Life Itself at 9pm Tonight on CNN

Sometimes, life is hard. I’ve been feeling that way for the last five days. My legs are almost all solid muscle, yet there’s always a painful area in one leg or another. Coordination is off in the walking department, my appetite is lacking, and it’s a relief to sit down at any time. As you know, I’m a CNN news addict. Tonight at 9pm, they’re debuting one of their productions: “Life Itself,” about the late film critic Roger Ebert (1942-2013), who bravely battled and eventually succumbed to cancer. He was the first film critic to receive a Pulitzer Prize. I’ll be either inspired or saddened. In Comcast’s Cape Ann area, CNN is channel 23 or 760 HD. I never liked the movie reviews of Roger and co-critic Gene Sissel (1946-1999), but I have to watch this. I hope you get to see it also.

  1. Sadly, I only lasted for one hour of Life Itself, and will try to catch the 2nd half of it soon. It really liked it, both the journalistic and the cancer parts. A former Chicago Tribune colleague recalled Roger Ebert (my best recollection of his words): : “Good writers became good friends, because they were smart, intelligent, and could tell a great story in a saloon.” I felt the pain as a cancer-ridden Ebert struggled on the parallel bars to put one foot in front of the other. He was having none of it. He did, however, enjoy writing and communicating with his Mac laptop. He said writing, his creative passion, made him feel better, because it put him “in the zone.” Remember the pictures I took from my bed in Beverly Hospital, some with poetry? Amen.

  2. I heard an interesting quote recently. It went something like: winning the battle with cancer isn’t whether you live or die, it’s how you live your life with it. I would say you are winning.
Speaking of movies, I felt compelled to watch “My Dinner with Andre” again, for the new year- it’s timeless and inspiring.

    Happy New Year Fred!
