Alan Watts Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone.”

Alan Watts  (1915-1973)

Born in Britain, philosopher and theologian Alan Watts moved to the US in the thirties, attending Episcopal seminary while at the same time receiving training in Zen Buddhism. He served briefly as a priest but left the church to pursue a career as a teacher, writer, and lecturer. His bestselling 1957 book The Way of Zen was one of more than two dozen he wrote on spirituality, religion and consciousness. Many of his brilliant lectures are available on the web and as an Iphone app, and focus on the idea that we are not separate from the universe which surrounds us.

  1. Watts’ full quote, according to a couple different websites, is pasted below. It’s more nuanced, and only a few words longer. But it probably would not fit on a bumper sticker or in a Tweet.

“Furthermore, as muddy water is best cleared by leaving it alone, it could be argued that those who sit quietly and do nothing are making one of the best possible contributions to a world in turmoil.”
