I have been missing his presence here recently and have been following his journey from a distance. I enjoyed the time I have spent in his shop and will miss his posts. Rest in peace.
I am so sorry to see this. I am just stunned. Though I know he had not been well, and was on his ninth life in the past few years, I thought he was improving more and more as time went on, he certainly fought the good fight. He will be missed. What a loss for this community.
So very sorry to hear this. Gloucester and Main St. won’t be the same without him. His shop was always my first stop on visits home. He and I spoke privately about our health struggles and I told him he was an inspiration to me to never lose hope or a sense of humor. I will remember him on good days and bad. Thank you for your kindness Fred. RIP
So sorry to hear. I will miss visiting him at his shop, hearing about local news, and seeing all the wonderful photographs. ‘Peace and comfort’ to he and his family.
Fred, what a kind soul, hard worker, community focused neighbor, and Gloucester legend. He was simply a damn good man. He brought joy to thousands that strolled into his store, admired his photos, and quickly became friends with. One of the blogs finest friends and contributers. We love you Fred, enjoy the sailing.
Can you hear Fred Bodin’s voice in your head right now? He had that kind of voice. Always so even keeled, the same lilt to it that was a joy to listen to. It is crushing that he is gone, we can no longer hear that voice but his pain as of last night is gone. Janet and Fred endured the worst life has to offer in a short time. But both were shining stars of what we all hope we all could be.
RIP Fred. You were, and are a special piece of Cape Ann I will always think of as I make my way through West End or catch a keeper.
I was fortunate enough to get to know Fred also fortunate to have stopped by with “his dog, Pip” before we left town, just a few days before he left us. How I’ll miss him and stopping in the shop for a few laughs.
Your Pal Val
I have know Fred for many years, and can remember so many great visits that Phil and I had with Fred in his gallery. I am so sad I lost my friend. Janet, my thoughts are with you now.
I am so sorry to hear this news. Fred was such a wonderful person, and he fought so long and hard. I will always fondly remember how seriously he took his responsibilities as a mug up Bloody Mary competition judge, the great times everyone had when he hosted the GMG Christmas parties, and how excited he was when Joey invited him to become a GMG contributor. He was always a joy to stop and visit with at his gallery. Such a loss.
Chuck and I had the good fortune to become friends with Fred on our annual visits to Gloucester. I have very fond memories of Fred and Janet coming over for a southern “comfort meal” last September and enjoying wine, conversation, and laughs. He took one of the most gorgeous pictures of a Gloucester sunset over the harbor that evening. My picture paled in comparison. He was good! Earlier we had gone out to the Fort to catch a good picture of the Eagle as it entered the harbor. What a trooper he was to get in the best position in spite of the physical challenges and his weakened state. He was so full of stories and humor. It is hard for me to imagine Gloucester without him. Oh, how we will miss him! Wish we could be there Sunday for the memorial. As luck would have it, I am to arrive Wednesday for a scheduled visit if I can get out of Florida (storm Erika). I’ll say goodbye from the pier. Heaven has definitely gained one of the best but I am sad not to see him.
saint707 ~ so glad to have met you last year in Fred’s shop ~ enjoying the excitement of Schooner week.
I too remember and honor Fred for doing all he could with thoughtful kindness and conversation to each of us as we walked through his door. I hope you make it to the dock on Sunday ~ please send a wave for me ~ Mary ~
I’m so sad to hear this news today. I’m glad to have known him. I brought him some meatballs and he said he was doing fine because of kind people like me. Phew! I’m so sad.
So sorry to hear the news. Fred’s shop, work and persona were a triple treat. Cancer is cruel and takes no pity on any man, regardless of his goodness. RIP.
It is such sad news. Fred will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of being with him if only briefly. He lead life fully with humor and grace. Rest in peace Fred.
My cousin Fred, his sister Barbara, my sister and myself grew up together as kids on Long Island. He was a great cousin and person and I looked up to him. We lost touch in our adult life but he was always loved and he will always be remembered as my cuz! Rest in peace my dear cuz, you will be missed by many.
Fred – Was a fighter and fought his battle like a true warrior with grace, humbleness! Your presence will always be felt by me inside for the wisdom and spirit you shared, memories, will miss you greatly. Save a place for me & Kim at the cove in the sky! Fred, family and friends you have touched!
Music for the spirit and soul take it with you on your next journey walking with the wind and sun!! God Bless Dave 😦 & Kim:-(

I’m shocked and saddened to hear this news. I’d visited Bodin Historic Photo a few times before he became ill. I followed his health updates on GMG, and his posts on Facebook. I was under the impression as many probably were that he wasn’t going anywhere any time soon…
He was a wonderful contributor to GMG. RIP Fred.
Pod Cast 149 God Bless and excellent honor for Fred!!! 🙂 Dave & Kim 🙂
This is to both Fred and GMG below from my and Kim’s heart!!!
