Cold wave hits South Korea, Warning for Seoul, Flights cancelled at Jeju
    4:58 PM MMT, Sun January 24, 2016
A cold snap hit South Korea on Sunday with the temperature in Seoul falling to minus 18 Celsius degrees. South Korea’s meteorological administration said on Saturday afternoon it had issued a cold warning for Seoul for the first time in five years. The weather agency issues the cold warning when the lowest morning temperature is expected to be below minus 15 Celsius degrees for two or more days. The temperature dropped to minus 16 Celsius degree on Saturday, five degrees lower than on Friday. People in Seoul were bundled up to face the sudden cold snap. Yang Sun-mi …”It’s freezing cold today. I think the temperature is lower than yesterday. I hope it gets warmer tomorrow”.

Lim Byung-do … “I came out for a date because it’s Sunday but the weather forecast said the wind chill equivalent temperature for today fell to minus 23 Celsius degrees and there is a cold weather alert for the first time in years. I should quickly get to a warm place”.

On the same day, flights at the airport on the South Korean holiday island of Jeju were halted for a second day due to the biggest snowfall and high winds, forcing hundreds of cancellations, officials said. On Saturday, according to Korea Airports Corp, 296 flights were cancelled and 122 delayed. All 517 flights scheduled for Sunday and around 60 flights scheduled for Monday morning were cancelled. Jeju recorded its biggest snowfall in 32 years at 4.33 inches as of Sunday, with more than 1 metre of snow in mountain areas.
