Fisher Cat In Ipswich Photo From Mike Doody

Joey on the way to work from Ipswich this morning I saw this lying beside the road near Foote Bros Canoe and as I went by new it was the elusive Fisher Cat. I turned around to go back and grab a quick photo as did another driver who told me he lost six of his chickens over the weekend likely by the same animal.  Living in Ipswich I have heard them at night and have also caught a glimsp of one or two. Thought you would like. Have to work on the photography skills though.

  1. Back in the mid-1950s friends and I hunted Snowshoe Hare in Winter along the brook that paralells the Manchester-Essex road. Not infrequently our dogs would trail a Fisher from Manchester, along the brook and onto the Essex marshes where they always lost the scent. Occasionally, we would see the fishers. With snow on the ground, we could follow the trail and see where the Fisher had circled around and watched the hounds go by, then headed off in a different direction. They were very smart animals. Eventually, the hounds would sort out their trail but, by the time they reached the marshes, they were usually eshausted if there was snow on the ground.

  2. Bill pegged it very in his post! Close to breeding time and where there are squirrel’s and chickens too – they are pretty elusive normally back then 60’s…I saw a couple in the woods close to young’s farm – a few times – if they get into the chicken coop the alarm will be sounding (Chickens and Roosters)… Dave 🙂
