  1. I remember going to the YMCA camp that they had think in West Gloucester had cabins out in the woods and marshes. I remember well too! I got a bit went during the capture the flag sort of hit the soft spot in the marsh down ye Dave went sort of like swallowed up…Never did get flag. Remember the camp leader for our cabin his name was (Rusty) can remember last name…great summer in 1960’s lot’s of field trips too 🙂 Dave

  2. Although the thoughtful and compelling opinions are for moving the Y to the mall , I feel badly as our ever struggling Main Street sees another icon of downtown community vanish. The Y for all its ambition is not a country club and has been the benefactor of all kinds community monies and philanthropy, the actual land of the current Y was a gift from the church and volunteers have played a tremendous part in its history serving the people of Gloucester.
The mission of the Y is to offer wonderful programs to the citizens of Gloucester which it does, as a member who goes almost every day I have never been denied an opportunity to work out and have wonderful interaction there with friends and neighbors. We then spread out thru the town with lunches , other volunteer projects(our class does at the Harvest Meal at the church after class)and shopping. The programs are top notch and although the facility is not as grand as the mega Y in Marblehead or Beverly I believe it s location in our downtown has significant impact to the community as a whole. The “Mallification” of America may solve a parking problem but the unintended consequences have ruined many Main Streets.
