friday morning. By then (which will be now to you), if all goes as planned, we should be out of Massachusetts, through Connecticut, past New York, and hopefully even out of New Jersey. On our way, of course, to Florida.
Sure, flying would be easier…and faster. But, flying a family of four to Orlando over a school vacation week has gotten ridiculously expensive. It would be easy to say that was the only reason we’re driving, but…truth be told…I also kind of enjoy it.
We drove to Florida each and every year when I was a child. While my parents may remember those days differently, I have nothing but fond memories of those trips. Of course, back then, there were no car seats or even seat belts. We built forts out of suitcases in the back of the family station wagon and slept a good part of the way. Of course, back then, there were also no iPads, portable DVD players, or even cell phones. In some ways the trip was probably easier. In lots of ways the trip was much more difficult. No packing of electronics….and chargers for all of those electronics. No GPS….just giant bulky road maps…that no one in the world knows how to fold back up into their original neat package. Pros…cons. Who knows?
Either way, what hasn’t change, is that we’re looking at a whole lot of Forced Family Fun in the car for 24 hours. Typically, my boys are up for an adventure and thrive on the go. Road trips are usually exciting and they are good sports who make the most of it. I am not naive enough to think that will necessarily be the case this time, but one can hope.
Wish us luck. We’ll keep you posted (because nowadays…unlike back then…blogging is a thing and I can). With love, from somewhere on 95 South, en route to the Sunshine State.
